  • Telstra chat 20 minutes, no read

  • after 10 + attempts, i managed to change to the $50 month to month plan. well i guess we'll all wait and see if the ETC charge comes through

    • What confirmation did you receive confirming change to M2M?

  • -4

"this concern caught Telstra's attention already as many JB Hi- Fi plans were being converted to our BYO plans after a couple of days. Our dedicated team is currently investigating on this…"

    • Is this from Telstra chat? This loophole has been around since they started introducing month to month plan, I'm actually surprised that Telstra haven't fixed this till now.

      • -2

Yes and some more scary texts :(

        • What more scary texts?

          • -1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Like they're going to charge bonuses, accessories, etc back

            • +3

@[Deactivated]: I highly doubt they'll be going after people who have claimed the nest, cancelled early or changed to the $50 plan and cancelled. What they might do is prevent any future customers from switching to the month to month plan.

  • I am wondering if you are existing customer for Telstra. Can you apply for this deal. Thanks for your answer.

    • Unfortunately no. It says in the title "port-in only. Unless you use a number that is not with Telstra

  • Picked up my P4 from JB Essendon Fields and the port-in process took approx. 5 min (comming from Virgin Mobile).

Bloody great deal and a 12 month contract.

  • +1

    Browns Plains, QLD.

Was up front and asked about paying the difference between the 4 and 4XL.

After a bit of a discussion they agreed.

Luckily my port from Vodafone prepaid happened while in store so I walked out with a 4XL for $429 on the $65 plan.

    Pretty good deal I think.

    • +1

So $230 extra for the XL?

      • Yep, they processed the first transaction on the regular Pixel ($199), then did a return and I payed the difference (another $230) to change to the XL.

    • Can you pls post copy of a receipt? Hope some others may be able to secure the same deal.

  • Whats the chance of this working tomorrow? will Telstra be smart for once and know 😂

    • +1

you guys dont get it do you? this has nothing to do with telstra, jbhifi is giving out the phone, if anything jbhifi might cancel the deal which i also doubt, they are giving you a discount phone when you buy a telstra plan through them (jb) but once you have the plan you can do with it as you please, now downgrading a 12 month contract usually incurs a fee, which is listed in the contract, but somehow the online chat has been allowing downgrades to a month to month which renders the cancellation fee to non-existent. the only thing that might happen is that they will block the downgrades and all you have ended up paying is 200 for the phone and 390 for the real cancellation fee. which is $590 dollars which is still considerably cheaper than buying this fookin phone outright.. the s10e is even a better deal at $99 which is the one im in the process of securing once i get my hands on that damn sms

      • +3

Even then… you'd take it to the TIO first with all the evidence. The only way Telstra would get the ETC back is if they took you to court for some type of fraud claim. Using a loophole that they themselves allowed would not be considered illegal.

        • What’s TIO

        • This goes without saying that every person who secures a month to month needs to send the transcript to their email..

  • +3

Good luck chasing people for the ETC… The TIO would back you. You have transcripts from staff saying they will waive the fee.

Always include in the chat that you only wish to proceed with the plan change IF there are no ETC… and they will confirm it.

The $50 m/m BYO clearly says no ETC (just device costs and accessories). Your JB phone is not listed as a Telstra accessory at all, it is considered your BYO phone.

    • yes agree, the title of the contract says JB BYO 65

  • Those who were able to convert from $65 to $50 month on month plan, how long did it take to reflect on your account? I was able to get the plan converted via chat with no ETC, however don't see it my Telstra account yet. Hope they honor what was committed in chat. I have the SR number and also the chat transcript.

    • almost within 2-4 hours for me

      • +1

Just relax, you will get it.🤣 This should win 'Deal of the Year Award'.

      • Is their chat system 24 hrs? I might do another try after midnight; hopefully that guy has already left by then.

      • have you cancelled it? was there a mobile repayment fee? i'm happy to pay the etc, but i am worried that they might spring a mobile repayment on me

    • Did it about 11pm last night. Still yet to be changed

  • Spoke with a Telstra rep earlier today and was told that I'd have to pay an ETC (which I am happy to) and the difference subsidised (somewhere in the range of 800+390). Had a look at the critical information sheet and it does state under 'Mobile Repayment Contract' that if you cancel the $65 JB Hi-Fi Mobile Plan early you would have to pay back the Handset Repayment Amount and any applicable ETCs. Anyone got a final bill yet?

    • Mobile repayment contract is when you signup for a mobile plan which is for 24 months. This one is BYO plan and as such shouldn't be any charge towards handset except for ETC. Happy to be corrected.

