Europe Flight options - June 2020

Hey guys,

Looking to travel to Europe next year for 3 or so weeks. Ideally Brisbane -> Amsterdam in early June, then Croatia -> Brisbane in early July.

Finding cheap flights seems to be difficult, with plenty of options costing ~1k per person one way.

Are there better airports and airlines to choose from? I've been using webjet etc to track down deals.

Was planning on travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Poland, and ending in Croatia (and possibly a few small stays elsewhere) via train.

Any help would be appreciated.

Use Google Flights or skyscanner to price flights. For the trains, look at the information avaliable on seat61.

If you fly into/out of bigger airports for your long haul flights, you will have more competition and so usually better prices. Amsterdam will be very good for this, but your chosen airport in Croatia may not.

Book an open-jaw ticket rather than two one-way tickets.

I wouldn't use Webjet; Skyscanner is my choice, and I view by the month to look for cheaper days / weeks.

To fully understand which airlines fly into Amsterdam, have a look at the airport's daily arrival info. That shows all the flights for a particular day, so lets you understand which airlines, and from where those flights have originated. You may find a flight through, say, Taiwan that will be cheapest.

Do the same for your return flights; have a look at Zagreb but also some other nearby major airports. It might be worth a train trip to pick up a better flight.

Sometimes it is worth using a travel agent, but it is worth the effort to fully understand your options.

Try booking it as an open-jaw (multi-city) ticket with the same carrier. That way you'll get better return pricing rather than separate one-ways.

  • Wait until they release Europe airfares specials for the peak season.

  • Noticed recently some good deals from Hong Kong. Might be worth flying to Hong Kong or Asia first.

  • Cheapest you'll get to Europe return is $1,225 with Singapore BNE-ZRH, CPH-BNE

    • Or $1,525 from your preferred destinations.

I booked my return flights MEL to AMS with China Southern for around $1,000 for May/June 2020.

If you want to combine flights like flying into Amsterdam but out of another city, try to find a travel agent to help you as they can find good deals for it. I think I've only booked flying in and out of another city myself only once via an airlines website after a lot of fiddling around.

My normal plan of attack is using a flight comparison website like skyscanner then jumping onto the airline's direct website to book.

Signing up for newsletters/deals via websites like i want that flight etc are also good to be aware of current sales.

June July is peak season so I'm not sure what the average or good price mark would be.

Also sometimes you will find crazy cheap flights within Europe itself - I had planned last year to catch buses between cities but ended up with a 20 euro flight to get me to where i wanted to go!

    • Ended up paying around $1700 PP to fly from BNE -> AMS, and DBV -> BNE. I could have got it slightly cheaper, but this seemed to be best travel times, best layovers etc. There were cheaper options for different locations and slightly different dates, but ultimately this is more what I was after
