  • Is it any good?

    • +2

Not strong enough flavor in my opinion, I prefer Cobram, but only buy when half price.

      • Does Cobram ever go half price? Never saw it that discounted.

        • +2

Yes they do. Do a search and you will see expired 1/2 price deals from before.
          There was one in September.

          • @dji1111111: Damn! Can't believe I missed that. I use it for cooking and for everything. It's usually pricey.

      • Yes we were disappointed by this one. Cobram is our favourite.

        • I use it for cooking, like soffritto, pancetta or frying eggs. It’s just 2 dollars more than plain olive oil and you have a tastier result at the end

          • @Laziofogna: I don't really shallow fry with olive oil. I use it either cold or add it to dishes with other oils.

            • @Hahuh: Yes you can shallow fry with ligher tasting oils, but for pasta sauces for example doing it with olive oil adds and extra layer if flavour. Bet use for quality extra virgin is raw you're perfectly right on that.

    • According to Choice this is the second best Olive oil, after Cobram.

    • Better than the fake italian/spanish oils but not as good as Cobram

    • It is quite good, especially at this price. I prefer it over Cobram, but that's personal preference.

  • Which oil do you guys recommend for frying. I currently use Grape seed oil and wondering if any other one better for health.

    • +2

You can fry in olive oil, but not too hot. Grapeseed oil has a higher smoke-point. There are no clear differences in health value, but lots of speculation and claims.

    • We generally use sunflower oil. You don't want to deep fry with olive oil

    • I use canola or sunflower and happy with that

      • Yeah the cheap ones fry just fine, even Blended vegetable oil.

Red Island and Cobram are both Boundary Bend Ltd: https://www.boundarybend.com/

    Fake competition.

    • Wow. Never knew this. Thanks for the information. Then I think I'll just buy Red Island from now on.

      • Same company, different flavour. Cobram tastes better

        • Yeah could be 'homebrand vs premium' type thing.
Or must be some sort of quality grading system?

          • @capslock janitor: My comparison is with Cobram purple label, they also offer dark green label and light green label that I have never tried. It might be that Red Island is the same as one of the two green labels.

  • I must have no taste. cos I buy whatever is half price, and use it for everything. Never thought it tasted good/bad. Same for the Mrs.

    • Put it side by side in blind taste test dip some bread in and see if any difference? lol
