If after checking the full eligibility criteria listed on https://www.solar.vic.gov.au/solar-battery-rebate and you believe you are eligible, www.ekoenergy.co are offering a Tier 1, Clean Energy Council (CEC) Approved 4.8kWh battery comprising:

• 5kW Redback Smart Hybrid inverter with 10 Year Warranty - https://redbacktech.com/homeowner-small-business/
• 4.8kWh PylonTech Battery that stores excess solar power not used during the day to use at night & provides backup power in case of grid blackouts. Comes with a 7^ Year Warranty - http://www.pylontech.com.cn/about.aspx
• Starting Price From $2,679*

Battery Storage is expandable to take up to 11.8kWh.

You can also take advantage of EnergyAustralia's PowerResponse - Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Program, where you get a $1000 credit on your bill once your Redback system is fitted and sign up with EnergyAustralia for your electricity. Plus EnergyAustralia will credit you a further $20 per PowerResponse event (minimum of 6 events to a max. of 20 events per year) - More info - https://cdn2.hubspot.net/hubfs/3425759/PowerResponse%20V2.pd…

New Battery regulations are likely to be introduced in early 2020, which based on industry sources are predicting up to an additional $1500 cost added to battery installs. We are finding those that are aware of this are deciding to install a battery before these new regulations come into force as it's not a retrospective legislation on already installed battery systems. More info here - https://onestepoffthegrid.com.au/battery-industry-braces-for…

*This offer is inclusive of the means-tested Victorian Governments battery rebate of up to $4,838. You can bring this price down further to effectively $2,679 if you take up EnergyAustralia's PowerResponse program detailed above.

^Standard PylonTech Battery Warranty is 5 Years, when registered you get an additional 2 Years, totalling 7 Years.

…what if my postcode is - now stay with me here - an anagram of the postcodes listed?

Could I get an anagram of the rebate? Perhaps $8843? I'd happily settle for $3488 though.

  • in WA all the pollies including the Wa greens like coal - except when its used to heat homes…that's not healthy…

  • +1

If we already claimed rebate for solar installation can we again claim for battery ?

    • unfortunately not, you can only claim ONE rebate through www.solar.vic.gov.au

    • Hmmm, so just about everyone is excluded (except maybe those who bought a house with solar already on it), meanwhile the person who moved away to a house without solar can just go back to burning coal in the corner. Well done government.. Well done!

P.S. wasting your one crack at a rebate on this tiny battery… Pass.

What if you already have a battery compatible inverter? Can get just batteries and rebate or have to take whole package.

    • What is the make, model and capacity of your inverter? I can check if its compatible with an alternative battery we can supply & install.

      • +1

Ah nvm, I cannot claim as per above

  • +1

I have 4.94 kw panels and 5kw inverter am i eligible?

    • Good question, I will ask my contact at Solar Victoria for you and get back to you. Alternatively you can reach out to Solar Victoria directly here https://www.solar.vic.gov.au/connect-with-us

    • +1

Why don't you add a few more panels as part of the install to get above the 5kw criteria?

      • That’s possible, depending on the inverter and setup.

    • +1

Solar Victoria have recently confirmed you’d be eligible. I’ve just sent you a PM. Feel free to contact me as per above if you’d like more details.

    5 unit battery
In an absolutely perfect world, you charge it up fully every day and deplete it fully every evening.
    That saves you $1/day
    2679 / 365 = 7.3 years payback

    • +1

At least it is realistic to fully charge and discharge virtually every day with that size battery, and you can potentially get some extra money from the VPP angle, The reality is that unlike solar, nobody should expect a huge payback from installing any residential battery even with large rebates. At least you should make some money back eventually with this one.

What would help are non-monetary benefits like being usable in a blackout. Is that possible with this battery? If so does it cost more to install it in a way that allows this?

      • You can't use the battery in a blackout. Grid-tied solar systems always require the grid itself to provide the AC sync. To use a battery in a blackout, my understanding is that you would need to be off-the-grid altogether.

        • +2

That’s not true. A Tesla powerwall will operate in a blackout with any inverter. For other battery brands, will need the appropriate inverter installed. Just be clear with the installer what you need/want. You do not need to be totally of the grid, at all times.

        • +1

From the brochure it says it provides Uninterruptible power "*When DC-coupled, backup circuit is connected and solar or battery energy is available. Appliances selected at the time of install."

        • Perhaps the "blackout" inverter has a small battery inside, or a separate add on to provide the 50hz signal. Would also need to disconnect itself from the grid if the blackout is due to an accident/ wires down. You normally pay extra for this feature.

          • @tunzafun001: I’m far from an expert, just a consumer… but you are right, the correct inverter/battery set up will disconnect the system from the main grid temporarily. Since pay back time is so long for the cost of the battery, a definite bonus to look into.

          • @tunzafun001: Blackout capability is a standard feature built in to Redback systems.

        • The Redback battery has an islanding feature as standard built-in so allows power to flow to the house in the event of a blackout from the battery only. As soon as the battery depletes then you lose power. When we wire in a battery we determine with you what "essential services" you need running in the event of a blackout. For most people, these include fridge/freezer, Wifi, Some light & power circuit, garage door, etc.

Full charge / discharge cycles are bad for lithium batteries. Its unlikely to last 7 years.

As for making a warranty claim, good luck. The installing company will no longer exist and the manufacturer will blame them for installing it wrong.

Better off buying a bigger battery and use the middle. It will last longer (make sure you mount it in a cool spot).

      • @mps41 Yes the Redback Battery is usable in a blackout and there is no additional cost for this blackout protection. Its a standard feature built into the Redback.

(sorry I dont know how to tag a user in Ozbargain, can anyone advise me?)

  • I don’t understand why they limited the battery grant to the boonies.

  • Hi Kez, If I already have a 5KW Fronius single phase inverter (Primo), would the Redback replace the inverter altogether or work in line with it? If it's in line, would it show the battery level within the Solarweb app? I'm guessing not… I would have to use the MyRedback app for this right?

    • +1

Hi rmh, your Fronius inverter would remain as is and the Redback would work in line with it. The Fronius SolarWeb will show you what your solar system is producing. Battery level would be on the MyRedback app. For more info on the MyRedback app feel free to contact Redback directly - https://redbacktech.com/contact/
