eBay won't refund forced eBay plus charge despite cancelling

Hi

So I signed up for a free 30 eBay plus trial and cancelled 2 weeks before the trial ended. I got a confirmation on screen and thought nothing of it. I check my PayPal and I was charged $48.99 for a annual eBay plus subscription without my knowledge even though I remember cancelling.

Short story cut short; I just wasted almost TWO damn hours on eBay live chat for the chat agent to decline my refund. Best part is they admitted it was a "system glitch" multiple times (I took screenshots for my claim with PayPal, just opened it there) but then after I called them out for it-saying it's a technical issue and not my fault, etc-they backpedal HARD and shift the blame onto me, stating that they "assume there was no system glitch from eBay". I don't own nor have access to any kind of 'system' so how am I at fault if it was a system glitch? It doesn't make any sense.

I was in disbelief at first so I googled in search of what to do and found a TON of people who had had the same issue: got charged when they cancelled. I've used eBay for over 7.5 years, only have 1 account and have spent thousands and thousands there. This is ridiculous! It's the last time I'll spend any money there.

I have submitted an unauthorised charged dispute/claim via PayPal but have read a few people had their claims denied which is concerning. Last resort is a chargeback which I've never done before and don't really have any hope there either (because CBA). Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm lost on what to do.

lmao I guarantee you that you will shop at eBay again

Its just 50 bucks mate, just use the free shipping benefits. If you have spent thousands then this would be an issue

    • +11

Sure why don't you send 50 bucks to me. Why not, it's just 50 bucks right? DM me for bsb and acct.

    • +2

Can you spare $50 to me too since that's nothing to you apparently?

    • To be honest, I haven't bought much from eBay ever since I decided not to.

If you are always buying things on eBay, it may seem hard to stop but once I don't buy it for a while, I don't miss it.

Amazon has fantastic service. A lot of video games and tools I need are offered at way cheaper prices on Amazon (as well as Amazon US). I never buy from Amazon AU 3rd party sellers though, those guys are a effing joke.

    • 5 days later and no reply, obviously you now wished you've had retracted your statement….since 50 bucks DOES matter to you…either that or you're not philanthropic enough to hand them out…

  • Got mine back from PP dispute no worries

  • +1

    Keep complaining.
    Keep all your records.
This is precisely why I am hesitant in taking up these so called "free" offers.
I refused to join Netflix because of this precise crap.
Either enjoy the benefits of the subscription or complain complain complain

    • I'm keeping my records, hopefully they'll help.

  • Paypal has an appeal processs, also often answers on facebook

    • They have an appeals process? Is it different to the dispute process?

  • Perhaps rather than a refund you could ask if they could provide you with the $50 coupon code promo that is running at the moment? Highlight that you'll be requesting a charge back through your credit card provider if they can't resolve it. There will be a cost to them in responding to the charge back request.

Alternatively, just have to suck it up and try to use the ebay plus benefits as much as you can over the next year to try and earn your $49 back.

    • I prefer the refund but I'll ask them about that.

  • +2

Same happened to me. I didn’t bother to go to eBay as I know it would be no use. I went to my CC and filed an unauthorised transaction dispute, got money back in 3 weeks . Ebay cancelled the plus afterwards, which i cannot care less.

    • Yeah I'm going to do a chargeback tomorrow. If you don't mind me asking, what exactly did you say in your chargeback dispute to ensure you got a refund? Besides saying that I cancelled the trial, saw on screen confirmation that it had been cancelled and was still charged and contacted eBay and PayPal, I don't know what else to say. I've never done one before so I don't know what to do. I've searched online for some info and am still confused how it all works.

  • +2

Wow in terms of customer service eBay Plus certainlyu suck compared to Amazon Prime.

I had bought Amazon Prime UK to get a gift delivered to family, and completely forgot to cancel it (it was billing me monthly for 5 months).

Logged on, spent 5 minutes with Amazon Rep, refunded no questions asked! I guess it helped that I didn't buy/use anything from Amazon UK after that gift.

    • +3

I agree, Amazon CS is much more consistent and willing to assist you.

      • +2

Same. It's why I try to buy from Amazon over eBay these days.

