What's the ozbargain recommended route of getting this deal if you're already on Telstra?

    • Mate ported over to Vodafone on Saturday and then ported back in on Monday to Telstra to get the $400 GC to use towards a new iPhone. The JB staff didn't check how long he ported out for lol.

      • Dont you have to wait 30 days from potting over as telstra check at signup?

        • You do.

        • Officially you do, but they don’t all check / care

        • +2

What Hargain Bunter said. They're supposed to check but not all staff care as they're just there to past time and get paid lol.

      • i thought voda sim activation requires recharge/topup that cannot be skipped ?

    • +1

Port out to Amaysim or some other cheap sim and then you will be a "new" Telstra customer, ready to port back in for this deal. Always cheap sims going on ebay but delivery time might be an issue. Could do pickup if seller is local.

      • What about ALDI mobile? Sims can be had in store easy as

        • As they are a Telstra wholesale reseller more hassle and can take days to change to and from Telstra.

Well used to be the case anyway for MVNOs.

          • @Plutonus: I forgot Aldi uses Telstra, waiting since morning but no update yet.

            • +2

@kendo: ALDI is fine, I changed from them previously

        • I had my wife's line ported from ALDI fine, so I could get this phone. I'm not sure what she will do with 60gb a month, though.

    • +1

It's hit and miss. I ported out to amaysim 2 hrs before to get a similar deal a year ago and it worked. When I tried to do that again this year they made me serve the 30 day waiting period.

I have a suspicion that the JB's that do your sign up can either enter your details in the Telstra system on their computer or call Telstra to have them do it. If they call Telstra to do it then they'll most likely inform JB that you have only just ported out and it won't work but if the JB staff enter the info themselves you'll have a much better chance.

Might be useful for people that had it work to post the store they went to. It worked for me the first time at JB in the Strand, Sydney.

      • +1

I went to one JB Hifi and they asked me straight up if I'd ported out in the last 30 days.
Another one I went to knew that I'd ported out that morning, was happy to try it but wasn't sure if it would work. It did.

      • +1

I have a suspicion that the JB's that do your sign up can either enter your details in the Telstra system on their computer

They'll all do this. I ported back in and since I've previously used that number on telstra, it showed exactly when the number was ported out last time. But apparently some staff just don't care

  • Does anyone know if the $65 plan can be 'upgraded' later to a more expensive plan with more data, without paying ETC?

    • +4

Meaning upgraded then port out out after a month lol

    • +2

      not anymore

      • thanks

    • Based on an internal brochure provided by someone about 2 months ago, I think they closed the loop hole., I think an etc applies to any change of plan from a jb one to a Telstra one.

Still a fantastic deal, basically half price p4.

  • I'm still with Telstra now. If I port out today, how long would I have to wait to jump on this? Looks like a good deal

    • Would like to know this too. Only just did the $45 BYO plan a few months ago but wouldn't mind paying the early termination fee for this.

    • 30 days.

      • +1

Does it depend on the JB sales person checking?

        • -1

Well you would think Telstra systems would simply just block it (no discretion)

          • @tcme: It didn’t for me a few weeks ago when I signed up at the Good Guys as a port in customer after only being off Telstra for a few days.

    • It comes down to how much of a hard worker the staff you're dealing with. Some care, some don't. Just like how they're not supposed to price match online only stores. Some just don't care and will do it.

    • I ported out and paid ETC yesterday night and ported back in this morning.

      • Did the sales person call Telstra or put it all through the computer?

        • put through the computer

  • +1

Yet again, nothing for existing customers. Good deal though.

  • +3

would love a deal for the new iphones

  • What could one sell the Pixel 4 for? Trying to gauge whether one is better off selling the $500 giftcard or the Pixel 4 handset

    • Could get more than $500 from the phone but lucky to get $450 from the gift card.

      • -1

How much more than $500? As the handset costs $199 and the giftcard is free

    • I think it's $500 off a handset or a $400 gift card.

      • $500 giftcard for the 12 month plan

    • +2

You need to sell it for more than $699 to be worthwhile. Or $649 if you'd rather sell the gift card (should get $450) than use it on something down the track.

RRP is $1,049, only problem is buying through Google and other places seem to have bonuses attached to their deals (e.g. bonus $150 Google store voucher). I'd expect people to jump on a Gumtree/fb marketplace ad for around $750-800 but I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

Also note the $500 GC deal is only available for today and tomorrow, otherwise it's only $400.

    • I think it can easily sell for $700+, especially if it's in brand new condition

  • wow, that's a good deal.

i just went and got the $400 gift card on the same plan.

    • Wasn’t $500? Or just = 2 days ago

      • -3

        2 days ago, yep.

        i'm p&33ed if it's now at $500!!

I just missed out on the $45 plan with $200 gift card too..

  • +1

Anyone have luck moving down to the $45 JB plan after taking these deals?

    • +1

Yep I did by going into JB and asking to move from the $65 plan.

      • How did you go about it?

        • +2

When I signed up for the deal at Good Guys the guy said I could change plans later. I tried via live chat but they told me to go into store, so ended up going to JB and just said I’m on a $65 plan and would like to change to a $45 plan, he said cool. I confirmed there would be no ETC and he and the Telstra rep I spoke to on the phone both confirmed there was none, and it was done.

          • @Hargain Bunter: That's even better as I don't need that much data on 65 plan. Wait is that good guys or jbhifi?

            • @CyberMurning: They both have same process.

            • @CyberMurning: I bought the $65 plan at Good Guys and changed plans at JB. But I’m sure you could do it at either as they both have access to the JB plans.

