  • What's the difference between the two brushless drool combos?

    • According to this comment the more expensive FMC628 'has the drill with the hammer function'.

    • +4

One uses a stack of tissues, the other uses a towel to clean up the drools. Both methods are brushless.

    • Hammer drill and 2 batteries

    • +6

The hammer fucntion can be useful for masonary, but as a home user usually I use a 240V mains drill for masonary. The mechanism adds length and weight to the cordless drill. Unless they are trade quality drills (more expensive than this). I find the hammer function not comparable to a 240V mains powered drill. For $20 extra its worthwhile funtionality if you ever want to put a small hole into a brick. Probably not that good for going into pebble-crete.

      • +3

+1,corded Ozito SDS drill user here and it goes through anything like butter.

        • Bought the same on the weekend. Can't believe I wasted years and money on these crappy "Hammer Drills" that do absolutely nothing. SDS Rotoray flew in the brick, wouldn't use anything else now.

          • @iShibby: Which one?

          • +1

@iShibby: ^ Yup. Its like a trade secret we wish everyone knew.

When we hear civilians (jk) having trouble hanging stuff in brick/concrete, we know the issue already.

            • +1

@Ulysses31: Sounds like something my old man narked on about that went in one ear and out the other. I'll be moving into a double brick all walls (even internal) soon, no doubt be needing to drill a few holes at some point. Haven't touched a drill since high school though!

              • +2

@Xizor: I have the bigger ozito one, 1600w. Goes through brick and concrete well. In hindsight I think that if you're not drilling holes every day, the 900w would be plenty.

      • +2

Yeah the hammer mechanism just adds size and weight and I've previously found it to be useless on these devices. I skipped it and went for the normal brushless model. Instead I use a 240 hammer drill for masonry, although SDS Rotary would be best.

  • +5

What's that? Ahh yes, the sound of yesterday's orders being cancelled, and subsequently reordered today…

    • I can't seem to be able to cancel my order. The order is at status "ordered" but I don't have the option box to cancel.

      • +2

Live chat customer service, they should be able to help you or credit you the difference. Amazon's customer service is top notch.

        • Thanks worked like a charm. even waived expeditied shipping.

  • Thanks op! Ordered the 628. What's a good drill bit set for a casual diy to get?

This the 2nd time I bought something off ozbargain when I check it after midnight :P

  • what is the availability of larger batteries discounted compared to ozito , or are these fat max more a buy, use and throw when batteries are dead ?

nice with ozito has been the 4ah batteries when on special or the 2x 3ah batteries and charger for $69.

    • +3

I think the latter. Those batteries are retailing for $60 each so current users are probably buying the first kit for spare batteries.

DeWalt and Black and Decker are made by the same company. The batteries are reportedly electrical compatible and may be interchanged by removing plastic tabs.

Seriously though, how many batteries are you going through? The provided batteries should last the average home user for years.

  • +1

What kind of quality tier are these? Ozito, Ryobi or DeWalt?

    • +3

Made by the same company as DeWalt but positioned a step below.

  • +1

Don't know anything about home DIY, but I just moved to a new place and I would like to drill a few things to my ikea karlby. Would this do the trick?

    • +1

Yes - but for anything where you're driving screws in you're much better off with an impact driver not the drill.

      • What would you recommend? Would that be a better all around tool to use for DIY stuff?

        • +1

impact driver is just for driving screws (and is better at it than a drill driver)

drill driver can drill holes as well as drive screws. So all rounder the drill driver is the only option.

        • +3

          ideally you want both

          • @knk: Yerp, my old 12V Ozito impact driver made screwing into timber a breeze so I assume this 18V will be even better.

          • @knk: Got it! Thanks a million!

  • Scored the hammer drill. Fatmax is very good. Thanks OP!

  • Missed out on the combo deal previously - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/475345

Started keeping an eye on it but never dropped. Lucky I checked OZB. Got them in combo at a better price!

    Thanks OP

  • Thanks OP !!!
Was disappointed with missing yesterday’s deal but you have delivered!!! Cheers

  • STANLEY FATMAX FMC628D2S-XE18V Brushless Drill Driver Kit sold out

  • Cheers OP, my 8 year old 12V Ozito literally died on the weekend so perfect timing!

Grabbed the STANLEY FATMAXFMC608D2S-XE18V Brushless Drill Driver Kit and STANLEY FATMAXFMC647B-XE18V Brushless Impact Driver without battery and charger

    • you didn't get the FMC628D2S which has hammer function?

