We went in May this year and it was fantastic. Flew with Qantas (went Jetstar the first couple of times) and it is worth the premium since you don't have to pay for luggage or food.

Kinda want to go again 😁

    • Hoping to go to Tokyo in October (Philippine Airlines). Is it a good season to be there?

      • Yep, autumn is a beautiful time of year to go, autumn leaves and slightly less busy than cherry blossom.

      • in Tokyo and southern parts of japan you wont see autumn colours till the end of October and beginning of november

  • Can you bid to upgrade these seats and if so what would be a good price range to bid for?

    • Unlikely you can upgrade this flight being cheapest economy. Have flown it many times on different carriers in economy, and it's a pretty easy flight plus minimal time difference is great

  • +4

Fyi, Olympics are in Tokyo next year

  • thanks OP going to book it on china airlines via Taipei. $650..

  • Looking to just return from Tokyo to Melbourne in late June. The cheapest price is $855 compared to $613 for both ways. Is there no way to take advantage of these sales for just a single way ticket?

  • Can u choose multi trips but with layover for a few days?

  • +1

Btw travel date is after cherry blossom session :(

    • Eh, there are many pretty places in Japan.

  • Im reading that the rainy season in Tokyo is June? Anyone been during this time? is it really that bad?

    • +1

I went late May to Mid June this year, and towards the end we had 2 or so rainy days. I wouldn't say that it's that bad, but it really puts a damper on going out (specially with suitcases). So I wouldn't go/start after 10/6.

      • yeah i did a bit more research and decided on mid may to the end of may, weather looks warm and should miss most of the rain

    • went in July last year for the whole month, only rained a couple times. just except super humid temperatures

    • rainy season would be OCT-NOV

      • No, rainy season is May through July, https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2277.html . Was there last week for the typhoon. Apart from about 12 hours of wind and rain, clear blue skies. Humid, but still good.

I took Qantas to Tokyo. The food was so yucky. I was wondering how they made them. On the way back, I took Japan airline, the food was much much better.

Prices seem to be going up, lowest i can see now is around $697 return from Melbourne

    • Prices are still $633 from Melbourne. Eg:
      https://iwantthatflight.com.au/flight.ashx?oc=MEL&dc=TYO&dd=…

      • +1

Yeah they are if you book through a 3rd party, which has its risks and is never wise to do if the savings are only small as apposed to booking directly through the airline.

Directly through Qantas is $697ish - which is still a fantastic deal, id rather pay an extra $60 or so for peace of mind. If things go wrong booking through a 3rd party if can be a nightmare, they can overbook, cancel etc. Its always an extra set of T&C's to jump through if things change or are cancelled.

        • +1

Very true, the only one I trust is Webjet and even than its a nervous few minutes till it shows up on my QANTAS account.

          • +1

@emrys1: Trust me on this one, AVOID Webjet !!! We booked a qantas flight to Europe via webjet and they gave us a wrong boarding time in Istanbul. After we missed our flight, webjet gave us a wrong instruction and they didn't really help us for compensation for 3 months, even tho we had to stay one extra night in Istanbul at our own cost. Also their travel insurance is a bullshit. Highly recommend you NOT TO DEAL WITH WEBJET.

            • @Hope140: I usually only go through the airline but this was a multi city flight that wasn't showing up on the QANTAS website, but its all on QANTAS now so all good.

        • +2

Just book it from Qantas directly and claim their best price guarantee policy. Nothing to lose.

I claimed one against bestJET 2 years ago.

          • @CharcoalChicken: Cheers for that - however the one catch is the website has to be Australian with an ABN. The $633 website wasnt australian however the lowest 3rd party website on the list with an ABN was skiddoo.com.au who have the fair listed as $675, as i booked 2 flights i have a potential for a $50 cash back from the claim i just submitted (also a bonus 1000 FF points)

If anyone else wants to submit, its pretty straight forward - https://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/price-promise/global/…

  • Great deal. when does the sale end?

  • May and June weather is gross.. And watch out for their big public holiday

The Melbourne Narita flight might be switched to Haneda in March if they do get awarded the slot, so be careful about booking accommodation around Narita.

