Depending on what technology you will be using, you might be able to reuse something you already have. EWAN port on any of your hardware?
What's The Bang for Buck NBN Modem?
Who are you with? The best bang aka the cheapest is normally the free one tossed in with your plan ;)
If you need a VDSL modem and want something that is really good performance for not too high a price, I highly recommend the D-Link Python DSL-2888a.
After researching on whirlpool/the nbn published modem test etc, it came up as a good balance between price and performance. I'm using it on FTTN, about 200-300m from my node with AussieBB on a 50/20 plan getting generally about 47/19.
The modem can usually be had for about $159 everyday, maybe cheaper if you find it on sale: https://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=DSL-2888a&…
Note that I use it in as a modem only in bridge mode with a Netgear Orbi setup running my mesh wifi.
Do you need VOIP?
Don't ever look for one that supports Voip, source one desperately or your choices are very limited.
my TP Link Archer D7 seems to be compatible for NBN but since it has no phone jack socket, we can't use the landline device.
I like the Telstra Gateway max. Very stable connection. Bought new at gumtree $15.
the Gateway FaST 5355 Max ?
Mine is the TG799Vac
noob question: does this modem/router works like mobile phone, where if it's branded/locked to a provider, it needs to be unlocked first? I guess my simple question is can this be used with TPG, Internode, Exetel, Spintel etc?
@tempura: Yes and no depending on firmware. For Telstra firmware, no except VoIP.
Yes except VoIP and yes to all functions after you do this https://hack-technicolor.readthedocs.io/en/stable/ or this https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/hack_technicolor
Sign up to Kogan or Belong and get a free modem router, easy. Buy VoIP device separately.
