Castrol Edge Engine Oil 5W-40 6 Litre - $39 @ Repco

240

For those of us that need to change oil every 5k, this is a great deal. On top of being less than 1/2 price its a 6L bottle, thought it was a typo but the image shows 6L on bottle as well. Hope this hasn't been posted before, tonnes of other 1/2 prices oils as well if your car has cheaper tastes.

  • seems like good deal, normally 5L will go at this price.
on a side note, care to share why you/someone will/should change oil at every 5K?

if you change your oil every 5k youll notice how dirty the oil is when you are draining it every 5k - just a better maintenance procedure

      • Can you tell me how long it takes you to clock up 5K?

It's been proven that the colour of the oil is a poor indicator of how healthy the oil is. Just because it's "black" doesn't mean it's reached its life span. By your logic, diesel cars would need an oil change every 100kms because that's how long it takes for them to go completely black after a fresh change.

Oil will turn black depending on heat cycles and soot levels.

A synthetic oil is normally good for 10-15k kms depending on driving on conditions. If you intend on changing your oil every 5k kms, just get yourself mineral/semi-synthetic oil (if it matches manufacturer specifications/recommendations).

        • Agreed. I had to laugh at the 5k oil change comment.

If you thrash your car, and/or do a lot of stop/start driving, you should change more regularly (5k km from the usual 10k). It's a precaution, and cheaper than an engine rebuild of a high-strung/turbocharged engine. Heat cycling wears down the oil so to speak, along with the oil absorbing crap from the engine.

      • Where is the evidence for this though?

for me because i use cheap mineral oil.

High power Japanese import turbo engine, oil is life blood of any car & its comparatively cheap to engine rebuilds.

Thanks guys all makes sense, I have recently started changing engine oil myself was wondering shall I stick with recommended 15K or change it more frequently. With whole change costing < $50 full synthetic inc filter, i think i'lll go with shorter intervals now.

  • Can this be bought in conjunction with the 20% OFF all October for Auto Club Members?

The Titanium is the predecessor to the current Edge Synthetic. Looking at the PDS the newer Edge has better lower viscosity at 40 and 100 deg C, meaning it flows better and thus in theory, would produce less friction and heat. Would you notice a difference in the real world? If you stuck to correct oil change intervals and they were both suitable for your vehicle, probably not.

But if they cost the same you might as well get the newer stuff.
