Car Noise in Drive and Reverse Mode

My petrol Rav4 gx brand new produces some sort of noise when on drive and reverse mode. This happens on 2 occassions. When brakes are slightly released not completely on D or R mode. Also happens when steering to extreme right or left and brakes are applied i.e the car is stationary during parking.

I have took the car to dealer but was told the sound is normal and nothing to worry about.

Its a brand new car purchased in July.

I have recorded the sound https://sndup.net/4tvb

Is this normal?

  • Can you describe the sound? When were the pads replaced last?

Could be the caliper piston and a little lubing can fix the sound.

  • I have took the car to dealer

Did you took it for test-drive before purchase?

    • It was brand new car.

If you're not happy with what the dealer says, get a second opinion. Take it to a non-dealer mechanic.

  • Can you record the sound?

If you are at the friction point on the brakes (where the car just starts to move slightly after lifting of the brakes slightly) it could be that the brake rotors/pads haven't bedded in yet.

Yes, it does sound like the brakes haven't bedded in yet. You might also find there isn't much problem with the noise if you let off the brake a bit more and creep forward at a faster speed.

        • Yes you're right there is no problem when i slightly more release brake.

I did quick google on bedding but cant really makeup whether its something normal for brand new car?

Also does car mechanic has to do something to fix it?

  • Brand new, but not really. How many kms on it? If driven weekly it should be all good by now. Perhaps you could get the dealer to let you test drive another of the same model to see if the noise is normal.

    • I got delivery on 31st July and its now 2k kms. I have driven within Adelaide only. Never took vehicle outside metro areas.

Maybe take it to your local mechanic and see if they can take a look it or take back to the dealership and tell them about the problem again
