Car Insurance 2019

I have Honda Civic (10 years old). I've been with carnextdoor paying around $60 for them to cover my comprehensive insurance.

I'm thinking about ditching their service as I've had no booking for last 3 months.

Just wondering:

A. Any suggestions for comprehensive car insurance? How much roughly does it cost?

B. I haven't looked into it for while but I'm thinking whether I need to pay that $720 a year given the car is worth around $5000-$7000. In case of worse accident just write it off I guess. Mainly do simple City driving.

What do you guys suggest?

Get comprehensive. No matter what kind of accident you have or who caused it, the insurance company will take care of it and you won't need to post on OzBargain asking how to the get other driver to pay etc ;)

      Agree.
My car is worth $3-4k. I still pay the $800 for convenience.

OP if you decide against comprehensive, at least get Third Party Property to pay for the other car

      • Thanks. I think third party is compulsory by law.

That is Third Party PERSONAL insurance (CTP Green Slip in NSW). It covers peoples broken bodies and doesn't cover property.

Third Party Property pays for the repairs to the Mercedes Benz you crash into.

          this explains it very simply.

Seriously. Why are people so ignorant on these things?

@brad1-8tsi: Perhaps not ignorant…just know that they will get away with it in this country, esp if have no savings etc etc. Slap on the wrist, some stupid $5 a week repayment plan and even for that to happen it may take over a year.

          • @brad1-8tsi: Agree, perhaps not ignorant - but also probably an oversight by many Australians… Given the CTP in NSW is quite expensive, many people might think this covers them for property as well as people. Silly, but concerning.

          • @brad1-8tsi: Thanks for clarifying.

Wow … $800/year on premiums, another $600 on excess if you have to make a claim … another $200/year in jacked premiums when you make claim. Pretty expensive convenience.

Yes, I agree. I'm paying lazy tax. I had bigger issues to deal with this year. I'll review and revise next year.

Excess is more like $800 IIRC. This is the price of "turbo effin whoosh!":-)

you should be telling op NOT to get insurance, so he can post a follow up thread in a few months for our enjoyment

This guy gets what OzB is really about.

  • A:
Checking comprehensive car insurance prices is one of the simplest tasks. go check via all their websites, my experience aami the cheapest but it’s going to depend on your circumstances and vehicle
    Go check them all..

    • Depends on the underwriters.

We were with Suncorp, switched to AAMI when it fell due as they were cheaper (and same underwriter).

Switched again (to NRMA) when AAMIs premiums jumped up, (supposedly) due to more claims being lodged for my car model.

You will still need 3rd party property insurance, to cover any damage to another car if you crash. That costs me $240. An extra $400 a year isn't worth it for me for an old car, but as bohn says, if you plan to have accidents it is good value.

    • Planned accidents are not accidents at all ;)
I still think it's okay to have comp. with old cars. Also not everyone pays as much as you in insurance (admittedly some pay a lot more).

      • If you plan to fail what have you done?

    • Who is your insurer?
What what happens when you are not at fault?

  • Don't forget with third party, fire & theft insurance.

    • Your car is covered for market value for fire & theft. Usually up to $10k.
    • Damage to other property.
    • Accidents caused by other cars, if you can prove it.

Downside is your car will not be covered if you're at fault. Now weigh out is it worth having comp insurance on an old car.

  • If you go through Budget Direct/Coles or one of the other really budget insurers, you should only be looking at $500/year.

    • Thanks. I'll check those two

Try Woolworths, and there is a coupon that gives you $100 gift card back. Good price for this year, next year shop around again.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/463081

and the code still works (as of 2 days ago when i used it)

In my case it ended up cheaper than others 3rd party property rates.

Also you can elect a number of kilometres to use each year and save even more if that suits you.

        • i agree , woolworths is cheapest when compared to budget direct/coles. i did mine 2 months back and woolworths is cheaper

          • @ravBlr1982: Has anyone claimed with Woolworths? Wondering what experiences were like when it came to the crunch, so to speak.

  • When you start a new policy, they always ask how many KM you do per year - which I assume affects the premium.

How do they actually track that if they don't also ask how many are on the clock when you open the policy or make a claim?

    • I think they do ask? And it does affect the premium.
Been caught on the wrong side of that before. They can refuse cover if you've gone over whatever numbers they've recorded somewhere.

      • I mean what if you just underestimated?

The online quote things don't ask for kms done already - maybe when you do final signup?

Also Bingle seems to be waay cheaper than the others, like $550 vs $1000+ for me. Just how bad of an idea to is it to go with them?

        • You don’t give it for the quote, you give it when you sign up.

If you underestimate you can call them and change the number - obviously for a cost. You can over estimate, just your premium will be higher. At some point unlimited kms work out cheaper, you can play with that on thequote

          • @RockyRaccoon: Right. I doubt I'd do over much over 10,000kms unless working for a ride-share company.

Do you know if you can cut the policy short and get a refund on the rest of the year, if you sell the car for instance?

  • Try Coles insurance . Reasonable rate if you get a quote on internet. Unlike AAMI which charges double excesses I.e. standard excess of $650.00 + additional excess you add on, they just charge you the higher excess amount ( if the accident is due to your fault).

    • This was high. Quoted around $750. I am currently paying $720

  • progressive insurance

I'm contemplating to get third party cover.
Does look like I need theft and fire.

Do people know what happens when you are in accident and not at fault.

  • Yoman,
“Do people know what happens when you are in accident and not at fault.”
Some years ago I was with AAMI third party cover, and the above case happened to me. AAMI just pushed me aside without rendering any help. I suggest you go for compressive with high excess ( to bring down premium sum), so when not in fault the insurance company will do the job; if in fault let your car be written off then.

    • That's a good tip.
So what was outcome in your case? You chases other drivers insurance yourself?
