  • Is it true you can grow your own ginger at home garden?

    • Curious as well xD

    • +2

      Yep, it's just a root

      • That's what he/she said… :P

      • +7

Technically you eat the rhizome, not the roots.

        I’m fun at parties.

    • Takes a lot of time to grow….

      • +2

~12 months from planting, which the season to plant is early spring. In partial sun, moderate soil.

After that it grows like weeds before going dormant.

      • -2

Takes a lot of time to grow….

Put it on steroids and should grow in no time.

    • +1

they are not easy to grow, you need a tropical humid environment

    • Oh, sorry.

Half the site is dedicated to bending/breaking rules to save money:

        Pirating
        vpn bypassing region locks
Breaking EULA (like Microsoft oem keys)
Scamming businesses who make pricing errors

If there was a way to put something through a Web store with an "incorrect" price, I wonder what the logic is that it is OK but doing it at a physical register brings out the moral police all of a sudden….

        This place is weird.

  • Sorry, our site won't work on your browser
To shop with us, please install the latest version of one of these:

    Google Chrome….

    Err it tis Chrome

    • Maybe check whether you're running an extension like User-Agent Switcher. I have one of those installed, and saw a few of such errors before I realized what the problem is.

    • International talk like a pirate day was yesterday….

  • So since Coles doesn't like my Chrome.
Is this Chinese ginger? Or aussie?

    • Night soil goodness.

      • -4

        probably from Hongkong

    • +2

      Australian Grown

    • As per my comment below, there is no such thing as imported fresh ginger in Australia. You were conned by the seller at VicMarkets so suggest you speak to them to stop spreading fake news and lies.

  • Ginger Ninja time

  • Thanks OP

"Normally over $20/kg"you shop in the wrong places i haven't paid more than $8 for years.Search out a couple of fruit and veg shops in your area on facebook and watch for good buys.

    • young ginger is perhaps what you were referring to °°°

      • Even that was through the roof not long ago, in Springvale VIC which has the cheapest fresh produce in Melbourne, Way better than The Victoria Market.

  • Can someone confirm this is NSW only or available elsewhere?

Can't you click the link, set tour store/state & see?

The link doesn't work for me.

But it says National in the url

      • It doesn't show the price online for the store. But it is labelled $8 in Sydney store

    • Just went to my local store in WA and it was $25 a kilo

This is one of those things (like Asian vegetables) never get them from Colesworth as they are over priced in the 1st place. Ginger at most Asian grocers are now at $7/kg.

    • -3

Ginger at most/all Asian grocers is from China. Having seen them use human waste as fertilizer, i prefer not to eat their fresh produce, especially root vegies like this.

      • +1

I think you've mixed up ginger with garlic. Yes, the garlic is from China but Ginger is definitely from Australia. Just like the rest of the bok choy, kailan, choy sum… etc.

        • -3

Nah, I shop at VicMarkets, the cheap ginger is from China (usually not labelled, but i used to ask), the expensive ginger is labelled from Buderim/Australia

          • +5

@[Deactivated]: You should check your facts from reliable sources. You've been given fake news. Just Google it and you'll find we hardly import fresh ginger…
Tried doing it from Fiji but that didn't happen.

        • +4

Why is stating facts getting negged? Supabrudda was misinformed and i was just correcting him/her. Fact is ginger from Asian grocers are grown in Australia. He was conned by someone from Vicmarkets.

      • Circle of life!
You do eat fish or meat from the river/land that your shit ended up, don’t you?

Do this Coles and then we're talkin

  • Gingers have souls

  • there's 2 types of ginger: young and aged; it becomes more expensive as it aged.

    • -2

      No it doesn't.

      • from an experienced chef to a newbie, yes there is.

        • You are that experienced you have got it the wrong way around.. I would suggest you do a google search or go for a walk around a genuine produce market.

          • @coin saver: i don't have to; the neg votes proved otherwise.

            • @tempura: Just proves you have 2 accounts or someone else is as ill informed as you.

    • Thats an age not a type. Did you know there's 2 types of chef? Those who give unsolicited opinions about food types, and those who dont.

      • and did you know that they're priced differently?

  • Confirmed $8/kg in store in NSW. Does ginger freeze? We always put it in curries or kefir.

    • you can wrap ginger in like those thick paper tower or newspaper and keep in fridge. If you want to freeze them, make sure they're DRY beforehand.

      • You can also dehydrate it..

    • Yes I freeze ginger all the time, fine to use from frozen since you're gonna cook them anyway. Obviously not as good as fresh but frozen ginger does the job.

    • We peel and cut into about 1 inch pieces, put in sterilised bottles and cover with sherry (apera, I think is the 'new' name for it). Lasts for ages and the sherry is great to cook with when you finish the ginger.

expired both instore and online; back to 25 dollars per kilo

    • +4

I wonder if this was a price error. Price displayed in store and online at the time in NSW was $8/kg (not a yellow coloured special tag). Bought just over 1kg and got charged $28 at the checkout. When I complained to the cashier she said to take it up with the service desk. Went to the service desk and they said the wrong tag must have been displayed. So I got it for free as per store policy!

  • $25 p/kg in NSW
