PICKLE

EDIT 12.30pm 21/9: More have become available for those that missed out the first time

Grab yourself a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF for a little more than a barebones system. Only 16 in stock.

It's probably a 4th generation i3-4130 which benchmarks at 4800 with a low 54W TDP, integrated HD Graphics 4600 and a 22nm lithography. Not top level but perfectly fine for many users esp as system would only be about 5yo. Comes with 4G RAM and a 500G HDD. Win 10 Pro so you can easily disable automatic updates.

Plenty of earlier posts for the Dell 9020 SFF which covers it's strengths and limitations.

An additional 3% discount with code 'PICKLE' (Original Coupon Deal).

ALSO: Some higher spec USFF's but very low quantities.

  • The i3 is quite a letdown but for $86 you can't really complain…

    • +18

Price is cheaper than new pi.

      • That's true, I got a refurb'd Optiplex 990 1tb, 8gb ram, i7 for $200 a few months back. Debating whether I chuck a GPU into that

        • so did I, put in a cheap 1030 card in it and connected to my 4K tv to watch illegal PPV streams :)

          • @FeZZa21: Not sure about the 990, but I thought the integrated graphics in the newer models like 9020 is fine for 4K TV, 24/30Hz.
No, hdmi 2.0, so not 60Hz TV, but that's almost non-existent.
Does your PPV have a codec needing a fancy GPU?

            • @bargaino: my 990 had displayport+hdmi but no sound if I remember correctly. not sure about 9020. my PPV and sports streams are either html5 video or h264 (in VLC) @ 50/60fps

          • @FeZZa21: What is illegal ppv?

            • @jingsu6688: Pay per view streams/events. Typically one person pays and restreams or otherwise gives access to a bunch of freeloaders.

    • +2

Got something like this similar and turned it into a Pfsense box, will beat any of the crap routers out there.

  • I have 3 old these systems and in 1 system some capacitors are bulged and is not starting. So make sure your system has no capacitor damage on motherboard.

    • +3

      Are you sure it's a 9020? They're not that old…

    • Are they the DELL Optiplex range? I have been using this line since the 750 era and their quality n stability is superb. Actually my 750 still works perfectly, boots up in 30s on SSD and my mum use it to surf the web happily.

  • Perfect for a plex box

    • What video card would you add for hardware transcoding? SFF makes it a challenge.

      • +5

        1030 Silent Low Profile

        • +2

For some reason, I thought you only got HVEC hardware decoding at the 1050 and up level. Turns out 1030 does too.

  • +4

Could probably run a Minecraft server off it. Plex might be too demanding with anything over 1080p (unless you optimise the videos)

    • -2

Could probably run a Minecraft server off it.

      Better still, Minesweeper!!!

      • +14

        No.

        • +4

You've obviously never played it multi-player…

  • Would be great as a retro emulation box once you chuck a cheap used gpu into it.

    • Good idea. Onboard should play the classics, though (?)

  • Would this be OK to run Netflix and kayo to a 1080 TV?
Plus a bit of vpn Netflix and the like.

    • +2

      Absolutely

    • +2

With the likes of chromecast/android TV boxes available now I would never consider using a PC to run simple streams

      • +2

They're better suited anyway, official streaming on PC is restricted due to being an "insecure" platform.

      • But a solid one cost as much as a PC 😉

    • Netflix is a bit annoying on a HTPC. The app is very much designed for mouse navigation.

  • Nice one.. thanks op - going to connect to the TV to use for Foxtel Go!

    • Telstra tv ftw

      • +1

I think thats Foxtel Now not Go

  • Can it be used as a dedicated media server? I am happy with 1080P FHD movies (my TV can't go above that, anyway)

    • Ideally you shouldn’t transcode, so you don’t need much grunt to host plex.

      • Agreed.

I'm always fascinated when I read so many people insisting on transcoding. Unless I'm missing something, they're using a clunky fix, instead of grabbing the right content.

  • Would this be able to play HEVC properly?

  • The listing ended.

    • +3

      Sold out.

      Like i said only 16 in stock…

  • Would something like this move the audio/video through HDMI to a TV?
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Displayport-DP-to-HDMI-Cable-Mal…

    • +1

      Yep

      • Maybe, maybe not. I got a HP box at work and I needed to buy an "active" display port to HDMI cable for it to work. I tried one of those you linked and it didnt work

        • Oh….. what did you end up using instead that worked?

          • @ezza: Here's some info on the difference in adapters. Maybe it was something do do with me running dual screens, i'm not sure.

Cant remember where mine came from but it was basically this

            • @Gracey: Ahhh right…possibly
I’m only looking to connect to one TV I’ll go the cheaply one I found and if it doesn’t work I’ll get the more expensive one
Thanks for advice and heads up!

  • Gone already as I wasted time chasing up a power supply converter cable lol. Still, it was for a 'give-away unit', they can have my HP 8300 after the next decent techfast cheapy…

    • +2

      More in stock.

      Love,

      The Phantom

      • Ty - now down to 2 left.

They have a diff one that is an i5 for $20 more….. $109
    Dell Optiplex 990 SFF Desktop PC Intel Core i5 2400/3.1GHz, 4GB 250GB HDD WIN10

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-990-SFF-Desktop-PC…

    • +2

older model so more risk of PSU fail. No USB3. inferior GPU.

    • +1

Yeah i noticed that but as @manic says it's a much older box which raises power supply survivability issues, has a 2nd generation processor (32nm v 22nm) with a benchmark not much higher than the i3 listed, inferior onboard graphics and only USB 2.0 which is a massive PIA.