  • -3

if all avenues fail. I have a last workaround…

I assume you now have the cancellation email, open it up and on Chrome 'inspect element'…change the dates written on there, resubmit to paypal saying u've found it in the spam folder.

    • +2

Does that really work? That sounds a lot like fraud…

      • Not sure it'll work. When I had a dispute, PayPal wouldn't even accept communication through eBay messenger let alone email. They argued it could be forged. Anyway I lost my dispute as the only communication i had with the seller was through eBay messages.

    • -1

      Huh, that's actually pretty smart……………

  • I was charged the same but this was after the free period. I said can you please cancel and refund? long story short I said I needed those funds to pay MORTGAGE. They eventually put in cancellation and refund. Hope that help

    • I also need those funds to pay mortgage and other bills but I don't want to mention it. I will try that, thanks. Which department did you speak to in chat?

      • Just the ebay online chat

        • That's great they were able to refund you. Damn, if seems like I keep getting all the unsympathetic eBay reps (except for 1 guy who was polite and a bit sympathetic.)

  • +1

Very similar situation happened to me 2 months ago. Ebay wouldn't budge, and neither did PayPal to begin with as they declined my claim. I reopened the claim with PayPal and questioned how there relations with Ebay could be creating a conflict of interest. Given this, as well as my initial complaints of how Ebay's system is bugged/fraudulent/deceiving, in the end I think they had enough of me and gave me what I wanted. :)

It's definitely important not to use any Ebay Plus features during this period a swell. Good luck!

    • How long did wait until you reopened the claim? I tried to but it says 'you've already opened a claim and it has been closed'. I want to try that but it seems it would pi$$ them off even more and they'd just stonewall and eventually ignore me. And most likely add a note to my account saying I was being 'passive aggressive' (not saying you were to PayPal. I actually like what you did).

      • +1

I spoke to PayPal on the chat system. I asked them I would like my case opened under another category. At first I think I also did unauthorised transaction, which I don’t think they even read my appeal. They changed my appeal category to “Cancelled pre-approved payment”. If you want to know anything else feel free to ask.

        • Thanks for the info, I need to try that.

  • @Ozboganyeah

Did you use any of the plus "perks" prior to asking for a refund?

I'd assume this would not work in your favour if you did :(

    • +1

Nope. I only made 1 purchase (in 1 large order) on the day I signed up using eBay plus perks. I had issues with my order so I cancelled my free trial and decided u should just stick to Amazon instead.

      • So, you completed the aforementioned purchase after becoming an eBay Plus member? I assume said purchase had an eBay Plus tag next to it with free shipping.

        • Yeah, signed up for a free trial bought multiple items in 1 transaction/order (seller was Coles). I had issues with my order (out of stock and missing items) so I cancelled my free trial after I was refunded for those 4 items.

  • Chargeback is easy if it was a creditcard. If it was directdebit from a bank account then it would be more difficult.

    • It was paid (automatic payment) via PayPal through a debit card. Hopefully it's a similar process, never done a chargeback before so I'm hoping it's a relatively easy process.

    • If it was directdebit from a bank account then it would be more difficult.

I take it that you've had experience trying to do a chargeback on a debit card?

    • Chargeback on PayPal is generally not a good idea. A chargeback can lead to a total PayPal account ban. PayPal dispute process is effectively their equalivant of the banks chargeback process

  • Always link online saving account which can't be direct debit to your PayPal account

    • Could you elaborate? I'm confused.

      • +2

What you want: A savings account that allows you to take payments but does not allow direct debits.
What you do: Setup PayPal account with said account, provide the two deposit amounts to PayPal to verify the account

What happens: When you sign up for things like eBay plus, the savings account is used to process the payment, however as said savings account (already verified in PayPal) is used for a free trial, when they attempt to debit it, puts your PayPal into arrears as the $49.99 can not be drawn from your savings account.

Granted, if you link any credit cards or use your real name, PayPal catch on pretty quickly.

        • Thank you for clarifying. I will definitely do that.

        • Sounds pointless, easier to just cancel the auto payment on PayPal rather than open a savings account where most attract a monthly fee

  • +1

da*n it. i got the same problem. it was the $1 deal right? i signed up 1 month ago but now got charged $48.99. ebay didn't budge on refund now i am disputing on paypal.

