Belong account is showing overdue amount

I was using belong sim but then I moved to another provider. I updated payment details with a card which had less than $1.

Belong dashboard is saying the account is still active, current month was recharged and overdue amount is listed in payment history.

I am wondering why Belong recharged my account when the payment failed. Why they didn't make service inactive unless I do payment?

Did you port your number to your new provider? If you didn’t you need to cancel your service with them, they are a post paid service not prepaid.

    Have you contacted Belong?

  • Most likely, you do owe this amount & will have to pay it, otherwise they'll start chasing you & sending you legal demand letters, followed by debt collectors.

You need to go through the terms & conditions of your service with Belong, and contact them.

Even when you are paying a fixed amount per month, certain services are 'post-paid' and have different terms to proper pre-paid services.

I used to be post-paid with Spintel, and they had a 30 day notice period for cancellation. So, I had to specifically call up & tell Spintel 30 days in advance that I was going to port out, and that I wanted my service cancelled. If I had not done this, and just ported out, then I would have been charged one month's payment, even though my phone service was now with another provider.

  • I need to confirm your personal details first.

  • … contact them, not ozbargain

  • Porting out should be cancellation.

I don't recall their being some 30 days notice like TPG.

Oh and even then I remember TPG basically cancels your service automatically after porting. You lose the current paid month though. That's about it.

Yeah, so you typically cancel a contract by … spoiler alert … cancelling it. Not by changing payment details so no payment can be drawn. If this is what you have done, you are liable for the amount overdue.

  • Your didn't cancel the plan. Just making it so that the payment doesn't do through isn't a cancellation, it just means you owe money.

  • Because you didn't cancel the service. Some companies would charge you a fee on top if you did this.

Look there's a fair bit of misinformation on this thread.

The customer terms for Belong in full are available at:

    https://www.belong.com.au/customer-terms

The terms are pretty reasonable and state:

You may cancel your service by providing us with notice, to take effect at the end of the current monthly payment cycle. For mobile services only, you need to provide us with a minimum of 24 hours before the start of the next monthly payment cycle.

I can't see any referral to debt collectors and it would be unusual to refer what is a $10 to $40 charge to debt collectors. Belong is also extremely difficult to contact. But you can reach them through online channels or call their vulnerable persons line on 1300 235 664 between 7am – 12am (AEST). I reckon you can get this sorted if you need to.

    Good luck.

Yeah, would just cancel it and tell them the full story. They will probably write it off for the OP.

Either way they aren't going to get marked on their credit report or a debt collector sent in for such a small amount. I can't remember the amount but I thought the minimum was $150?

    was it prepaid?

They tried to pull the same sh*t on me on a prepaid sim, i sent them a very strongly worded email and put a complaint to the telecoms ombudsmen because it was utter BS. They sent me an apology a few days later.

    • Belong do not offer any prepaid plans. All their plans are post paid.

    • It’s postpaid. Apology doesn’t always mean you’re right….

      • Sorry you're right, i re-read the email.

I had cancelled immediately after signing up for one of those CR/SB bonus offers. Screenshotted the cancellation etc.

But after the 'plan' was meant to end, i kept getting reminders that my account was overdue, even though the number had been deactivated and no long worked either

        • If the number was ported out or deactivated, they shouldn’t charge you. Belong is a bit dodgy anyway.
