Yep, that's what the title says…

    • +22

Well most deals rely on you having money, which may be an issue for some?

    • 🤡 🤡

  • +1

    Good deal for Entomologists.

    • Is that all there is on that island? dang

      • Is that all there is on that island?

        Pretty much…

I think you can also go for a walk.

        • +1

Perhaps the next location for Bachelor in Paradise. Fit in well with the rest of the wild life there

      • +4

There's also mostly VERY VERY VERY expensive accommodation.

      • +2

I went there 20+ years back.

Neds beach was the highlight but it was full of reef sharks, barracuda and kingfish back then as they fed them fish/meat scraps from somewhere (the lodge kitchens?)

We did a crazy amount of walking and hiking.

        Also went swimming and fishing

It's a fairly laid back holiday.

        Can't remember the cost

        • I went about the same time. Hired a bike and found some nice downhill biking through the rainforest.

Serious questions: Why is JV being negged? I think we should appreciate having someone among us with such breadth of encyclopaedic knowledge. I had no idea about the stick insect to begin with, now I know.

      • +2

I had no idea about the stick insect to begin with

Did you read the history of it? It's fascinating. It was thought to be extinct for about 80 years until it was discovered on a cliff on the island.

        • I have and it was nice to find out that it's not all doom and gloom and sky is falling, there are some examples of species recovering.
Now if only the stories about Tassie tiger sightings were true, I'd be ecstatic!

        • It was found on Ball's Pyramid, not Lord Howe Island - a few km away.

  • This is exactly why I have saved my points but I don’t know if I could get leave that soon

    • It makes me wonder how many other 'hidden' points sales there are…

      • +4

This isn’t a sale, 16,000 points has always been the Lord Howe redemption. I have been saving points and looking for dates for a year over a weekend but usually have to go in via sydney and out to via Brisbane.

        • How is this the norm? I've been searching for Brisbane to LHI and they all come up as being >100k points return.

Do you need to be logged in to get proper estimates?

      • +6

Qantas points redemptions are based on distance, not the price of a regular fare. So basically if you can find a place which is quite close distance-wise, but quite expensive then a redemption will be good value.

        • +2

To add to this, you can combine flight distance of two flights.

For example, MEL > Whyalla, Kangaroo Island, Port Lincoln (all via ADL) are the same points (8,000) as MEL > ADL.

Note stopovers are typically limited to 24 hours, but sometimes it seems to work despite this (especially if international itinerary)

  • +4

Where does the return flight start from?

    • -1

      SYD

    • This is the standard redemption rate for QF flights, so it's available on flights exBNE as well pending schedule and availability.

  • +20

It is not a deal, it is a standard rate for QF redemption on this route

  • Not interested until they get NBN connected.

  • Not much accommodation available…? minimum of 275 a night?

  • +8

Yeah, then you look at the price of accommodation… There are two shops in town and just a 5 packet of instant noodles will cost you $10.

So it's ideal to have accommodation that includes food. Otherwise, you will be paying $100/day easily on meals per person.

Beautiful island though, but it's a playground for the rich.

    • +6

Keeps it quiet and no bogans

  • +6

    Jesus $900 each way!

I would rather fly to Europe for that!

Pack tins of tuna and instant noodles…

But nowhere cheap to stay (hostel, backpackers, camping) and all twin rates if solo.

  • +2

If using points, this is the normal cost. There's actually no special deal here (normal pricing is 8k points and about $85~ in taxes/fees each way.)

  • i couldn't find any dates/routes based on what OP said,.. am i blind?

  • I think I saw news about this island. it allows only limited number of people (may be 400) on island at a time.

  • +1

Why are the flights $1300 return, i can literally fly return to Europe for that. Qantas must be making bank on this route.

    • Actually a lot of taxes and fees which include a lot of money for council.
QF can only fly one type of aircraft there too.

    • +2

low demand + corruption + monopoly

  • Nominated as one of the top 10 regions to visit in the Best of Travel 2020 guide by Lonely Planet

    • there can be only 400 people on that island at a time. not sure how they keep track of that.
it sounds like some exclusive destination.

      • +1

it's to limit damage to the environment

  • I’m always on the look out for this redemption, sadly I can’t make these dates work.

  • Lord, how?

    • +2

      Cousin of Doctor, who?

  • At first i thought it was that pyramid looking island off the coast of NSW with the weird looking stick insect but then realized that island is called Ball's Pyramid and that the stick insect is called the 'Lord Howe Island stick insect'………

  • I went there using points a couple of years ago. Really nice place, surprisingly good food, feels like a holiday down the coast in the 80s, but with better food and drink. Very family-friendly, relaxing, but accommodation is expensive - we paid $300pn for five nights for a clean but fairly standard motel-type room. Five days was a nice amount of time. Go in summer, too - birdlife everywhere.