    • meanwhile i am worried ebay might forfeit my account which has 8000+ good feedback score if the dispute is successful.

    • I didn't sign up for the $1 deal, only for the free trial and then got slugged for an annual subscription. That's a lot of good feedback, I'd be worried too if I was in your shoes. Please let me know how it goes, whether you get refunded (and what you said to them, how, by who and where).

    • But the $1 deal was for a year subscription?

  • +1

Update 3: I will do a chargeback tomorrow. I've also sent an enquiry to Fair Trading in hopes they can assist me.

Also tried eBay chat again to no avail (got stonewalled even when I explained I needed the funds to pay bills and mortgage. Very unsympathetic)

  • +3

I had exactly the same thing happen to me. Was on the phone to this incompetent lady who was just saying I should receive an email when cancelled, I said how would I know an email would be sent? It’s my first time cancelling and the screen said it was cancelled, the manager said he couldn’t refund anything either
Either way, I Complained to PayPal, outlining the rubbish service and they refunded me.
Haven’t used eBay since, absolutely disgraceful service.

    • Do you mind saying which department of PayPal you spoke to on the phone? E.g general enquiries team, refunds team, claims team, upper management, etc? And what exactly did you say? I'm so sick of getting stonewalled and being told (essentially) bad luck and to suck it up. Also could please clarify on "rubbish service"? I agree and want to use that when I call them again.

      • Oh I only spoke to eBay on the phone, which was just pointless and a waste of time. On PayPal dispute my reason was ‘ Refund for cancelled subscription/recurring payment’.
In regards to the rubbish service I just outlined how bad it was and what exactly happened. I just realised now it was successful cause eBay didn’t respond to PayPal asking them for a response to my claim.

  • +3

I refuse to use ebay because they refuse to refund ebay plus.
I have deleted my paypal and going to delete ebay account once the 1 year ebay plus is over.

    • That really sucks. Did you contact your bank for a chargeback?

      • +1

no, i take the $50 as lesson learnt and never use ebay again.
never been happier, spending less money on random crap and amazon is 10 times better

  • Happened to me. No point discussing with eBay they won't listen. Just go to PayPal and mention there was unauthorised transaction even after cancelling you will get your money back.

    • I did exactly that an my claim was denied. I swear they never read the description for my claim. It's so frustrating.

  • +2

Sorry for your troubles. I’ll be cancelling my ebay plus when it runs its annual course as well. I’ve saved shipping cost on it, but it’s absolutely a joke.

I recently went through a RMA for ebay plus item and had to pay for shipping the item to seller as 30 days had gone by.

I’ve also read stories where if you return and get a refund within 30 days for ebay plus u’d be on a black list from seller. Whats the point of ebay plus terms then. Anyways, enough nagging, I think it’s of no use for normal customer

    • Yeah, I've read a lot of comments where people had the same exact problem but were able to get refunds. I agree there really aren't any benefits to eBay plus besides free postage and returns. Discounts are nice but I'm not interested in keeping my subscription at all.

  • I raised a dispute with Paypal and got refunded.

    • What did you say and which department did you speak to? I'm going around in circles trying sort this out with them.

  • happened to me also.. i could not get a refund, didnt think to do a refund request as it was with cc

    • Tell your cc provider this is an unauthorised transaction and do a chargeback.
This should be very straight forward.

  • +1

This happened to me too. Was initially refused a refund and had to point out that I was entitled to one because it was still within the 30-day trial period. Was finally informed that the cancellation invoice would take “a while” to generate. That was about two weeks and I’ve yet to see a refund in my Paypal account.

    • Have you followed it up with them? I hope you get your refund.

It's very disappointing that eBay is stealing people's money via the eBay Plus subscription.

I mentioned this to the customer support, but they have a few mistakes that I think are very customer hostile:
    - They did not email us a few days before the free trial ends to tell us that they're going to charge us.
    - They do not have cooling off period after the free trial and refused to cancel the membership even if it's just 1 day after the free trial ends.
    - They charge yearly instead of monthly so people who finished the 1 month free trial gets charge for the whole next year.

