[UPDATE] QLD TMR Rego Paid via Australia Post

[UPDATE] : Can confirm Auspost bill payment to rego received same day. Rego expiry now showing renewed before 12am.

I've read posts on whirlpool stating Bpay payment on due date isn't accepted as payment received by TMR and they'll cut short your next rego renewal based on pro-rata late fee.

I've just paid the rego due today at my local Auspost and seems like it's not instant as the rego status still not updated online.

Wonder if anyone experiencing the same and got their rego cut short on next renewal for payment made at Auspost on due date ?

Why not pay before the due date?

That's not the question but for the sake of answering your question, i forgot about the public holiday yesterday.

You might ask why i don't pay a few weeks or a month earlier, that's not my question either.

What did TMR say when you called them?

Still on the music after half an hour

You got anything to share ?

Service NSW is open 24/7 with credit card payments.

  • I'm pretty sure that if you've paid it and have a receipt (even electronic) then that qualifies as paid if you get pulled over. Bpay does take a couple of business days to register so it's likely the website etc won't update but you should be fine.

I didn't think they cut short the valid dates, but if you pay the bill 10 days late, it just updates from when it was due rather than the paid date. If you're over a certain amount of time you have to get inspected before it can be registered again.

  • It's not classed as paid until they get the money, they are not responsible for how long your payment gets there. I've had this discussion with them - as a customer and as an IT staff member - and there is some 'accepted' industry standard that BPAY is not instant.

Although you'll have a tough time arguing it, that's not what the BPay biller agreement actually says. Basically, the agreement says that a biller has to accept that payment was made on the day that it was made.

For example, from NAB's biller agreement:

The biller must treat Payments as being made on the Settlement Date

      and

Settlement Date means the day a Payer gives a Payer Direction to its Payer Institution.

  • I know this isn't part of your question but why didn't you pay it online?

    • I usually Bpay my bills 1 business day before due but i forgot about the public holiday yesterday.

Then i went with Auspost bill payment thinking it's gonna be instant, so i could save the $4 surcharge from TMR online card payments.

Not worth the hassle from saving $4 i guess.

      • Paying them earlier would probably be easier.

        • i got home loan

          • @dcep: So do I? What does that have to do with when you pay bills?

            • @brendanm: If you have to ask the question, then you're either too loaded to even bother, or simply have no idea at all.

              • @dcep: I have an idea and am not loaded, honestly can't figure out what you are trying to achieve.

                • @brendanm: you have homeloan and you're asking, What does that have to do with when you pay bills?

you have no idea about saving money then

                  • @dcep: The hassle of leaving it until the last minute and possibly forgetting to pay it far outweighs the $0.20 or so interest I may save if I left the money in the loan account. I just pay about 15% more off my mortgage than I have to, and pay weekly to save even more. Much more effective than leaving rego until the last second.

My answer is no that has never happened.

Australia post payments are generally instant payments. Online accounts or online status checkers aren't always instantly updated unless you pay them directly. I bet a cookie at 12:01am AEST give or take a few seconds it will have updated.

The QLD transport site itself mentions nothing about paying at Australia post on the due date and any delays. But it does give a warning about paying it via BPay saying it may take several days to update.

I just ran though the car's details that was paid at Australia post on the due date only 6 weeks ago. The results says expires on the right day next year. :)

Thanks ! Much appreciated for the assurance.

I phoned up TMR and the CSR reckon they always back-date Auspost and even bpay payments.

But I had a feeling the CSR has no idea about payment processing, as that contradicts the bpay statement on their TMR website.

Hopefully Auspost payment is different to bpay as per your case.

Your BPAY payment may take several days to process depending on your financial institution. To avoid a late payment fee check with your bank for how long this payment will take, to make sure your payment is received on or before your due date.
If your payment is received after the due date, your next registration renewal date may be adjusted to allow for the late payment fee.

  • Yes. Th same thing happened with me when I paid at the Post Office. Not only did I end up getting slugged for a late payment but my next Rego Bill was due 3 days in earlier than it should of been. It's the BPay thing… First and last time I used it.
