Any Projector Recommendations under $1000?

I'm looking to purchase a projector.

I thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions?

I'd seen the Benq TK800M in this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/485647 but it was a little more than I wanted to pay.

Should I try and pick up a cheap 720p projector on gumtree?

Is there a reasonable 1080p projector new?

I'd be mainly using it for the occasional big football game or movie night.

  • nothing great to recommend, but if you might wanna use it a bit more often and a regular projector isnt very convenient in your setup, this might be something to consider if you can find it somewhere in your budget. a friend had one and it was pretty good and much easier to live with than a regular projector. he basically had it right up against the wall, and in silent mode, but the picture size and quality were quite good.

only good if you would benefit from the convenience, otherwise they arent great value compared to a regular long throw

i personally have a shitty $100ish aliexpress projector. picture sucks, brightness sucks, its annoying to set up etc.
still awesome to watch movies on though. hard to complain about a big picture. cant go too wrong with whatever you end up with

Did a google search on "projectors under 1000 Aud in Australia" and got all these results isn't Google easy these days :)

      got all these results

You mean ads. Those are paid results, arranged in order of how much Google was paid.

Sometimes people want non-sponsored results, believe it or not.

yeah then some ppl would look and click on all (category) to go to non ad results basically I think way too many ppl asking for help here are too lazy to do a basic search yet expect others to do it for them? I did a basic search to lead them to do something for themselves

Getting a machine to search for keywords is completely different to asking people for recommendations. Google has no clue about the quality of the projectors it lists. Google has no opinion, experience, perspective, or knowledge of projectors. Google search is a dumb algorithm that ranks results according to how it benefits Google. When people ask for recommendations on a forum, they are not "doing a search". How do you not understand this?

  • I'm in the same boat and I'm considering the vivibright F30 or F40 (around $300 or $400) - can't decide which one but I'm thinking about using amazon US for better warranty support rather than ebay/aliexpress/bang good etc.

Loud fan apparently but the videos I've seen on youtube look pretty good contrast wise

Can't really justify spending $800 on a 1080p when things change so quick and 4k price dropping fast

I was looking at the M18 (AUN and other re-brands) but it doesn't look quite as good as F30/F40

F40 has low input lag for gaming apparently whilst F30 for movies

F40 is pretty hard to source maybe because it's newer than F30 only option is Amazon US ~$420 shipped Amazon AU $494 shipped

    Anyone gone down this route?

  • I picked up a second hand Epson EH-TW5500 for about $600 on Guntree a year or so ago.

As long as they haven’t been abused, used projectors usually work just fine. You should be able to find a used 1080p projector for far less than $1000 (leaving you some $$ for globes and a screen). Even a $4k one should only be a bit over $1000 second hand.

I bought a used 1 year old BenQ 4K projector for $1k, 1 month back on gumtree. (W1700 Benq). Picture quality (contrast and HDR especially) is rubbish compared to LCD TV but the 120 inches sort of makes up for it.

  • 720p projects a nice, reasonably sharp image. Most people would not perceive the image as "soft" even though technically it is softer than 1080p, it's not a huge leap. Depends how close you sit, and how big the image. I would put refresh rate and other things like colour accuracy, fan noise, and other features above resolution.