I think this is the beginning of the end of my relationship with eBay. I might still shop there some times, but I mostly prefer Amazon now. They clearly are very customer friendly and understand people's needs better than eBay. It's quite sad since I've been an eBay member since 2006, but company management has been very bad.

Thanks for stealing my $49 eBay, and enjoy it. If that's how much you value customer relationship, I think you are making a very bad mistake. You are stealing $49 from people who would never use the benefits of the subscription anyway.

If there's enough interest maybe we all can go to ACCC and report this kind of customer hostile behaviour.

    • +1

They don't care about that, they just want their managememt report to look good in order to get their bonuses - hey look our plus members have increased!

    • I feel exactly the same way.

  • -1

You don't have any evidence it was cancelled do you?
If you didn't cancel (but thought you did) then it's not their fault. You can't blame them, charge back, dispute, etc.
It's relying on their good will to refund.

    • -1

So websites can keep charging people for cancelled services… all they have to do is not send an email notification to their customers. Even though he clicked on deactivate and was then told his service was cancelled, there's still no paper trail so Ebay is totally within their right to keep charging people? Ridiculous.

The same thing happened to me as well and I thought I was going crazy, but it's obviously happened to many many people in this thread. I was fortunate enough to get a refund after chatting to Ebay, but only because I had never used the service.

      • -1

Didn't happen the way you describe, but feel free to keep fighting the evil corporations

        • What exactly didn't happen the way I described? When you cancel through the website it lets you know it succeeded and that your service has been cancelled, but it doesn't send you a confirmation email (or at least didn't when I cancelled back in August).

So should Ebay be allowed to continue charging customers due to there being no paper trail?

  • Sure you didn't take free trial in the past?
The signup screen still says free trial, but if you have trialed in the past you don't get it again and are charged.
Even if you didn't use your free trial, ie: cancelled \ elapsed.

    • No, it was the first time signing up for the free trial. I actually hadn't purchased anything from eBay since 2017 (and didn't sign in either) prior to this.

  • Open a case in resolution centre with PayPal it will be refunded

    • I did and it was declined.

  • +1

I forgot to cancel my membership and got charged the full $49 ah well, accepted it and moved on from it what’s then point stressing over it when ebay aren’t gonna help.

eBay Plus is good, time to pay back! support eBay!

  • This has been covered very extensively on this thread: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/465557

    • Yeah, I had read that prior to creating this topic.

  • +1

Update 4(?): it's really late but I wanted to update. I had a very busy day, I contacted all parties that could think of: eBay, PayPal, bank and fair trading. Neext will have to be ACCC.

eBay CS: same old deal, got stonewalled again. "Against policy to refund".

PayPal: call and spoke to a nice woman who was sympathetic. She opened another claim for me.

Commonwealth bank: lady I spoke to and I quote "we don't do chargebacks anymore only disputes. I can do a dispute for you…[when I stated chargeback info is on CBA website] Only the merchant can do chargebacks". That doesn't sound right? So she filled out the dispute form and refused to put 'unauthorised charge' as the reason. She wrote 1 sentence that said i was charged after cancelling. Nothing about how it was an unauthorised transaction charge. Despite how I spent 4 minutes explaining everything that happened, she goes"so you paid for 1 month and they charged you more…". No. I signed for a free trial and didn't pay anything when I signed up. She she cut me off "it can't be unauthorised because they have your details". Yes because I agree to Ts and Cs when signing up but I cancelled so the Ts and Cs shouldn't really apply anymore. So yeah, I have no faith the dispute-not-chargeback will work.

Fair trading: spoke to a nice and informative man. Essentially he told me to go to VCAT and because of the transcripts, my attempts to sort this out multiple times and the fact that eBay rep admitted it was a "system glitch", he told me it was "likely" I would 'win' the claim received a refund. But he stated it was a tough situation; I'm within my rights as a consumer and what eBay did WAS wrong, however because they're giant corporations located overseas, the Australian laws don't really apply to them. Don't have that reach.

VCAT sounds ok but there's two things to consider: time and (more) money. There's a $65 application fee to apply for it. And the waiting time for when your case gets heard is "2.5-3 months wait. Maybe longer because it's coming up to Christmas". Not sure what to do.

