I have had one for over 10 years, making coffee 2-4 times a day and being belted hard, it's great. Very thick rubber over the knock bar. It's also big - 15cm diameter. Very solid and easy to clean. As it is wood not plastic it is very solid.
Same had mine for about 10 years too and still holding strong. Quality could be different now though
Which one is wooden? I looked up Grindenstein and the products look as non-wooden as this Sunbeam.
I you are an e-Bay plus member you can get the small Grindenstein for $21.40

They're not comparable products. This is much larger and way more solid.
Had one of these. I didn’t empty the bin every day (sometimes I left it for a week or more) anyway the paint came off the bottom where the grinds were in contact. Still works. But these days I just keep a teaspoon and scrape the puck out into the bin and rinse (I never get a solid puck anyways - breville with de pressurised pressure basket)

I have a Breville as well - is the liquidy grind okay? Most large machines leave a dry-ish grind at the end.
A wet puck - with liquid on top? That means bad coffee. Either your grinder or machine is badly calibrated or your beans are stale. Change the fineness of the grind.
Yeah, liquid on top, always. I have a grinder and I choose a grind-setting that gives me around 30s for a shot, so I thought that should be okay? What else is the problem? :(
@ocoolio: Liquid on top always here too.
Breville smart grinder, 30 sec shot too.
Aldi “blue bag” coffee.
Maybe there is too much space between coffee and top of basket?
Actually I don’t get how the puck can be solid given once you turn off the water, nothing would be forcing the remaining liquid through the puck to dry it.
@john_conner: Aldi beans (stale) likely your problem.
Wet puck means bad coffee?
Where you pull that direct correlation from?
Coffeesnob forum doesn't even seem to go that far
For the single wall basket you should get a slightly moist, solid puck that comes out easily with a tap. The shot pressure is a good indication if the grind size and quantity of coffee is OK. It should sit on about 9 bar for most of the pour. If not play around with the grinder settings. I usually start at a setting of 13, and about 16s grind time.
Having said that, if you get around 30ml in 30s with good crema and it tastes good, don't worry about how the puck looks.
I line it with cheapy freeze bags. Tip into compost when full
I had one at work and hated it. Reasons: 1)when you bang the filter falls in the bucket 2)unless you find a way to nail it on the counter it moves when you bang it. Also messy, I always haf coffe scattered around
Perhaps you didn't bang it enough before giving up? Some decent practice and you learn how to bang without making any mess… :)
It's the opposite, mate. You quickly learn that banging and leaving a mess is much cheaper than some alternatives.
I double-tap when I'm finished..
@highground: its rule #2
How tightly the basket fits in the group handle is completely separate from this product.
Any user experience compared to the Grindenstein?
