Does anyone know how good/useful the MYER price match policy is these days? (on toys specifically)
It says on their web site they will price match Australian retailers who have a physical store located in Australia and who have the item in stock but how does that go in practice?
How likely am I to get a price match on a toy item where another retailer with a physical store has it cheaper but that physical store is located in Melbourne while I am in Brisbane? (the price would be available to me if I walked into the Melbourne store today and their website claims they have stock and its not a special category of store like a factory outlet or a clearance centre)
Looking here for first hand experience with people who have gotten price matches at MYER (either on toys or generally) and how picky they are when it comes to the location of the store you are trying to price match against.
Is it worth trying this (the risk if I try it and they wont price match is that I have bought discounted MYER GCs from somewhere to reduce the price even further and now I can't use them) or should I wait and hope that either MYER actually discounts it or David Jones actually has stock of the item at the same time as a sale?

depends on the person mostly. some will only price match if the other store is within close/suburb proximity. most will do it without any fuss.
As first commenter said, they always ring up head office to check cost price, and refuse to match if it’s below this.
I’ve found that they’d only match sub $20 Lego sets that’s 20% off at Target/Kmart, but more expensive set that’s also 20% off is a no-go (below cost price for some reason).
There’s a reason their banner says “If you see it cheaper elsewhere, we’d like a chance to match it”, instead of “…, we’ll match it”.TL;DR: they may as well not have a price match policy.
Given how expensive this item is and given that MYER have been explicitly excluding it from all their sales, its probably not worth the risk that I spend the $ on the discount MYER GCs and then am unable to get the price match (leaving me with all that money tied up in MYER GCs)
Although I can't believe that a tiny little retailer in Melbourne with a single location (and an online store) would be able to stay in business selling a product at a price that is below MYER "cost price" (given that MYER probably gets bigger discounts from the supplier than the tiny little retailer).Previous experience with MYER price matching has been hit and miss though, one time they refused to match at the Indooropilly store because there is no Big W in that centre and another time they matched K-Mart at the Carindale store even though there is no K-Mart at Carindale and even though not a single K-Mart store in the state had stock of the item in question but for an item costing hundreds of dollars it might not be worth taking the risk.
Just ask … I recently purchased a kid's toy that Myer had for ~$50 and someone else (BigW maybe) had it for ~$30. The woman on the desk gave me the "I don't think we'll do this", but went off to see the manager without fanfare and came back with no worries on the discount. Easy price match.
What I will probably do is go in store and see what they say. If they say they will price match I can always take the price match and forgo the extra few % of GC discount (or buy the GCs and go back and hope they will agree again to price match)
I had Myer price match a Vitamix for me to match an online store. It can depend on how they are feeling. I got David Jones to price match an exiting model Philips Pasta maker from the Good Guys, which brought it down to half price. If you ask nicely you do have a better chance, but I wouldn’t buy gift cards on the off chance.
David Jones won’t play the this is below cost price card, ever. As long as the store has the same overheads i.e. physical store, in stock, you can prove the price, they’ll price match it.
Source: ex-DJs staff; used to help customers find a better price if it was a slow day/they were nice and happy to put in the legwork as well
The DJs person was great. They didn’t have any at the Bourke St store so they contacted one of their other stores to hold it for me for pickup. I’ve had good experiences with both DJs and Myers. I much prefer B&M stores, you walk out with the goods and you have someone to bitch to if there is an issue. When I order online there is always the concern they won’t provide it or it will be screwed up on the delivery. I always Google around before I buy stuff, so I know what I’m looking for and the prices out there.
I also prefer B&M stores whenever possible simply because I don't have to worry about delivery going missing (most recently the postie accidentally put an Amazon package in the mailbox for unit x number y when I live in unit y number x (the guy who lives in that unit caught the mistake and I got my package plus the postie later apologized for the mistake)
Just picked up the item from MYER Brisbane CBD. No problems getting a price match on the item and decided to jump on it rather than trying my luck and going for that extra few % off with gift cards. Probably the cheapest its possible to get it in brisbane either from physical or online retailers short of DJs restocking the item before their sale finishes (not a risk worth taking given how long DJs has been out of stock on it), hoping someone with stock has a bigger sale (also unlikely) or some crazy special "right place, right time" deal or eBay thing or something.
Managed to get a price match for a thermos. It was relatively easy, just showed them the competitor's website, they checked something on their own system, then it was all ok.
I never had success price matching with Myer but that was mainly with electronic things. What I was always told by staff was that they would price match as long as the price they would be matching with was below their cost price. I don’t believe for a second that Myer floor staff are going to know actual cost price of merch, it would be absolutely nuts if that was the case mainly just because you don’t want lower staff telling all their friends what Myer’s buying abilities are, in my opinion it just wouldn’t happen. What’s more likely I think is that there is just a standard bottom sale amount. If Myer were more direct and just said there is a bottom limit to what they can sell their goods for, so I just generally don’t bother with them anymore because they just never matched, and they wouldn’t even sell at their ‘cost’ price if the competitor was lower, they just wouldn’t sell the item at all. That’s part of the reason why I’ve always felt that Myer is just losing market share, they have a lot of rigid policies, and staff that don’t seem to have the ability to override them to be able to make a sale.
"cost price" isn't necessarily what MYER paid for the goods, it also includes costs for MYER like wages and rent and stuff (i.e. its probably the lowest MYER can sell at and not make a loss on the sale)
never had any joy price matching at myer, even against companies next door such as woolworths. They just bleat 'less than our cost price' and that's it. Myer due to go extinct.