    • -1

Holy Jesus. Just start a gofundme page with a sob story. You'll get your money back

      • OMG! Judging by your posts, I think the time you have spent chasing up the various parties, when you add them all up you would have vastly exceeded the $50 you have lost to this eBay Plus scam.

Do you want to spend $65 to go to VCAT? You will need to file the application yourself, and then you have to figure out how to serve your application onto the Respondent (eBay Inc.) The filing fee alone exceeds the funds you are trying to recover. Besides you have said it yourself - you do not have a definite proof by means of an email that you had cancelled the service within the trial window.

        • +3

Yes I know but I actually need that &50 to pay for my mortgage-I'm going to fall behind since I'm short for the payment.

Also, I know it's just $50 (suck it up, bad luck and move on) but it would still mean ebY continues to deceive people. I'm still undecided whether I'll go apply for VCAT but for me, at least, it's also about principle.

          • +1

@OzBoganYeah: Good on you for pursuing.

You will get ridiculed because your decision or pre-decision isn't exactly what someone else will do.

You shouldn't have to justify your circumstance if you are acting on principle.

I think if you are chasing the $50, you're shite out of luck. It will cost you more than $50, or you could make that $50 elsewhere before you can squeeze any blood out of this stone.

            Prgamatically, you are already screwed.

Taking it to ACCC is fair if you are not trying to get a judgement for your case but for ACCC to scrutinize eBay's questionable practices that may infact infringe on already existing laws.

            • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for the support, I appreciate it. I don't know who and why somebody begged you but I gave you an upvote:)

I wasted so much time and effort trying to chase after this darn refund, that I think you're absolutely right - I'm shite outta luck with this ordeal and it's feeling like it's impossible to obtain a refund.

          • @OzBoganYeah: I understand you are angry, which I was when it happened to me.
However, think about what you are arguing above.

You need the $50 that eBay scammed off you to pay for your mortgage. To get this $50 back, are you seriously going to spend another $65 for a VCAT application?!? Madness!

      • Sob story? Err, no. I just explained what response I got from each place, so anyone who experienced the same issue as well with eBay plus could at least weigh up their options too. Geez.

        • Didn't say you gave us one but for the time and effort you spent on this I was pointing out a quicker path to recover your $$

Can start with ebay screwed me and now the grubby banks are coming after me. There's no shortage of bank and maybe even ebay haters to come to the party. Profit

  • put an official complaint to Department of Fair Trading in your state. They will contact ebay and try to work out a solution that suits you both.

    • Yeah I did that though they didn't contact eBay. They just said I should go to VCAT.

  • If someone is cancelling an eBay plus during a trial period, can they get screenshots?

It appears that it is still not confirmed if it is a glitch, or whether a 'confirm' button may not have been pressed on the last step.

Op, have you found any evidence from other people where they have a final confirmation page, but no email?

    • +1

Yea me.. did it twice to actually cancel

      • Same here. By chance I noticed the charge in my account and was able to receive a refund through Ebay support as I hadn't used the service.

      • Same here, I cancelled twice. Funnily enough I got an email cancellation for the second time I cancelled (free being charged).

I've been searching online and have read a ton of people has the same issue-but they didn't take any screenshots either.

  • +2

The cancellation process is long winded and a bit sneaky. Are you certain you cancelled? It's like 5 clicks as they ask for "another chance" then offer an "incentive" to stay. It also immediately shows on the ebay plus page that you've cancelled and the end date of your trial.

Don't bother with VCAT. They are overseas, won't show up, member can't compel them to appear.

Be cautious with doing a dispute/chargeback. Paypal will nuke your account from orbit. Expect an email within weeks saying they are closing your account because of reasons.

    • +1

I went through all those steps and was still charged the fee, so if you've done this recently and haven't received an email confirming your cancellation, I'd be following it up now before you're charged. I was lucky to receive a refund as I hadn't used the service.

      • Hate to admit but I've signed up numerous burner accounts to take advantage of ebay plus trials and I've always been able to cancel no probs (just a lot of clicks). Has always said right on the page the end trial date. I've never bothered to check for a cancellation email. Never been charged.

I'm genuinely puzzled how this issue is occurring for apparently so many.
