HP 14" i7-2.7GHz, 1GB GPU, 8GB, 750GB -$899 @ Centrecom or 4GB $859 OW Pricematch

600

<— Update —>>
MSY increased and brought it back up to $899 from $859.

You can Price match at Office works and this saves you 899.00-44.95+4.95(Handling fee)= $859. Either MSY or Centrecom.

While Centrecom Website still says 4GB, I went to Centrecom (Sunshine) and negotiated with them to give 4Gb Ram for free for the advertised price, guess what they have agreed. So Now its $899 with 8GB Ram :)

I have done my best to bring the price down for this system.

Now I think this is the piece of work for the OZbargainers. I would welcome any one who can help to bring it down further.

<—Update—>>

I was looking for a portable laptop with I7 processor for a very long time, Couldn't find one at a decent price.
considering its portability 14", i7 processor, upgradable Ram (Installed 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 (1 Dimm)) to 8gb as 2nd slot is free,

1GB Graphics and 750GB HDD.

I personally believe its a good price for the size and performance.

This could be a deal for some one who is looking for screen size 14" and i7 processor with 1gb Graphics. Comparatively less weight with 15.4 and 17"

    looks like a good deal.
    very good specs and price.
I've tried looking for 13.3 or 14in notebook with i5 or better with a class 3 GPU and it is quite hard.

    • +2

      i7, 14inch, its a good deal!

  • +1

This is a very good bargain

  • +3

Decent graphics card. Good processor. Ok screen res for the size. Easy upgrade to 8GB (but $69 is expensive for a single 4GB sodimm, so buy it elsewhere for cheaper).

    A pretty good deal.

    • Without sounding too noob-y, is a 2gb NVIDIA GT 540M better than this? Just because sometimes the size is bigger, doesn't mean it performs better.. so I thought I'd ask (goin' by that old Dell deal where you could upgrade to a 2gb video card, for a total price of about a hundred more than this one)

Note this is i7 is a dual core 2620M, unlike the quad core 2630QM, i wouldve bought one if it was a quad ;)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_i7_microproc…

Also does ATI have a Nvidia Optimus equivalent?

    • If at all we can get all our wishes.. :)

Very less options available for portable Laptops under 14", at this price.

    • all u need to do is pay MORE!

    • Since its an Online deal only, I assume you cannot ;

      as it says:
You can redeem the Lowest Price Guarantee (LPG) by visiting your local Officeworks store, by fax or phoning in. You can not redeem the LPG via our online store.

IF you can, try and let us know .

      • +1

That means you can't pricematch online, you have to fax, phone or go instore. They do let you pricematch online stores such as logitechshop.

        • +1

          I've called Officeworks, Highpoint.

Well the outcome, You can Price match.

          that saves you 899.00-44.95+4.95(Handling fee)= $859

How long would the battery last on this?

    • That was my first question too. I somehow don't trust that 52hr statement in the battery specs. Doubt it would come close to the 10hrs of a U31F though.

    • My DV6-2119tx's battery lasts for approx 1 hr. so my guess here is that you may get little more battery life due to smaller screen.

Not a fan of HP, but a big fan of 14" form factor and the specs at this price.

    • +2

Yeah I agree the last few HP's I've had to work on for family have both been back to HP for repairs (one the ethernet port wouldnt release a cable (they actually fixed it by jamming a screwdriver and bending the metal on the surround … dodgy). Also my work purchased a quantity of their top end business laptops (techies were lazy and like the support options) at around $3500 each (Nvidia Quadro). We had two hard drives die within the first two weeks and my machine continually blue screened. HP quality lately has been pathetic, and I wouldn't touch them (even put Acer above them, which is a big call). This is a good price if your willing to take the risk. At least HP after the 4th service drop off (and me going off my tree about their dodgy get it temporarily working then hand it back repairs) organised a refund at officeworks and I got my mother in law a different brand. Dell seem like a much more reliable machine (now using both at home and at work).

    • I too had appalling service from HP and their call centre and their "designated repairer in Brisbane in the end of 2009. If you are not forceful and have a lot of spare time you will get no where with any of them if you have a problem.

    • Sounds like my experience a few years ago - two and a half month ordeal involving soul-destroying calls to HP and the laptop having to go back to their outsourced service centre twice due to botched repair jobs. Second time it came back the chassis was warped and impossible to clip into place:

      http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/9233/botchedhp.jpg

The only positive aspect was the service centre sent one of their own suited employees to collect and return it each time.

      • yowser. yes I got mine hand delivered in the end. I was about to go overseas for a year the next day so the timing was good.

    • +1

      Same here.

While I didn't mind the support over the phone to their overseas help desk, there repair centres (which are outsourced to private repair businesses) are terrible.

