    a portable travel router?!

It's never ever crossed my mind to take one of these things on holiday with me.

used the little GL.inet mango on my last trip and was very useful

Hotel provided limited WiFi vouchers which were limited to one device per use. I connected the router via the wifi portal, and then all of my other devices to the mango router to bypass the limit.

TV had sketchy reception and hardly worked but I was able to use my Chromecast to watch youtube or play local content with a USB stick plugged into the router

Can also set up VPN and other handy things

      • Used the Mango router + Chromecast early this year on a trip to the UK. Connected it to the hotel's ethernet connection (which was connected to the TV) and got unrestricted high-speed WiFi bypassing their portal WiFi.

        • how did you setup the router to access their internet connection?

          • @clandestino: Either they would have a login page or what it sounds like in this case is they simply had no authentication requirements on physical connections, much like the standard home network setup (wifi requires a password and ethernet just works).

          • @clandestino: Easy to connect via the hotel wifi. Just be sure to follow the steps here to handle captive portal (the mandatory redirection to the hotel logon/accept page). I take a Google Home Mini with me and set the device street address to the hotel. Works a treat.

  • has anyone actually used one of these, how's the range of it as a repeater? how does it compare to saya TP link RE850?

Lord, my Mrs has a go at me for the amount of electronics I bring on holidays, better add this to mix. Why not.

One piece of clothing for her = one piece of tech for you.

      It's only fair.

  • Anybody used these GL.inet range as a VPN server, ie left at home so you can connect in to it? I’ve been trying to work out for a while is they are much use, 8-12mbit throughput depending on model from what I can see but would love to hear of any real world use or better options.

    • I use as a OpenVPN client to my OpenVPN server at home, works well

      • Which model?

      • What speeds are you seeing?

    • I use a AR-750 to do exactly this with open vpn and Windscribe…..