      • why would you stay around Narita unless you had to?

        • +1

Some of the Narita accommodation can be very cheap. If you are arriving in the night or departing early, some of the nearby hotels offer a good service with the added amenities of the shuttle bus.

        • Narita Town has restaurants specialising in eel dishes along a lovely main street leading up to the big shrine. Makes a good outing a for a few hours and several of the hotels run free shuttle buses from the hotel to the town and back in addition to their free shuttle from or to the airport. Narita Town has two train stations close to each other to get you on your way or when going home to catch your hotel shuttle to your last night of accommodation. The regular hotel shuttles stop at the train station area. I spent a half-day in Narita town after my morning arrival then stayed at the hotel and a good cathcup sleep in a quiet cheap room before heading into Chiba to meet a friend the next morning, courtesy of the shuttle bus to the Narita Town train stations. You can also of course go back to Narita Airport train sration, depending on where you want to go. I stayed in the Narita Garden hotel which is used by several airlines for their air crews. Including Jetstar.

Gross how? I go every year in May, it's great! Bit of rain, pish posh.

      • Isn't it humid towards end of May /starting of June?

        Rain sucks man :/

        • It's the worst in August/September.

    • +2

you should try August… 40 degrees everyday

      • I've been twice in August. Best time to go imo

  • Oh boy, here I go again.

    • +1

I read that in Krombopulos Michael's voice.

  • Flown with them three times and agree that it’s worth it

Now if only they could have a return flight that wasn’t overnight. Then it would be perfect!

    • It's like a free day though with no accommodation!

      • +1

I'd prefer to be in Tokyo eating copious amounts of tuna nigiri and swishing it back with Sapporos!!!

        • +1

The money you save on a nights hotel = MOAR nigiri and sapporo when you land

    • Yep. I'd rather fly in the day too and not get a crappy night's sleep in the plane. With JAL it is overnight on the way to Tokyo which makes for a bleary-eyed first day. Much prefer JAL service and their better seat spacing over Qantas but the price is a big factor to me as an Ozbargainer. Ideally I'd fly Qantas by day to get there and JAL by day to come back (to Melbourne) but unless they codeshare there won't be a cheap fare for doing that.

I’m there at the moment. Sigh. 2 days till we fly home :(

  • Awesome find thank you!

  • No joy for Perth?

    • ANA flys daily to Perth

  • We are going next week, $1650 return ! I hope it is not to crazy busy with the ruby World Cup on. Did not realised until after I made the booking.

    • It won’t be

    • +2

You should of realised that by the price of the ticket :)

      • Similar price back in Jan. thought it is just school holiday price!!

        • When you booking in advance, always check month before and month after. This will get you some understanding and help to avoid school holidays or major events.
During the busy time, not just flights, you also get stung by hotel room prices as well.

    • YIKES - I'm going in November and I paid $900 return. Guess it's really the time of year

  • Getting $770 directly on Qantas website for Melb - Tokyo. Had to pay $70 for seats. Still a good deal or no?

    • yes

    • Why are you paying for seats? Seat selection isn’t mandatory. Unless you want a premium seat you’ve just shelled out for a standard seat that everyone else will get for free when they allocate seats

      • I'm travelling as a pair, if I don't select seats in advance will they still put us together or random allocation?

        • +1

Yes, they'll put you together. My friend and I never pay to select seats and we've never been split up on multiple trips with Qantas or Jetstar. I've also selected a seat (not paying) while travelling alone but got moved at the airport anyway so that a couple could sit together.

        • +1

They always put you together. Unless you’re extremely, extremely unlucky. It’s almost a guarantee especially on premium airlines like Qantas.

Rule of thumb is never pay for seat selection unless you actually want a specific seat or you want to pay more for a premium seat.

          • @TightTerry: Thanks, haven't booked just yet. Do you know if Qantas allocates seats as soon as I purchase my tickets or are all seats allocated upon check-in opening?

  • Currently in Tokyo. Looks like I’ll need to book again soon.

  • +1

People in Perth feel missed out.

    • Yes, so sad.
Want mid to late April, return May!!!

  • Any deals for late March?
