Qantas PER - SYD Worth The Upgrade?

Hi All,

I seek some advice here, i have been offered a Bid to upgrade on an upcoming trip from Perth to Sydney on Qantas. The flight seems to be listed as 737-800 which looks like an older plane. I have not flown business before and my partner will be joining me on the flight as well, so essentially the points double for an upgrade for both of us. I would like to try out business but not sure if its worth holding off? eg- better offerings via redemption with other airlines or better plane (flat bed etc..)

I have plenty of QFF points (300k) from some credit card deals listed, but not sure if my points could be put to better use?

I Feedback would be appreciated. Cheers

Yeah, for 25,000 points, it's worth it for the somewhat long flight. However, it's on the 737, so the business seats are basically like modern premium economy seats. I'd say that it's worth it for the ground experience as much as the sky experience.

When I fly business domestic (company pays, or points, never would pay cash), I do quite enjoy being able to get some work done in the lounge beforehand, going through priority security lanes, getting priority boarding so I can get back to doing some work on the plane. I'm pretty big on the hustle and working any moment I get the chance, even if it's just replying to emails. Probably a bad habit, but I think all those work hours add up and I'd rather be working than waiting in a queue.

    • This trip is for pleasure, so not too fussed. Might hold out for a better opportunity

Save your points for a much longer flight - I would say its not worth it.

Not on a 737… An A330, perhaps! See if you can switch to an A330 fought and then bid?

I'm happy to upgrade any flight over 4 hours. Though are you able to find a flight on a A330? Much more comfortable

Wouldn't bother on the 737. If you can get a 330 flight, that would be worth it.

A330 and always Sydney to Perth if anything! These days Perth to Sydney flights are only around 3.5 hours (less with a good tailwind). Alternatively jump on the app as soon as checkin opens (24 hours before) and choose an exit row or bulkhead seat!

    • Thanks for your input!

With 300,000 points available I reckon 25,000 for this upgrade is worthwhile. Just. Business lounge in Perth is very good (much better than Qantas Club). Seats on board are wider (but not the lie-flat seats like the A330). Food and wine much better on board.

The 737 business experience is significantly less attractive than the A330 though. This is a great upgrade.

Remember the Sydney - Perth flight is slower (wind direction) so you get better bang for your points the other way.

    • Thanks for the tip, its more like 50k as im sure the MRS wouldnt be too happy with me upgrading and her left in cattle class :)

Our first upgrade to business was on an ADL - DRW flight. We bid the minimum number of pure points and were successful.

If you have the points and no immediate plans to use them I would. It will be a fun experience for you and your partner and it really is a different way of travelling.

    • This was what i was thinking about but i didn't seem to have the option to bid points only. Is there something i am missing here?

There was when we did it. But I caveat that with this was several years ago and I've tended to save my points now for classic flight rewards.

If it a points upgrade at 25K for both of you I'd still be tempted frankly. Primarily because you don't have immediate plans for your points and it is a nice way to fly.

    +1. 738 business won't be awesome!

I would only consider the upgrade on the red eye flight in reverse. From memory it took about 5hours so just enough for a quick nanna nap but it helps as being a young parent I value my sleep! Even then I'd only value the lowest end of the bid (minimum) or a classic upgrade given Qantas just adjusted points for upgrades.

Otherwise, save yourself the $250 (market points value) and enjoy the flight. Perth - Syd is only about 4 hours not worth the hassle. At least Qantas is a all inclusive carrier with food and in flight entertainment!
