Denada [Low Carb] Ice Cream $8.50/475ml (Save $3) at Coles

110

Love this stuff, it is low carb ice cream that is just as satisfying as the real thing. Was paying $15 each earlier this year before they were stocked at Coles, so definitely loaded up at $8.50.

Mint choc chip is my favourite (main link). Coles also stock Vanilla (https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/product/denada-ice-cr…) and Chocolate (https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/product/denanda-ice-c…), but not Peanut Butter.

  • On sale till Tuesday 8th October

  • Yep - bought a couple…but shame my local Coles doesn't stock the peanut butter one yet…but at the same time so glad Coles actually started stocking this brand cause they normally charge $11.50 for this and also have it on special like this week as otherwise I was paying like $15 to IGA/standalone grocers without ever seeing it go on special…

Only about 20% less calories than Connoisseur chocolate ice cream.

Can anyone make a nice-tasting, low-calorie ice cream?

The reviews do look good though.

It's Low Carb ice cream, not low cal!
Tasty stuff usually has a high fat content😉 After all, it's ice Cream

Connoisseur has over 20 times the carbs than this - more than a Big Mac /100g!
(I'm eating Connoisseur at the moment - will give this a go for occasional treat!)

Yeah, I realise it’s low carb but the calories are still pretty high.

I suppose it’s great for the keto-brigade. I may have to give it a try.

        • The cal is from the fat content (50% more than Connoisseur), rather than sugar (uses a sweetener to keep cal down).
Low cal ice cream removes the fat & adds sweeteners.

          Looked up the nutritional figures.

          Low-Carb isn't NO-Carb; how could it be keto(fad) friendly?

    • Low calorie ice cream would be flavoured water.

You can buy sugar free ice blocks near the zooper doopers.

      • +1

        You think so?

You can buy low-fat ice cream, and this is low-carb. Why can’t a low-fat, low-carb, great-tasting ice cream be created?

        • +1

Ask Google… The food industry was obsessed with low cal food.
But, I think the scare over (good) fats is over. That's what drove the low cal food industry since the 70's.

The fat gives ice cream (or chocolate) the smoothness & mouth feel.

Traditionally, Ice Cream is a high fat treat. I grew up with hand made ice cream made with cream & quality ingredients - a few times per month!

Removing the fat lowers the cal, but ruins the experience.

For the sake of my health, I limit my treats to small portions of better quality & tasting ice cream & chocolate, rather than having more of inferior low fat products. The energy intake is about the same. My Dr is pleased with the results.

        • You need to understand how food works.

Taste comes from either fat or sugar, if you remove both, you will need a lot of artificial things to make it edible.

The idea of low fat, sugar or carbs.

Ice cream traditionally and primarily contains cream, which is high fat.

Your low fat ice cream you refer to is simply high sugar ice cream, with extra sugar added to make up for the lower fat.

          • @samfisher5986: Thanks for that valuable lesson.

What does sugar (sucrose) provide that say, monkfruit-based sugars or Stevia doesn't? As you're aware, neither are 'artificial things'.

What I am trying to say is, why can't these low-fat ice creams use low-calorie (zero calorie) sugars?

            • @gasman70: Sugar provides a lot more then just some flavour.

Sugar is what gives ice cream the consistency and the easy ability to eat it from the freezer, among other things, without it various other tricks need to be done, with some downsides.

Monkfruit/Stevia only mimic a portion of sugar's taste, thats why you'll always see monkfruit/stevia paired with Erythritol, Xylitol, or both when used in foods like these.

Your last sentence makes no sense.

While yes, Xylitol has more calories, its also in a cream based dessert, it seems strange you see that as the issue, rather then anything else.

Halo top doesn't use Xylitol, although it has a little more sugar as its more of an ice cream, rather then flavoured coconut cream/protein powder/cream that denada is.

              There are always compromises.

Try making the ice cream you are dreaming of yourself, by making a low fat, low carb, low sugar ice cream using stevia/monkfruit, you'll quickly realise that its miles away from what anyone would want to eat.

  • Carb / 100g
    1.2g this Mint Chip (213cal)

  • Thanks.

I didn't even know there was such a thing. (I'm doing a low-carb, Keto lifestyle & would love some ice cream.)

For any T1s here, we do really well with this, no spike unlike some other low carb ice creams.

    • Have 2 T1's in the house and tried this yesterday, they liked it but it's quite expensive for the amount.
We normally have Peters No added sugar Vanilla which doesn't cause them any spikes.

      • It is expensive, but most low carb things are! We use the Peters one too, but sparingly as it requires a larger bolus for us.

  • Always buy this from my local Coles Churhill. Tasted all the flavours except peanut butter. I like them better than regular ice cream.

  • Would be careful! Sweetner is Xylitol, which is what a lot of chewing gums use.

Fine in small doses, but if you eat a bit you'll be squirting like a fire hydrant!

It's also extremely toxic to dogs…

That reminds me… Mother in Law's birthday coming up…

  • Meh, I'd rather being fat eatingmmcdonalds sofr serve than paying this much for a tiny cup of ice-cream

    • Good for you.

    • Are you fat?

    Tried Mint & Choc flavours…
Was curious. Now disappointed. $17 wasted.
Won't buy again. Was more like a fluffy artificial dessert than an ice cream.

    Ingredients:
    Mint
Water, Cream, Coconut Cream, Xylitol, Whey Protein Concentrate, Chocolate (cocoa mass, maltitol, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, natural vanilla flavour) Guar Gum, Sea Salt, Natural Mint Flavour

    Choc
Water, Cream, Coconut Cream, Xylitol, Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Mass, Whey Protein Concentrate, Almond, Guar Gum, Sea Salt

I'd rather limit my ice cream intake to occasional treats of good ice cream, than eat this.

Probably shouldn't have bought a tub of Haagen-Dazs from discount store on same day. Nice smooth ice cream, same size tub, definitely not low carb, and only $2.50!

Tried again - not as I first thought. Was probably a bit soft when I brought it back from shops… It's growing on me👍

      • +1

Yes, does need to be fresh out of the freezer to be at its best, otherwise it is a bit too soft.
