AMD seems to be pushing very hard to promote their CPU recently. Are they winning the battle against Intel?

    • -2

      Yes and no

        Thanks and no thanks then

      • They should offer 16gb ram and 512 ssd to be more competitive

        • -1

Sounds like you know Lenovo's market better than they do. I'm not saying you don't I just want to know how.

I think AMD is going pretty well. There is a reason why their share price hit a 12 year high recently due to a positive earnings reaction. Desktop CPU is outperforming Intel in all benchmarks except specific gaming at 1080p. Mobile CPU is holding its own against 8th Gen Intel and only slightly behind in IPC vs 10th gen. AMD's Integrated Mobile GPU is still miles better than what Intel has to offer. Microsoft offering the latest Surface with a Ryzen is an indicator of how their market share is going against Intel.

Budget model looks very good for the price. Would love to see those specs in a 14".

Customise the lower specs and you get $700 for the same of the higher specs. Win

  • Can the RAM be upgraded?
    Pity it's a TN panel.
    I think I'd rather the E595 for a bit more $

    • Why is the E595 better?

      • Thinkpad

      • E595 advertises IPS screen, but really the term "IPS" doesn't mean much anymore, plenty of cheap TN screens can claim to be IPS. Not sure if the one in E595 is real IPS or just falsely advertised.

  • Good option for a kid starting high school as a basic school laptop? anything better? Maybe better to get a basic gaming laptop?

Added the better CPU and upgraded HDD to the base model and comes to <$700

2.2KG is a bit heavy for a school laptop, the specifications are fine but this type of laptop wasn't made to be portable, more of a desktop replacement kinda deal.

For comparison, a 14 inch E490 or E495 is 1.75KG, much easier to carry around. A good price to look out for is $700~800 for a Ryzen 5 based E495

  • Too big for school.
Screen needs to be 13 and it's too heavy. I would guess battery is not up to all day use as well (schools don't let them charge in class, laptop has to last all day)

The schools supplier is doing Lenovo Thinkpad 11e Yoga 5th gen for $1089 with a celeron processor or $1379 with a core M3, seems like a terrible spec for the price.

      • They are really solid little units. Not so light and thin ( for a 11.6" @ 1.54Kg. ), but makes up for it in toughness and will still easily fit in a schoolbag/backpack.

Was lucky enough to get one from GraysOnline eBay before they closed up ebay earlier this year ( only 2 were listed ) with an i5-7Y54/256GB M2 NVMe /8GB for $319 after 20% off. Looks new ( refurbished ), but think battery is no longer 100%.

Good thing about it is can charge via USB C PD with 12V-20V and even @18W like a power bank etc.

Go to Lenovo direct and can get cheaper/better spec there, or check refurbished from GrayOnline.

  • Hanging out for a good X1 Gen 2 deal. Fingers crossed for next friday, I got $2k waiting to go, just need a good deal Lenovo!
