FTTN Modem to Work with NetGear R8000 Nighthawk X6

I'm about to switch from ADSL2 to FTTN NBN.
At the moment I have Netgear N600 modem router as a modem and a Netgear Nighthawk X6 R800 wifi router.
The router is fine and from my (basic) research it seems to be reasonably good compared to what's available.
I'm looking for recommendations for a modem that's going to give me good speed and also work with both FFTN and FFTP - as I may be moving next year.

Also if anyone thinks I'm better junking the lot and buying a new modem/router if it will give better performance than the Nighthawk X6.

Happy for any advice from those with more experience and knowledge.
(BTW we do basic streaming - sometimes 2 screens, radio and music streaming, email and web - no gaming or any big files etc.)
Thanks!

You don't need a modem for FTTP or FTTC or HFC - NBN will supply it.

For FTTN, you can supply your own modem, or get it from your internet provider. I don't have FTTN, so I can't recommend anything, sorry.

I just purchased Nighthawk AX8 but I have FTTP. Basically future proof yourself with the AX8. Highly recommend. And do shop around for price. I price matched the Nighthawk AX8 from JB HiFi for $440 (Mwave online) + Delivery. It was $599 in store.

You need a modem that supports Bridge Mode.

A great Ozbargain example is the Telstra Gateway Max, dirt cheap on Gumtree, nice compromise between speeds and stability and can be put into Bridge mode to make it a dumb modem in front of your Router.

If you move to any other NBN technology, you don't need a modem (It's supplied by default), just a router.

if and when you go FTTP, you just take out the n600 and continue with the nighthawk as per normal. Not sure about other ISP's but with ABB its plugged into the wan port of my router. no logins necessary.

  • Yeah, didn't think that through did I? I should have known I didn't need a modem if I move to FTTP!
