NBN HFC Drop Outs/Slow Unable to Use Sometimes

Legit on a 100 plan yet we get no where near it, plus it keeps dropping out lately unable to watch streams or anything.
We are using NBN HFC. with a high end gaming router that cost me $400 AUD that does not help at all lol

I thought they were meant to fix the drop outs and faults for HFC? whats going on anyone else having this?

pretty sure its a HFC problem though.

If you search the forums a lot of other MyRepublic customers report having problems with their service and speeds. You should consider moving to another ISP, if possible. Contact the TIO if you have problems getting released from your contract.

@Rukiata: true about forums, but ACCC report puts TPG well ahead of Myrupublkc, and most others to be honest. And price is basically the same, so I wouldn’t hesitate moving if we’re you. See if it helps, but I do agree it’s likely to be HFC issue.

I thought they were meant to fix the drop outs and faults for HFC?

To a point yes. Some HFC issues can affect as little as 3 houses with no way of knowing until it was connected. Then there are other times when it is just your connection that has the issue.

When it drops out does the lights on the NTD go out? flash?

Is there any sort of continuity eg when it rains it's cold/hot that sort of stuff?

If the speeds are bad at 6am then that rules out congestion on the CVC side and frequency. Meaning you have a signal fault. Too much signal or not enough or it's getting interference. Which is why it would be so handy if the end user could check line stats but NBN disabled that. :(

Anyway your going to have to make an report of all the issues for your provider. Drop out at 5:33Pm slow speeds recorded at 6am. So they can escalate it with the NBN.

That's just HFC. I thought I fixed my dropouts but I think they are still happening. I thought it might be some DHCP issue related to the way Vodafone issues ip addresses but I'm not sure because I can't see if the modem is resetting whilst overseas and the person who is looking after the property isn't able to stay there throughout the day.

I basically got it fixed from 20+ dropouts a day, or at least I thought so, then I went overseas as quickly as possible because something urgent came up with a friend. Now I'm regretting not staying longer because it feels like it still drops out randomly a few times a day.

HFC is a wild beast apparently. It's very annoying and susceptible to all kinds of corrosion and interference. What we need to do now is basically keep calling them up and raising a fault to the NBN and make them bill the NBNCo again and again until they fix it. That way if they see lots of faults they will possibly decide to scrap the whole system, because even if this is fixed the corrosion will happen again into the future. At worst we stop them rolling it out to others.

I don't know how many tech visits are required on average to fix HFC faults, but I'm pretty sure it is quite high. Although I think most don't even know what to do, thus the average is probably lower than usual. It's not like the NBNCo proactively goes out to fix the network if the flaps per day exceeds 20 or something.

Worst of all, we cannot login to the arris modem to find out if something is wrong there or the number of times it rebooted or dropped out. I can only see what is on the router side. At least they could put a guest interface or something and disable everything else. You can't even see the signal levels.

Both the ACCC and Choice magazine have schemes where they send you a device that you connect to your router, or between your router and modem, which measures your NBN speed and other metrics. Both schemes send you a report every month.

Why not think about joining one or both schemes to get objective data about your connection problems? It'd also provide obvious "ammunition" to present to your RSP and/or NBN to help to get a better connection.

The best advice I've seen given in all these NBN threads.

    • signed up to top one but its a waiting list.

  • Been getting dropouts on Telstra NBN cable too.

  • Been with myrepublic on HFC NBN100 for just over a week now and been surprisingly impressed with it - 9ms 95down/35up and haven't experienced any drop outs so far

easy way to monitor dropouts is to download Steam and open a chat box.
it'll tell you everytime it drops out and reconnects.

  • I was with Telstra cable for a few years which dropped out I'd say at least once a month, sometimes for over a day. That became NBN HFC which dropped out a few times a week at first, I logged a call with AussieBB it stopped and has dropped out maybe once since then.

  • Yep, got this problem exactly. I've been on NBN HFC since January and have had this issue since 30 mins after installation. In 9 months they still have not been able to fix it. It's unbearable. My connection disconnects about 20x per day (down for 6 mins at a time). Each time the NBN cable modem spontaneously reboots itself.
I've had NBN techs out many times and they have replaced everything at my premises multiple times over but it makes no difference.

The technicians that come out are utterly useless to be honest. They want to leave the minute they arrive. And every time they have come out it doesn't happen to be a time when the connection is down. So they say "it works fine, call again if the problem happens again". I tell them to stay for an hour and they will see it, but they refuse and just leave.

My ISP (iiNet - horrendous customer service) are just as bad. Takes weeks to get them to organise an NBN visit, then takes about 6 weeks all up to get someone to my house (and sometimes they dont turn up and dont notify me they aren't coming). I have been repeating this since January. I even had to buy a separate higher priced mobile plan so i can have lots of extra data to cover all the iiNet NBN outages. And I'm just a house of one person and not a gamer, I can imagine how pi**ed off I'd be if i was a gamer or large movie watcher and i had to live with this.

NBN is an absolute farce. My neighbours in the street have similar experiences, some have gone through every ISP available trying to find one who can help them with their NBN issues, but nope, not one ISP cares and just palms it off as an NBN Co issue. And due to us not being able to call NBN Co directly, we are literally f'ed in this country.

You may see that Telstra offer a device with built in 4G backup with their NBN service. They know the NBN network is completely flawed and can never be fixed in it's current form so had to roll out such a device to offer a somewhat more reliable connection to customers, although as a gamer, when it flips to 4G you'll be fragged and go mental.