              • @Hargain Bunter: there's an etc on the $45 plan isn't there?

                • @follow: Yep it’s $270. People have talked about being able to move to the Telstra month to month plans and having the ETC waved but I’m not sure if it’s still possible. Here’s the critical summary for the JB plans - https://thegoodguys.sirv.com/Content/2020FY/Brands/Telstra/w…

                  • @Hargain Bunter: thanks. better than paying the $390

                  • @Hargain Bunter: I managed to move to a month to month plan today after buying the Pixel 4 so it is still possible, you just need to get the right chat agent.

                    • @snowl: hi mate, did you first have to move to the $45 dollar a month plan than to the month to month, or was is straight from the $65 dollar a month plan to the month to month? and did you do this at teh good guys or telstra online chat? did you do it all on the same day?

                      • +1

@striker5950: straight from the 65 dollar a month plan to month to month, did on online chat and on the same day

                    • @snowl: Wow that’s an incredible loophole, getting a just released phone for $200 and being able to switch to month to month and then being able to potentially cancel the service straight away. I just bought an iPhone but I’m actually tempted to go for this deal to get an awesome Android to play with for about $250. I’m a bit nervous about getting stuck with the contract and not being able to switch to month to month though.

Do you plan on keeping your service or canning it? Did they confirm there was no ETC when changing to month to month?

                      • +1

@Hargain Bunter: going to can it after a week. I'm really not sure about moving month to month with the waiving of ETC - the live agent said I wouldn't need to pay the entire thing and on the telstra website there is 0 ETC under my contract details - planning on cancelling it soon to find out what actually happened but since I managed to get the google nest hub with it as well going to wait for that to be delivered before I can it

                        • @snowl: Yeah mate you managed to get an awesome bargain! Mad bargaining skills!

      • Sorry just wanted to double check. There is a $270 ETC moving from $65 to $45 and you managed to get it waived? Or is downgrading the plan free and the $270 is if you want to break the contract after the downgrade?

        • +1

Free to downgrade and etc for cancellation of plan

    • +1

Sorry, what's the $45 plan include?

      • +2

50GB downloads, unlimited calls and texts.

        • +1

Thank you. I'm new to this. You reckon if I get the $65 plan then ask Telstra or JB Hifi again to go down to $45 they'll do it? I'm looking at the S10E promo.

          • +1

@DardyMate: You’re welcome! Yep, you will have to go through JB or Good Guys again to change it. I tried via live chat, via phone and at the Telstra store, live chat and phone told me to go to Telstra Store, and Telstra Store told me to go to JB. When I asked the guy at JB he did it for me with no troubles.

            • @Hargain Bunter: Thank you sir

              • @DardyMate: Happy to help!

                • +2

@Hargain Bunter: can this move to the $45 plan be done on the same day?

                  • +3

@Hunnypooh: I was told I had to wait for my plan to be activated before I could switch. This took a couple of days for my number to port across. So I went to a different store a few days later. The same person who sold you they first plan may not be keen to change your plan, but I’m not really sure if their commission would be effected or not.

                    • +1

@Hargain Bunter: Thanks mate. got myself a s10e for $99 via the $65 JB plan and went into Good Guys to downgrade it to $45 JB Plan.

                      • @Hunnypooh: bro we need more info, how many hours till your service wa activated? and did you do it all today same day? what did you say to the good guys people? what info is required?

                        • +1

@striker5950: As soon as your service is activated you can downgrade. Head into TGG and say Telstra told you to go in to downgrade plan from $65 to $45. Just bring your IDs.

                      • @Hunnypooh: Congratulations mate, good bargain!

    • I just tried at jbhifi and the guy said there would be a termination fee if he processes it.

Is there anything specific you guys said?

      • From what I've read don't ask JB, ask Telstra live chat

        • Just tried. They have no access to the jbhifi plans

        • Multiple live chat agents all told me I had to go into store to get JB plans. Having said that Live chat may be able to switch you to a month to month plan (but they have a lesser download limit).

          • @Hargain Bunter: Managed to move to 45 plan at the good guys. Only got 30gb data per month though

  • +1

wonder if we can upgrade to pixel 4 XL

    • +4

      I'm finding out now!

      • +1

Seriously let us know! These plans look absolute killer.

        • +1

They don't have it in their system at atarmon jb.
They're leaning towards it been the non xl
I'm going over there at 430

He said he knew for sure what plan would be best for potential xl customers

          • +1

@iamhurtin: I wonder what that last line means?! I'd happily pay the extra RRP gap ~($429 upfront) for an XL. I think I'd rather go S10e over P4.

            • @mattman: same s10e over p4 anyday, have you seen the reviews, its so bad the battery life. no wide angle camera, and s10e has way better video recording, only thing the p4 has over s10e is the software

              • +1

@striker5950: yep I agree, got my S10e about 3 hours ago :) It's also just plain old better value ($100 cheaper, free buds, headphones in box etc)

          • @iamhurtin: Don't leave us hanging! How'd it go with your chat at Atarmon JB?

            • +2

@dottydotdot: I went into JB in the Galleries and the guy there said that can't do any upgrades. If you try return the phone (unopened), you'd only get the $199 back.

    • +1

normally with these deals, you cannot get anything else other than what is offered.

      • Yeah, pretty sure you're on the money there

  • +1

    This is a great deal!

In the scenario where I have a few Telstra mobile services (for my family) under the single consolidated account (in my name) - if I were to port out one of those services - and then port back to Telstra - AND have them consolidated it back to the original account - would that be still considered a "new customer" ?

    • I have the same query.
