FREE ALBUM: SPIN Tribute to Nirvana's 'Nevermind'

280

SPIN's August issue pays tribute to the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind, and as part of our package we tapped some of our favorite contemporary artists to cover the influential album's 13 songs, in their original order. The download is called Newermind, and it's our gift to you.

We were happy that two of Kurt Cobain's personal faves — the Meat Puppets and the Vaselines, both of whom Nirvana famously covered during their MTV Unplugged taping — joined our effort. Below you'll find the complete album tracklist, with reflections from each contributing artist.

GET THE FREE DOWNLOAD NOW:
SPIN Presents Newermind is available as a FREE download now through July 25 exclusively via SPIN's Facebook page.

Beginning on July 26, the album will be available for free download on this page.

  • File coming from a secure CDN, doesn't allow multiple downloads… If anyone wants a copy, I can upload it. =P

  • Won't work for me….

Wait what… 20 year's ago!!!, wow now I feel old.

    • Yep, same here…. And yet the flannel look is making another comeback.

    • a friend at work said to me the other day that she got tickets to pink floyd/roger waters. my response -"yeah I saw them….last century….1988….23 years ago……"

OMFG they have absolutely butchered "Come as you are" - sounds like its played by the Chipmunks but when they were high and heavily intoxicated - terrible

Smells like teen spirit is better but still doesn't hold a candle to the real deal…

Lithium is the softest version of it you will ever hear - you keep waiting for the heavy guitar to kick in and it just never does.

Cobain would be turning in his grave - some of the worst covers I've heard. You hear better in most Sydney cover bands…

No wonder it is free, no-one in their right mind would pay for it…

    • Is the Come as you are cover to be taken seriously? Or are they taking the p*ss? I can only hope the ghost of Kurt comes looking for these tools, with his 20 gauge model 11 in hand.

    • They really should have called this "Never mind" ;-)

  • The album that led me to playing guitar 18 years ago :)

  • Just makes me wanna fire up the ORIGINAL when I get home from work tonight….some things just cannot be copied nor covered.

  • obligatory melvins comment. no thank you necessary.

    • It's amazing what one comment can do.. A quick wiki, scan of my music and lo-and-behold, I have a copy of Stag sitting there. Never listened to it, but it's all playing now.

      Thanks! =P

    Bargain for the price..

But perhaps the word 'tribute' means something different at Spin magazine because that was just terrible…

I thought the covers were fine. If you wanted exact copies of the songs, then there's an album released twenty years ago which you'd find right on the money. I enjoy the Spin (see what I did there) that individuals can put on the songs they cover. For instance, I found "Lithium" quite good - the tempo and timing suggest more the consequences of lithium rather than its indications.

For the price, well worth it. This is ozbargain after all.

Totally agree. This is a Tribute album, not a cover album.

I love tribute albums. Sure most of the songs are carp, but you get the odd good one. And that opens up a whole new artist you probably never would have bothered with or even known about before.

Agreed, if I wanted to listen to people doing their best to sound EXACTLY like Nirvana playing songs from Nevermind I'd just listen to Nevermind (or go to any number of dull mid-week pub-rock nights). The whole point of a cover song is to do something totally different with it and to still make it sound good (or at least interesting enough for a listener to sit up and notice). For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG2EGOB9-lc

  • I don't know why everyone is piling on here. It's not the best album in the world, it's a Tribute.

  • may be free but these cover are just woeful!!!
