iPhone Earphones with Mic "a-Jays Four" $61 (Shelf Price $99) Harvey Norman

50

I impulse purchased a pair of in-ear replacement earphones with call capability today to replace my Motorola Bluetooth S305 stereo headphones - I just don't think iPhone does the bluetooth audio thing very well at all.

A review here on these a-Jay Four's
http://www.gadgetmac.com/gadgetmac/2011/1/31/jays-a-jays-fou…

The shelf price was $99 at Harvey Norman Broadway NSW. Looked at the box for a minute, turned to the sales rep with google loaded and said "they are $61 online - wanna price match"? Tap tap tap on the register, sold for $61. It wasn't till after I left the store I realized that's a US price. nice discount for an extra minute and one question.

EDIT - Receipt uploaded for price matching

  • Good deal! How are you liking the earphones?

    • Out of the box, they lack the kickin bass that I have enjoyed with the Senheissers, but the senheisers i have don't have iPhone mic or control. I hope that the burn in tonight will improve the bass performance. Mids and highs are perfect.

They are worlds apart from the standard apple kit ear phones, but a piece of fettucini would be too.

I also use(d) a jawbone icon Bluetooth headset as well as motorolla s305 stereo headphones and I think this will be a nice compromise of good sound quality with call capability, and no Bluetooth troubles.

I pop one earphone out when on calls, else I become very concious of my own voice with the isolation.

      • note the logitech 400vi have mic etc, and are pretty awesome. currently half price at dse 49.95 :)

  • shame they don't make these for the blackberry. I was actually looking at these today but at 99 dollars and not having an iphone, it put me off. At 61 dollars I think thats even cheaper than the threes i was checking out at HN so its a good deal.

how you finding the flat cord too? I quite like how it looks.

    • I really like the flat cord - it does a great job at not tangling up and seems to suit the iPhone design. The jack is a 90 degree so sits flat cross the top.

They should work fine othe BB. I have used BB mic and call control headphones on the iPhone.

  • Sounds good! I guess they focus more on sound reproduction from bass. And with the bass - are you getting a good seal?,

I recently got some Xears Resonance - they got great reviews, but meh, can't find the right tips and i don't like the design. Review here - http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/478568/multi-iem-review-…

    • There are four different sized ear canal silicone tips ithe box, so will try a few different tips. I will probably try a different size in left and right since the size differences are so small.

      Thanks for the review.

  • I bought a pair of these off eBay for $52 but the controller doesn't work so I got a $40 refund, they're pretty nice headphones and other people really like the design, they have pretty good audio but as stated the bass isn't that high but stills sounds nice, they feel a bit weird in my ears but I think it's because they go in nicely, they feel like they aren't 'fully' in but I think I'm just too used to $5 headphones that tear apart your inner ear.

Overall great headphones that I would buy again (with a working controller).

  • Nicely bought!

  • Those headphones look really nice. Does anyone know if they are fully compatible with Samsung Galaxy S II?

And some reviews have mentioned that the "highs could be brighter" I'm no audio buff, but are they good enough for listening to a wide variety of music?

    • I have these phones with SGS1 and you need a converter cable to make the buttons work, since the wiring is all different (its all on XDA forums). quote from whirlpool:

"the samsung headphone jack layout is four pole t/r/r/s left right mic ground i think
it will not recognize an aftermarket headset with iphone jack config where the ground and mic is reversed or t/r/r/s left right ground mic the samsung pin layout is similar to nokia's"

I think SGS2 would be the same. So use something like the following then you'll be right:

My 2 cents just for you :)

      • I appreciate you taking the time to type out your 2 cents worth. But just FYI the SGS II utilises different wiring now (probably in response to all the rage from SGS I owners).

After a bit of research I've discovered that 90% of controls optimised for iPhones work on the SGS II. The volume up/down functions however don't work on the SGS II. Which I guess answers my question on whether these are fully compatible.

I can live without volume up/down controls. I just need some more real life opinions on the sound quality of these headphones.

  • They are A-Jay Four not R-Jays… I bought a pair of these recently and loved them! The flat cables look really good and are very functional too. The only con is that the bloody child-proof packaging took me 10 mins to open.

I can't believe HN price matched that, I bought mine for around $65AUD on ebay, can't get a cheaper price here.

    • Thanks. Will update the title. Yeah, the pack made me feel a little dumb as I looked like a 6 year old about to spit my dummy out the front of the store trying to key the packet. I did say impulse purchase :)

  • If anyone knows how these compare to Apple In-Ear headphones, please let me know. Thanks.

    • +2

These will destroy anything apple has to offer, they're well worth the price.

Edit: Looked up the inner ears and supposedly they're better than the stock earphones, these will still be a lot better.

      • Looks like I'll be getting these then thanks.

  • omg!
awesome find, i have been contemplating whether or not to get these!
61$ is too awesome to resist
going to HN tmr to get a pair!
oh and do upload the receipt!
    thanks :)

  • +1

Can you please upload the receipt… thanks!

  • Thought I should comment on my impression of these earphones, the couple of quick reviews I looked at instore didnt mention;

    1. the bass is missing the punch I crave. It sounds like its not sealing correctly in my ear, but it is. its just missing that punch that I have come to love with my Senheiser in-ears.

    2. the design of the earbud leaves a sharp angle exposed, and that corner touches my ear - initially its no problem, but as you move around, its a little uncomfortable.

    3. they are very bright/sharp. I dont know if thats the correct term to use, but thats the way I would describe them. it has the effect of me wanting to turn the volume down, which i probably should, but then there is even less bass. Playing with the ipod EQ settings just fakes things up and makes a bit of a mess. I just had another listen to them, and another word comes to mind - 'tight'. While the bass isnt prominent, it is very tight and clean. Its probably the way things should sound and the problem is probably my aging ears :)

I really, really like the fat/flat cables. it does work at preventing tangles, and it encourages you to roll them up correctly. but, what i dont like about the flat cables, is that because the cable will bent one wway, but not the other, they feel stiff around your head. my senheiser has a very thin rubbery cable which gives a very comfy feel, but they do get tangled very very easily.

Call quality is excelent. the mic is in just the right spot and seems to block out traffic noise, which I didnt think a mic could do (as opposed to the software on the phone filtering it out).

Sad to say that I will be going back to my Motorola blutooth headphones, with their drop in SQ and need for charging, at the convenience of wireless. I really didnt realise how much of a pain cabled is for when your out and about. wired is definately better for performance and comfort when i am couching it up.

thought I should mention these few things.

  • I just bought these from my local Harvey Norman, easiest price match ever.

The headphones themselves have an awesome design and the sound quality, while it didn't blow me away they do sound better than my Apple In-Ears. Happy with the deal.
