2011 Hyundai i30 Drivers Side Window Won't Go up

Morning all,

Just got a frantic call from the number 1 daughter asking for advice, so I thought I'd go straight to the experts.
Went to raise the driver's side window after going into her secured parking spot and got nothing other than a grinding sound.
All other windows raise and lower without issue.

I have attached the video she sent.

I assume it will be a fiddly and expensive fix.

Thanks in advance. Any advice welcomed.

Power window regulator failure, will need to be replaced.

  • Push it in manually for now.

    • Thanks. Sorry, what should she push in manually? The window is already down and she is trying to raise it.

      • If yyou can get a grip on the window you can sometimes push it into place, but not in this case

Duct tape and a plastic bag will be your friends.

Motor sounds like it is working. I think a stripped or broken plastic gear and not electrical.

I had a car window failed once. It was because the car window I had had plastic gears. Bought a 3D printed replacement from ebay, swapped it out and it worked fine. Assuming she has not lowered the window all the way, you can "assist" the window to go up by pushing the window upwards while pressing on the window up button, for the mean time.

Broken window regulator…..a common problem on the i30.
DO NOT manually force the window, as it will cause further damage.

    • Thank you.

I had this issue on my vehicle a few years ago. I can't remember the specific name of the broken part (although I see others seem to have identified it as a power window regulator). Booked it in with an NRMA service centre, left it for the day and it was good to go in the afternoon. Seem to recall the cost was ~$300. YMMV.

  • Thank you kind souls. Your advice has been very helpful.

So will you be busting out the tools or heading to a repair shop?

As I have absolutely no knowledge of vehicles. I'll leave that to the trained professionals.
The car has been towed by the RACQ for free to one of their garages, where the main mechanic is already on the job!
Here is hoping it in an easy fix.

I had a similar thing happen to my passenger window on a 2011 i30cw. Turns out it was some of the slide mechanism in the power window. Rather than replace the whole internal unit (big dollars), I round these guys in QLD. Got the part shipped to WA, and fixed it myself on a weekend.