      • +3

Nope, I bought the Ozito Rotary SDS Hammer Drill on the weekend for masonry work. These drills with "Hammer" function are never any good. The rotary went through brick like butter :)

    • +1

same with my 10 year old ozito. did me well through all sorts of home use and abuse.

if this combo can get me through a similar time I will be stoked.

      • Yeah I love Ozito products, for the price and warranty you can't beat it. Unless a cracking deal like this comes along lol

  • +1

STANLEY FATMAX FMC628D2S-XE18V has sold out at the deal price

  • Thanks managed to grab a 628!

  • Impact driver torque. Any good for wheel nuts?

    • Nope.
Regardless of brand, they're a toy compared to the dedicated wrench.

PSA: Use them tighten wheel nuts, and baby Jesus will cry.

      • I use an impact driver all the time for wheel nuts. Obviously it doesn't work if the nuts are tighter than 180NM. But for passenger vehicles it's fine.

        • +2

180 seems in the upper end for these? Wheel nuts around 130NM according to CSA.

Naturally, getting your car back from a tyre replacement they are 2500000NM.

        • We only ever do ours by hand. Tool only, no extension/bar.
And an impact driver doesn't stand a chance getting them undone.

Impact wrench is the right tool. But for occasional use, just use hand tools.

Just our experience. Welcome to disagree.

    • +2

Generally impact drivers aren't any good for that sort of high torque stuff.
      You'll want an impact wrench.

    • Never mind. Impact drivers aren't listed any more. Must be gooooone

      • +1

Try this link it's sold out but still available on back order if you didn't mind waiting (you can always cancel it as well, you won't get charged until the order is processed ready for shipping).

        Edit: Completely sold out now

  • I've already ordered the 628D2S drill with the hammer function but I'm still undecided about it. If I'm not going to use the hammer function so much and also because apparently, from the comments above, it's isn't much of a help on a cordless drill, should I order the 608D2S instead? Is the hammer function worth an extra 17 dollars?

    • +2

IMO yes. On the odd occasion if you might need to drill into brick to mount a hose reel as an example. You'd regret not spending that extra $17.

If you're doing a whole lot of masonry work though then a rotary hammer is the way to go.

    • +2

I wouldn't waste the $17 in my opinion. "Hammer" functions on drills are rarely any good. Grab yourself a Rotary Hammer Drill for masonry work and you'll never look back. I grabbed this on the weekend and it made light work of drilling holes in my bricks - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-900w-3j-rotary-hammer-dril…

  • Thanks OP, bought the 628 and the 647 earlier!

  • Can you use the 628 as a screwdriver also?

  • Any 3D printable adapters?

I've got Ozito,Makita, Aldi (2types),SCA brushless Li batteries, and a Black and decker (NiMH, basically eneloops, still going strong).

  • +1

Ended up buying the Brushless Hammer Drill Driver without battery and charger (already have ythose from Masters deal)
Hopefully I don't regret my purchase.

  • Cheers OP :)

Btw anyone managed to register it on their site to get the additional 2yr warranty?

With the last step there seems to be some kind of a glitch where there's no way to add/register it.

  • Just got this delivered. After testing it drilling on some wood, tried to charge the battery on the included charger, but no light comes on.

According to the drawing on the charger there should be blinking green light while it's charging, though can't be 100% sure as no manual in the box.

Have I got a defective charger? I tried both batteries.

    • The light is supposed to be blinking green when charging and solid green once charged. Might be a stupid question but you slid the battery all the way into the charger until it clicked into place right?

      • Yes it "clicked" into place. I also tried a volt-meter on the +/- terminal (left-most and right-most pins) of the charger, and it read zero volt.
Also is there supposed to be a manual in the box? I couldn't find any manual in the box.

        • Yeah there's supposed to be a thin manual and warranty leaflet

          • +1

@Scope: Hmm, mine may have been a returned item then. The box is damaged and dated 2017.

  • STANLEY FATMAX FMC628D2S-XE18V Brushless Drill Driver Kit

    Estimated arrival date: 17/11/2019 - 09/01/2020

    WTF

I ordered the above and a impact driver

The impact driver came but the kit with the hammer driver and batteries been delayed till October to Jan

  • I had a play with the kit and it runs well. There are a few undocumented changes from my older brushed version from Masters
    - The charger is now a slow 1A charger instead of the 2A version they used to supply
    - The chuck is now plastic instead of all metal.
    - No battery level indicator on the drill any more.
    - Only one magnetic screw holder (from two)

Overall the drill has a better motor which is more powerful and efficient but there is some evidence of cost cutting.