These USFF's are good value though but there's only 2 left.

      • Good value at double the price?

        • +1

Yes, they are - check the specs and compare with other similar systems on eBay.

          All gone now anyway.

    • Two left - try this:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Core-i7-4770-3-4GHz-Haswel…

I'm thinking of it to make the music and video play faster.

  • I have one of these running as a Sophos Firewall. Just replaced the HDD with a tiny cheap SSD, and put in a dual port Intel NIC, and it works well.

  • Will this fit a low profile 1050 ti?

    • +3

Yes, it will. I have the i7-4790 model of this SFF and put the GTX 1050 ti low profile card in it.

  • I've bought a couple machines from these guys and I'm very happy with their deals. Last one was one of these which runs beautifully with my gtx1060 for a cheap gamer.
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DELL-PRECISION-T3600-Intel-Xeon-…

  • +2

    Ozbargained by Bryan from TechYESCity!

  • +1

I also have a couple of the 9020s, great machines. Put a 1030 low profile fan cooled card in one of them ( the extra thickness passive heat sink only model of this card wont fit ) and put an earlier " high end " low profile card in the other. Great for gaming at low cost. The standard graphics ( on cpu chip ) is quite good too, its 4k. The cpu i5 series in these are quite fast, much faster than earlier i7 / pentiums, from my memory. There's often I5 and I7 unlocked / turbo chips on ebay as well, but sometimes quite expensive. The other thing is that these are quality made machines with lots of attention to detail.Mine looked like new !!!

  • Stupid question, if i want to move the HDD to say a 120Gb SSD would the Windows license come across with it when I install it? Or I need to do something special?

    • +3

Perfectly good question. I've never had a problem doing a fresh install using a new SSD - the digital license detects your motherboard and Bob should be your Uncle. More info here.

      • Excellento!!! i'll def look into this when I receive it… appreciate it.

    • No problem. Go right ahead

  • -2

Even a i5-2400 SFF is better than this.

    • The Phantom says no.

    • No USB 3….

  • Any more units coming?

  • back in stock

  • Back in stock

  • +1

The good news - Mine came with a video card that will support 2 DVi monitors

    The bad news - It's a DMS59 HP 256MB nVidia Quadro NVS 290. A bit of a cad really.

I'll not bother with the benchmark comparison with the GT420 I pulled out of a $5 Acer aspire. That's slower than the on-board, but has HDMI. The unit has two Displayports and Analogue VGA.

The unit is spotless inside and quite presentable assembled, well done Workventures guys.

    • You forgot to mention the awesome packaging - beats the crap out of pedestrian efforts by bneacttrader.

      Quadro NVS 290 v GeForce GT 420.

    • Guess someone really liked their DVI monitor(s)? Can't think of any other reason to put a 2009 card in a box like this.

      • They are from a commercial setting. A small glitch on your Proudspire Manor door isn't going to affect your game-play, but can be a bit annoying when it's a bulkhead joint on an F-15. The NVS 290 is a CAD oriented unit, slow, steady and reliable.
It'd be great for Minesweeper but Quake 2 might be pushing it…

Those looking to put a GTX 1050ti in this may be disappointed if wanting to use the case, as the power brick is on the left hand side [ looking from the front] and the 16X port by it so a double width card won't slot in. On the upside, a PCIe/SATA M.2 adaptor masked out by the video in a SFF 8300 slots in nicely, and booting from that makes it a nippy little office/media/PfSense box.

        • If you were doing that sort of work though I don't think you'd have one of these bulk-order, take-it-apart-without-a-screwdriver office boxes; you'd at least have a (mini)tower and wouldn't have to resort to using a card 5 years older than the rest of the machine. I strongly suspect the i3 would have better floating-point performance than a card that old.

          • @ssquid: Or you may be a small draughting office or SOHO re-using an perfectly adequate card from an earlier HP machine. I've just cleaned up a Gigabyte R6850 which would be pretty sad by today's gaming standard, but apparently still bought and sold by people with a few watts (and room) to spare.

  • A few more available…

  • A few more available…

  • Awesome! Finally found myself a powerful pfsense box! for $86. Can't beat that.

  • A few more available … when it will end nobody knows …

  • what's the condition of these things like? i'm guessing the case is a bit battered

    • A few scratches om my case, not a speck of dust on the fans, fins cards or motherboards and an LG DVD burner from 2012 that also looks like it left the factory yesterday. All ports clean, shiny and working.
There is a slight wrinkle in the prisitne white service tag and the bottom corner of the side label [apparently made in Ireland telling me the unit is Malaysian] is wrinkled. If they had used linen instead of paper…

  • The unit I received turned out to be an Optiplex 990 and not the 9020 as advertised. I'm not that familiar with these units and only picked it up when I found no USB3 ports tonight after going to set it up for a friend. The seller has a current listing for the same item, so be careful.

    • Wow. I'd send it back … and they should pay for it.

      • +1

I should mention that the 990 was an i5, but my friend could not do without USB3.
The seller organised a pick-up of the 990 and sent a 9020 which was received the following day (Sydney to Melbourne).
Amazing service.  The computer works well.

        • +1

Earlier model though, i5 2400 vs 4th gen i3 meant the iGPU would be slower/less capable and no AVX2.

Relisted with a 19" LCD for $1190? Must be a damn good screen to be worth $1100!
