Panasonic Lumix GX85 Mirrorless Camera [4K Video] with 12-32mm Micro Lens [Ex-Display*] $599 Instore Only at JB Hi-Fi

Another cracking but superceeded small form-factor M43/MFT mirrorless camera, this one with a kit pancake zoom lens. Very limited stock, ex-demo, in-store only.

Panasonic Lumix GX850 Mirrorless Camera [4K Video] with 12-32mm Micro Lens [Ex-Display*] $499 Instore Only at JB Hi-Fi

GX850 is even smaller than GX85 but lacks IBIS so would be a non-starter for me as I hate tripods.

    • Got excited thought it was the 12-35

Only those who know or want to know how to take proper photos. It is obviously you are not one of them.

        • It's at the point where the quality is not too far off.

Also, for taking portraits /group photos it's so much easier to just give someone your phone to take a pic than hand them your 'proper camera' as most people don't know how to use them.

Will be interesting to compare pictures on my P30 Pro and Rx100 VA on my euro trip!

          • @Circly: "know how to take proper photos"

          • -1

@Circly: That's because the rx100 and m43 still aren't 'proper cameras', try compare against my Sony a7 III. Besides, a lot of phones "portrait" modes are software simulations. You can tell as the fall off isn't consistent.

            • -1

@RtN: The vast majority don't give a hoot about 'perfect' photos.

            • @RtN: Why do you think they are not proper cameras?

              • @Fiximol: I may have over exaggerated haha I used to have both of those cameras but were never satisfied until I had the Sony A7iii. I felt the rx100 although pocketable, actually using it was a bit of a hassle and wasn't good enough at higher ISO. The E-M1 isn't that much smaller than my Sony a7 either.

                • @RtN: I have the RX100. I also found there is too much compromise just for its size. Did not use it much. Wife like it because of the compact size.

I see a bright future for Sony's prosumer camera. I have started to collect good Sony and Sigma lens for the full frame size Sony camera.

                  • @Black Hole: I would have thought the more compact the more often you would use it! It would be a pain to lug around a camera body and a couple lenses everywhere.

The pocket cameras are a step above phone cameras I guess, i doubt most phone users use Pro mode and play with shutterspeed/aperture/iso.

                • @RtN: What did you find wrong with the E-M1?

      • Yes, but fewer and fewer and certainly upgrading much less frequently.

    • This or the Olympus…

      • +1

Depends on use case, this probably has the edge for video, but the Olympus is probably nicer to use as a stills camera.

        • Mobile is enough for vids for my use!l. Omd em1 it is! Thanks!

      • om d has some nice features. was made to be a modern version of a camera from the 70's.

  • A steal for someone, I'm sure. Looks to be a more complex/professional use case.

    • I really want to embrace m43 as the 75 and 45mm primes are gorgeous but its really held back by sensor size… Low light performance against a7iii is night and day difference. To be fair, a7iii is significantly more expensive however.

      • +2

My gear is mainly used for travel and I don't regret ditching full frame for M43 at all. Low light performance alone isn't worth the cost or weight penalty.

        • +2

unless you're a professional sports or event photographer I'd say "low light" performance is close to completely irrelevant at this stage of the game.

I very rarely need to shoot any of my cameras beyond 1600 ISO, and my 10 year old D700 is comfortable there.

ergonomics and lens lineup should be the number one concerns of anyone looking to buy a camera IMO.

  • Size does matter, unfortunately.

Mark 3 has already been announced and will start selling by next month. What 12 months are your talking about?

The mark 2 is 3 years old and the mark 1 even older still.

    • +1

      That's the em5m3. Not the em1.

      • Ah yes sorry!! Brains all about the em5 now! Let me downvotes myself.

  • This or the GX85…?

    • What's your use case? Mainly photography then the OMD EM1, mainly videography then the GX85 as it capable of 4K.

  • well that was a bumpy ride. someone snatched the one from Bourke street at 9.59am just before me

    • +1

still managed to get one in the end, though

      • +2

Nice! Got one too after a bit of a runabout

        • +2

congrats! I got the $89 lens, too! haha

        • returned my camera, wasn't happy with image quality