  • I just talked to Telstra webchat and changed mine to 50 mth-to-mth plan and its prorated. I doublechecked with the Telstra staff about any ETC or any other fine fee, he said NO. and I asked any repayment of the handset, he was confused and said he checked the bill and it is a BYO plan. i checked the contract too saying the same thing i guess that 199 bucks for P4 is considered as a upfront handset and the 12 mth telstra plan is considered as BYO plan. sounds senseful

    • Nice work Duodeta!

I'm trying to get changed to the $50 Month-to-month, however, finding difficulties waiving the ETC.

      Thanks

      • Likewise, major difficulty trying to swap into $50 month2month, have been offered $10pm discount on existing 12 month contract OR contract changed to month2month but with $390 etc.
I am continually being told by Telstra live chat they can't waive the etc.
        Any thoughts appreciated.

    • jesus if anyone it will be the Ozbargainers who will inform telstra lol, why would you bring up the handset :/

  • I went in to JB yesterday morning and tried to port across. I waited about an hour for the sms but it didn't come. The guy at JB was nice enough to let me pay and leave with the phone and just told me to insert the new SIM when I received the sms within 24 hours.

It's going on 18 hours still waiting now… my question is, since I've bought and owned the phone but haven't activated my plan yet, after 24 hours can I cancel the port with Telstra even though I've signed the contract through with JB?

    • Only sms i received was confirming my ph number before porting started. No sms confirming port was completed. Sure, old sim deactivated, but here is the thing after porting some Telstra msg's went astray to some other number, which appeared in my Telstra ac, as if my ported in number did not entirely override the new Telstra sim ph number. Still no luck with etc. Mystery how some interpret no etc.

  • Hi all,

I had no luck using my phone number that I ported two days ago. Would it be possible to buy a new sim with a new number? Or as I am a client with another number would be the same problem?
If it is possible, would I be able to transfer the 65 plan to my other number?

    Thanks!

    • Having two services with them is not a problem. I had one existing near the end of contract and added new one. I think the reason for delay in your case might be the general porting problem that Telstra is experiencing.

  • +2

okay all done! started with $2 Optus sim and $10 recharged, ported over at jb, paid 199 for phone, got google home nest, jumped online and swapped over to $50MTM on the same day, waited overnight and swapped over to Telstra prepaid just then.

    Thanks everyone! Happy hunting!

    • Did the chat to switch $50MTM happen yesterday or today

  • Wondering if it would be possible to swap the pixel 4 to an iPhone 11?

    • In your dreams

    • +1

Swapped for an iPhone 11 one day after signing up, just simply pay the difference of their ticket prices.

Don't forget to save more with Woolworths' 10% off giftcard promotion and TRS!

      • Sweet. Did you do it at a different store or the same one?

        • Different stores.

  • I've tried to request to downgrade to the $50plan twice yesterday (got the phone deal yesterday) without luck. Any tips on how to this deal through webchat?

    • +1

I had the same issue last night and this morning. Keep persisting though you'll get the one person that will agree to no termination fees like I just got :)
I used the term "upgrading" this time and instead tried the $60 month to month which she was happy to do

      • How is it an upgrade? New features or higher data?

        • +1

It's not really an upgrade, I just used that word so they didn't think I was going to leave as soon as I was out of contract

          • @shapers: Thanks shapers (and op) worked the third time round. I asked to change to $50p/m plan (thinking it would still be 12m contract) but seems like he put me on the $50 month to month plan, which is better for me :)

  • So, I’m still trying to get them to change me to a m2m but still being told I need to pay the ETC. Their new reason is that this is a JB deal and only can waive it. Nothing they can do, go speak to JB lol

    • +1

      • Isn't the chat history available to them? I think they just follow what previous agents tell

        • They do, I believe they only go through previous chat records if you ask them to though.

  • +1

24x7 chat told me to fill out this online form if you haven't received the port in SMS https://activation.telstra.com/enterMobileNumber.html
No idea if this will actually work or not

    • Doesn't work, just tried.

      The Telstra sh1t show continues.

    • Does this work?

      • no it didn't do shit

  • Bit late to this deal, so bare with me.

So my Pixel 2 24 month telstra contract runs out just before Christmas but my wife is with Amaysim $10 per month. So, as I understand it, my wife could go into JB's sign up for this deal, ie port in to Telstra, cancel via Telstra (ETC?) and get charged $390. Then port back to Amaysim for the $10 per month plan, use her existing phone and then I get the Pixel 4 for $589?