For instance in 2010 I bought a i7 quad dv6-2119tx and after a few months or so I noticed it kept blue screening. As somewhat of a tech head, I ran some benchmarks along with hardware stress tests and noticed that the Motherboard is faulty. After my discovery I contacted HP and arranged a courier pickup of my laptop to the repair center. Once I got the notebook back, it didn't appear they did anything apart from an OS reinstall. I was shocked beyond words, so I contact them providing my analysis data and resent my notebook back to the repair centre. After a week or 2 they informed me that the repairman was involved in an accident and I might have to wait up to 2 weeks to get it back. After I received my notebook from the repair it still wasn't fixed so I had to resend it back to them once again (repeat this sentence another 4 times). After the 7th centre I vented my frustration over the phone to the company who was fixing my notebook. They informed me that they couldn't find anything wrong with it (they didn't even go over my analysis sheets I've sent them). However they finally agreed to replace the motherboard I was already fed up of wasting many valuable months and time with them I decided to contact the ACCC. After receiving my notebook (with the replaced motherboard) the notebook ran like a dream :) but it was too late, 6 months without my notebook was far too long and with the aid from the ACCC I managed to get a refund for the notebook.

Now I thought it was just my bad luck on receiving a lemon I decided to buy another HP notebook (but at half the price as i originally bought it with an i5). At the beginning, it ran so smooth, no overheating, blue screens etc at all i thought i had a winner! However, as months slowly passed I noticed the temps were accumulating each day when doing the same tasks to the point the machine kept turning off - due to overheating. As I don't want to experience the same treatment I did last year, disassembled the notebook reapplied thermal paste and cleaned the fans and it has since works perfectly. While it's still starting to get hot, it's no where to near as much as before that it needs another self disassemble.

I'm not saying that HP makes bad laptops, their design, features, looks! and price makes them so attractive to consumers but in spite of this you get higher fail rates (overheating which will gradually take effect - depending how you use it and if you service it yourself; clean the fans, cooling pipes, apply new thermal paste etc) not to mention HP's infamous poor after sales support.

Next year I'll probably replace this notebook (regardless of it just being a year old at that time) with some other brand (despite being at a slightly higher price premium) on either Toshiba, Asus, Apple or even Acer since I've had no troubles with any of them in the past and their tech support are top notch.

Edit: Looks like I forgot to comment on the deal itself ;). Actually this is a very 'very' good deal considering it's an in i7-2 in a rare 14" form factor, 750GB HDD with a mid-high end ati graphics card. The specs are perfect for this price point.

      • Hirokuru, I have dv6-2119tx and it overheats. I have tweaked the balanced profile and set the cpu max state to 75%. Doing this I get a balance of cpu performance and reduced temp. If I have to do CPU intensive stuff then I change the profile to max 100% cpu state.

      • What a terrible ordeal! I cannot believe you had to endure months of shoddy customer service because of a lemon laptop.
The sub-contracted tech repair guys sound totally incompetent and useless. Fortunately you had the skills to diagnose and fix the overheating issue. I won't touch a HP product until they radically improve their manufacturing designs and provide adequate after-sales service and support.

  • Everything is good for the price but the screen resolution could be better. I'm looking for one with 900+ resolution.

  • Hmmmm, in the market for a new laptop. This ticks all the boxes (minus reso) at a very good price, not sold on the HP bit… but i think i might just buy it from OW.

    • +1

don't do it! you'll pay for it in the long run!

      • +1

Agree. HP is not as good as you think it is.
My HP laptop has been out of order for three times within two years….

  • does it have a backlit keyboard?

  • +1

Very tempting, great specs, it's got the good graphcs, the i7, usb3, lightscribe (yeah i got a 20 spindle of lightscribe dvd's for cheap), hdmi.

Con's: hard drive is only 5400rpm, but i would jusy take it out and sell it, and put my 7200rpm 500gb in.
    Screen res average.
Is it worth waiting for bluray player in something similar to this deal, say maybe near the end of the year?

  • everything is good but screen res is crap comparing to others…if only 1366x768 we can have a cheaper CPU and GPU to have the similar effect

  • I have dv6-2119tx with i7 processor. It is a great laptop, the only downside with this HP old shape is that the model is not designed for efficient air flow (required for i7) and hence the cpu ideal temp is around 55degree and on contant load (video rendering) the temp goes and stays around 90 degree.

if you google you will find lot of people compaining about heat issue with older model HP's with intel i7.

I think the newer models may be better as they have front air vents.

    • I have the new model with the front air vents and tbh no air actually comes out of it :O. It's not blocked or anything like that.

  • Personally, at the weight of 2.22kg, might as well get the dv6-6024 no? It can be found for maybe $50-$100 more and is about 0.2kg more. Although I suppose if you were after the slightly smaller build of a 14" this would be the way to go.

Would have bought one by now if the brand wasn't HP. Still deliberating :/

    • i just got a DV6-6024TX from DSE @ $999 with 2 years extended warranty

my local DSE matched the nextdoor JB's 15% off last night.. so the lappy by itself was a great deal @ $850 (it's listed @ $1192 @ JB online lol)

  • Called Officeworks this morning. They only do the price match if the item is in stock at the competing outlet, so they couldn't do the pricematch today, as the product is now out of stock at Centrecom, at least that's what the saleswoman told me she was told by Centrecom, now the page is marked 'Call for stock'.

  • +2

MSY even more cheaper than CentreCom

  • I checked CentreCom website, its come with 4G not 8G

    • Yes its 4GB on the website, as I've gone to the store in Sunshine and bargained with them for extra 4GB for free.

  • this would be awesome if it had more screen resolution.

  • Appears the MSY price went back up.

Went to JB Hifi and got it with 8GB Ram for $923.
