Anytime Fitness - Is the Keyfob Deposit/Fee Refundable?

I'm at the end of my year long contract with Anytime Fitness and I could swear when I signed up they charged me about $70-$80 for the Keyfob (the little e-tag that let's you get in) that was supposed to be refundable at the end.

I think I was told this explicitly by the guy flogging memberships, but of course being a year ago I could be mis-remembering. It should be in the contract, but I've moved around a bit since then and can't find it. Called the place I signed up at figuring they'd have easy access to a copy of it, but they haven't found it and rung me back (as we discussed) in 4 biz days.

Just wondering if anybody else signed up and was definitely told Keyfob fees/deposits were refundable at the end or if they already got such a refund?

Staff member I spoke to said they never do that and the guy I likely signed up with is no longer there, but so what? If he sold me a membership under false pretences at Anytime while in their employ it shouldn't matter.

  • I found these seemingly standard contracts that says it's not refundable at clause 12.4. Unless you've got evidence to the contrary it seems as though it's a standard non-refundable cost.

    • wow $60 max fee for a tail gating.

      • Thought I saw $50 on the door of Hurlstone park.

        Seems worth the risk/reward.

    • Damn.

I still want to see my contract, but I guess it looks grim.

I swear the guy told me it was refundable or I probably wouldn't have joined. Guess it's hearsay at this point.

      • Don't know why the rep didn't point me to the standard contract available online (via their website).

        • The rep tricked you.

          • @orangetrain: I mean the one who I spoke to the other day who was telling me it would probably be in my contract.

      • doesnt matter if he did or didnt though, its whatever is in the contract.

        • The rep from the other day said the guy who signed me up may have written something on my original contract waiving the fee.

Next time I'm in the area where I signed up I'll go in and see if we can dig it up. I doubt it's a high priority for them to find on their own recognisance after just one phone call.

  • you can sell them. see them at gumtree

    • The rep I spoke to mentioned that. Obviously it's not going to be as quick and easy as a refund, and you won't get it all back.

You can also re-use your own if you decide to join again later and haven't lost it.

    • $30-$50 seems to be the going rate for a "used, sweaty," Anytime Fitness Keyfob.

Rep told me they sell for $69-$100 at the gyms with new memberships, depending on location.

  • I doubt it would be a full refund having been in sweaty hands for a year. The fobs cost so little, they gorge on the administration of it.

    • +1

Yeah, I don't see how they could have anywhere close to $69 worth of electronics in them.

Just wipe them down with Dettol. Takes 2 seconds at most.

      only $3 made in china

      • So a 23x markup at my joint.

        • exactly, and joining fee is basically 100% profit for them, no cost attached at all to it.

          • @Taro Milk Tea: Now I AM sure I at least got the joining fee waived.

Browsing Gumtree for keyfob sales info I see a lot of people on-selling their memberships. I wonder if it's worth selling my off-contract membership?

Surely that's worth more than one that's got x months left on it, assuming I can do that.

basically they can do this all the time, no need to wait for their regular "ONE DAY SALE" crap…just need to keep pushing it further when planning to join.

Absolutely you can, just need to terminate the agreement at the end of the term. They don't care who's using the FOB and such, they don't track you physically

              • @Taro Milk Tea: I'll run it by 'em next time I'm in there and see what the process is.

Was assuming they'd pull something like making the contract for the new guy/buyer have to be a min of 6 months or something.

                • @CrankyCarrot: just ask them for free PT sessions if you decide to continue with AF, guaranteed they will give it to you.

answering to your original post, no FOB is not refundable, never was.
So, maybe you got mislead, or remember incorrectly.

Call up and request to cancel membership within the minimum period and I bet they'll suddenly find your signed contract!

    • I already cancelled via email - it has to be done 30 days in advance based on their clauses.

Sent through the cancellation request and asked how much the keyfob refund would be, and the answer was zero!

If you are unsure about cancelling after your contract is up, you can always put through the cancellation request anyway and then retract it just before the 30 days is up, rinse and repeat, apparently.

  • Hi, I was told when i signed up they were refundable - but upon cancelling, apparently they are not… i don't have evidence of the conversation - just wondering what others thought? Thinking about going to fair trading on this one..

    • You have to look at what the contract says.

My contract said it was non-refundable and I didn't comb through it until the end when it was too late. They told me the guy who signed me up wasn't with them anymore. Pretty sure I put all that in earlier posts.

The overwhelming sentiment from the forums here (from memory) was that it all comes down to the contract. Still have my useless keyfob.

  • @Larry2512
I also signed up a year ago under the assumption that the fob key was refundable (I'm 99% certain this is what the sales rep told me). I cancelled my membership last week and the received a call saying "it's in the contract that it is not refundable".
To conclude: seems like it's a common dodgy sales technique they use to sign members "refundable" fob key, knowing that in the contract it isn't written.
I will write them a email detailing this and see what they come back with.

    • It's interesting to see that a few people (just the ones who happen across this forum) swear they've been told this (myself included). Pretty easy for them to expect people to forget or cast doubt on their own memories when most contracts signed up for are only eventually read a year later when they expire and you're told otherwise.

      Scaaaaaaaaaaam?