Is this right or is there an even better way to do it?

    • That's the easiest way to do it. If you read the people's comments above you, you can try and move to the mTm via live chat.

  • Those who have had their plans changed to $50MTM already, when did you talk to telstra online and when was it changed?
Edit: talked to telstra online on Friday night but still no change, dunno if I should be worried

    • I spoke to them this morning it and was changed right away

      • Same here. Got the SMS with plan changes before he even got back to me via webchat that change was being made. I can also see the changes made in Telstra 24x7 app a few moments afterwards.

      • So if it's changed month to month, can you cancel without paying the ETC ($390) fee?

        • I believe so…it's a month to month plan .

      • What does yours look like? Mine is still stuck on 'JB Hi-Fi Mobile BYO Plan $65 12 Month' even though when I go into contract detail it says Looks like your plan for ********* has expired
        Plan early termination charge$0.00
        Device buy out$0.00

        • Yep same. But it shows 15gb usage limit in the dashboard which is obviously the new plan.

  • Managed to change my $65/Mth 12mth Contract to the $60MTM. around 1PM today
    Attempt 1 (Fail):
    - Used the online chat and was told to pay the ETC of approx $360 by the rep named Timothy James
    attempt 2 (success):
    - Spoke to Frances, ETC was waived (confirmed with frances Ace 3 times throughout the chat)
    - Also added a $9 discount on my home internet bundle
Very happy with the outcome and intend to stay on the $60MTM until a better deal with 40GB+ with the telcos

  • All done, finally.

    1) Got a free prepaid sim from Optus and put in charge to activate. Then got the Samsung S10e from JB Hifi.
    2) Registered claim for the Samsung Buds promo
    3) Contacted live chat to close my old Telstra plan and switch mobile numbers so that I retained my old number.
    4) Contacted live chat again to switch plans to the Medium $60/mth (I wanted the 60GB limit). It took me two attempts until I got someone to do it.

    • Is it possible to start a contract with new number and later on ask Telstra to switch that contract on your existing number?

      • some people have done it. But my local JB says no.

  • Not sure if it is difficult to cancel the M2M $50 plan after upgrade. Are the chat crew helpful?

    • how did you go switching the plan? I haven't tried since. I noticed you were in the same boat as me in that we were told they would charge us for the price of the phone as well.

      • It took several times to get them to do it. Lost the count of how many times I had to ask them.

  • Is everyone getting the Google nest as the bonus?

    • +1

Hi all my first comment on ozbargain but hope its a goodie. Just got my pixel 4 from JB today and told they im on the fence as I have $100 ETC with Optus so they reduced the $199 upfront to $99. I also managed to redeem the Google Nest Hub as well via Telstra website (RRP $199)….on top of that the invoice will show RRP amount so you can claim GST too via TRS. Good luck all

      • How long is the receipt valid for trs?

        • For TRS, the good/s must be purchased inside of 60 days before you leave Australia.

      • Did you port today and it went through with no issue?
        And which JB?

      • "I also managed to redeem the Google Nest Hub as well via Telstra website (RRP $199)"

How did you do that Rob?

        • Text imei1 # to 851

          • @[Deactivated]: Cheers.

When you're on the $65 plan? Then try to go M to M or cancel?

            • @dockersrule: You can claim the hub immediately. What happens with change to M2M depends on your chat outcome.

I don't think hub affects that. It seemed to be a Google store thing (independent of Telstra/Jbhifi)

              • @[Deactivated]: Stupid question, you Text imei1 # to 851 on the phone number that the pixel 4 plan is on yeah?

                • @dockersrule: I did this way

                • @dockersrule: Yes, from the service that has the Pixel attached to it. It didn’t work for me trying it from my other Telstra account.

                  • @Hargain Bunter: Can you do it with the new sim in the old phone?

                    • @dockersrule: Phone doesn't matter. I used a very old phone to do this.

                  • @Hargain Bunter: It worked for me from my other Telstra numbers (did it twice for different phones) which are on old Telstra plans from 2 yrs ago.

                    • @AaronR: Really??? WOW!

                    • @AaronR: imei, then 1, then space, then #?

                    • @AaronR: Didn't work. Did my IMEI, space, # and it came up with:

"Sorry. That IMEI is not eligible for this offer."

                      • @dockersrule: No, just type your Imei1 (from phone package) without anything else. Text that number to 851

It should be a 15 digit number alone, without any space or other characters. Text it to 851
