Is it hard to find a lobby online?
I couldn't tell you, I haven't played for months but I did put 100+ hours into it and never had an issue finding a lobby at the time. I'd be shocked to find it dead though, MH games have legs and this is exclusively the only MH game on Switch right now.

Even if they don't have stock online you can select click and collect for free pickup. It worked for me in the Target Bourke St Melbourne location.
