580

Was hunting for a laptop replacement after our rubbish HP one failed,
picked one up this morning @ OrangeIT.

Not the latest and greatest, but I think its plenty of bangs for the price,
more than meet the normal internet access needs.

Price for cash & pickup.
Found OrangeIT also offered the same model on ebay for $459, $60 more inclusive delivery,
if you are not in Sydney Metro. (not as good but still not bad).

This is really good value. I have a T series Lenovo which I'm happy with so far, I wonder what the quality of the G series is like. There's been a few deals on these from OrangeIT over the last few months, and their price gets a little cheaper every time. Maybe I will wait for it to get below $300.

    • I think, its not good to compare these with T series. T series is one of the best business Laptops and cost much more.

But for this cost, its worth a buy

  • Great value, bought the Lenovo Edge with very similar spec for over $550. At the time, everyone thought it was a bargain.

The only reason why I would never go Lenovo is because the function ("Fn") key is inconviently placed on the bottom left corner of the keyboard instead of the control key. I've trained my pinky to know where to press CTRL.

    Otherwise, good value.

I also hate that with a passion :)

    • In the bios of Panasonic laptop you can change it. Lenovo would have learned it.

    • u can change in official bios in some, unofficial if you are game in others.

  • would this be good enough to do some video editing on the go? or is it marginally better than a core 2 duo? I still have a laptop with c2d from a few years back and its definitely showing its age. barely can get any editing done now.

    • +1

definitely better than a core 2 duo, basic video editing tasks will be a breeze, however for the major tasks an upgrade to an i5 would be much more appreciated…IMO hehe :)

    • +1

this has integrated GPU, should be OK, but i read video editing dedicated GPU would be better.

      perhaps try a clean install.

Have a look at this in terms of gaming: http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/943540-i3-vs-i7-gaming-p…

Obviously it's overclocked to the limit but even at stock the i3 can hold up pretty well against the i5/i7, personally I would take an i5 over either though for price/performance.

    • Thanks guys for your input! Helped a lot.

In regards to a clean install you're probably right but I think this computer will bit more ram and the battery is pretty much dead. in total, I'd probably end up spending about 150-200 dollars for a new battery and some ram - also my vista is 32 bit so I won't be able to take advantage of 4gb that I was thinking of upgrading too.

    • yeah i wish i lived in sydneyyy LULZZZ :)

    • It is ridiculous and selfish to neg a deal just because it isn't available where you live.

    • so why is that a neg?

    • Come one, whats with the neg?
Their online delivery price is $60 more - via their ebay listing.
I think is to cover ebay/paypal/delivery costs,
bit pricey for Mel metro, but reasonable for outside metro WA say.
Maybe their ebay listing will come down this week too.

Hey, not my fault they dont have branches outside sydney metro…..

It's called the "OzBargain sheep-effect phenomenon"

After someone receives -2 votes there is an compulsive urge in the masses to neg them to hell, often without any reasoning and helped by the fact it's anonymous. I looked it up on wiki because I too was confused about this. Sorry don't have the link handy.

        • "It's called the "OzBargain sheep-effect phenomenon"

Is that the same as when many people vote + for a one off find? :-(

  • there is also this one

    • thats a pretty good bargain as well, shame about the Intel gfx though

    • Also the P6200 model is $349 + $50 cashback.

      score at www.cpubenchmark.net :
      Intel Pentium P6200 @ 2.13GHz 1623 ($60 cheaper)
      Intel Core i3 350M @ 2.27GHz 2046
      Intel Core i5 460M @ 2.53GHz 2606 ($100 more)

by comparison, of the three i thought the i3 model was best value.

      • Are these Gen 1 or Gen 2 i-series?

        • Gen 1.

MSY COMPUTERS - can match the price - so here you go!

    • Are you sure they stock it? I can't find this model on the website.

"Not the latest and greatest, but I think its plenty of bangs for the price"

what are we talking about here? giggles

  • I bought the exact same one 6 months ago for $599. Great machine for everyday use, I found the battery life is pretty good too! Only drawbacks are no dedicated graphics and no Gigabit LAN… No use getting upset over that for the price, great bang for your buck :)

  • I think MLN deal is better, I've received their newsletter with $399 after cashback Lenovo core i5 with 1GB Dedicated Graphic

    • sold out yesterday

      • +3

yeah, just realised that :) you are faster than I can edit my post :)

    • I was also impressed on Sunday, would have got that but NO STOCK. booo.
Note, integrated GPU might not be a bad thing for laptops,
having dedicated GPU is another component to go faulty,
lots of surface mount GPU solder break with overheat - what broke on my HP rubbish.
      (never buy HP again).

      • +1

FWIW - The bulk of failed laptops i have seen over the years are failed GPU's

        • Agreed. I have 2 laptops both failed GPU after around 2 years of usage.

        • +1

Yup its pretty common for them to fail, especially the Nvidia ones up until about 2009/2010 due to the 'Bumpgate' scandal where they were failing pretty often due to manufacturing errors where by the solder holding on the GPU would become brittle and break IIRC

Back then Nvidia GPU's in Laptops were the most common probably like 90% of dedicated GPU's were Nvidia, these days you get just as many ATI ones as Nvidia and the lessons have been learned but you never know….

Also dedicated GPU's generally run the battery down faster, its why laptops that have switchable graphics are better on battery use, use the integrated graphics for normal tasks like browsing, using office etc and only using the dedicated GPU for more demanding tasks

    • Now they have an Acer on sale. My 5 year old Acer has been so bad I really would struggle to buy another Acer product - screen has a pale patch, DVD drive won't burn CD's, inbuilt webcam won't work properly causing a random usb disconnect/reconnect noise, the list goes on …

  • Thanks for this. Was planning to buy this via their ebay link next week. This saved me $50!

  • what about this one:

    http://www.orangeit.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products…

ok the cpu sucks and the 2gb isn't good but you can get $15 2gb sodimms anywhere

    • +1

      the i3 comes with 1x 4Gb and 1 free slot, compare to 2x 2gb.
that kinda makes it worth more than $15 more….

  • +4

Excellent price. Laptops are seemingly getting cheaper by the day.

  • So this is only in Sydney? Will anyone in Melbourne match it?

  • I have one. Its a good deal, but be aware of:
    - bad screen quality
    - touchpad doesn't work well

    • So the screen just doesn't look as clear as it should or will it break?
Touchpad can be fixed by a mouse if need be I guess

  • safe to assume this doesn't have BT?

  • Does the OrangeIT one have HDMI?

    • Yes, says it in description here and on website

  • Good find! And this one has HDMI

  • they just restocked today and picked one up, quite please with it so far. price is actually $349 instead of $345(after $50 cash back in Visa Cash Card - within 12 weeks)

  • Referred to my cousin and he picked one up yesterday from the Auburn store.

  • Hi,

Has anyone had their orders confirmed from ORANGEIT?

I have left a few emails/phonecalls (always to be told someone is going to call back and confirm).

    I ordered mine last week.

    Anyone???

  • I went to the Hurstville branch just now, they sold out this model, then they introduced me Lenovo G560 (0679ADM), no HDMI, but got bluetooth and NVIDIA Geforce video card. $409 and $50 cash back, on site pick up warranty. The staff said this model is better…I got that as my old laptop was down. But…the staff's customer service needs to be improved, not very patient when answering my questions!

  • how does one claim cashback? is it hard?

I didn't buy one but my dad interstate did and he doesn't know english;.
