Need a New Screen for My Old Phone

Hi guys,

I have a Samsung galaxy s7 edge. Hoping to try my hand at DIY replacing the screen

It'll be my first time but I don't think it'll be too difficult. The phone isn't worth much, so not overly upset if it doesn't work out.

The screen has a pink line through it, as well as, has multiple cracks throughout the phone.

There appears to be a few different products you can buy, based on eBay search results. I.e. some are just a screen, some come with tools, some come with something else (not sure what, but it must be something of value because it's ~$120 whereas other similar replacement screens are ~$30)

Can someone please suggest (and link) what screen part I would need for Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, cheapest possible price? Currently finding it hard to compare because of the difference in inclusions etc.

The touch screen itself is fine btw. It's purely aesthetically damaged. Also, I'm ok for it to forgo it's waterproof ability.

Thanks!

  • If the screen has a Pink line through it, then the complete LCD has to be replaced rather than the glass which is not worth it.
Don't waste your time spending $200 to fix where you can invest in a new phone.

    Cheers

    • What about the $30 screens?

      They won't fix the issue?

    Aliexpress.
Screen and digitiser kit. Will be around $30. Pretty simple to DIY

  • While I’d encourage anyone to try fixing their phone’s screen, the cost of Samsung screens and the difficulty in opening up (and properly closing up) the phone means the economics often doesn’t add up to do so.

Phone screens are made up of:

    • Glass
    • Digitiser (Touch), normally stuck to the glass as 1 piece.
    • LCD screen, often stuck to the glass/digitiser

Like @vinni9284 says your LCD is also broken so you need to buy the entire screen assembly (what you’re seeing for about $120).

This screen assembly is additionally stuck to the front frame of the phone. You need to literally take the entire phone apart starting at the back to get to this front frame to remove and replace the screen.

If you push ahead consider buying the screen assembly pre-attached to the phone frame to skip this last step of having to glue the new screen to the existing frame.

Remember also that unless you’re really really careful you’ll probably break the rear glass panel taking it apart. You’ll also need good quality double sided tape to fix the back panel on at the end.

Unless you're really keen to try it get a quote from a place at a shopping centre - it will probably be $50 more than the part but they will almost definitely do a better job than you in an hour than you will do in 4

I mostly have owned Xiaomi Redmi Note phones, for them the complete screen/LCD including frame only costs about $30-$40

    • This was brilliant!

      And really helpful!

Thanks so much for the information. I wasn't able to find this sort of stuff online.

Thanks for taking the time out to explain

I won't be proceeding. Not worth it. It's a spare phone anyway. I just thought it'd be a cheap project while I'm bored.

No prob and don’t let me put you off doing it. I find fixing phone screens or any broken electronic stuff as being one of the more satisfying things you can do in this modern age.

It’s just that Samsung screens cost so much. Previously I’ve replaced S3 and S5 screens, S3 was easy as but I broke a replacement screen on the S5 during repair and had to order another and do it all over again – was at that point I switched to Xiaomi.

Xiaomi Redmi Note phones don’t have quite the same build quality as Galaxy range but you can replace the entire phone for less than a Samsung screen repair.

Note: I see now the S7 screen assembly I linked to above is actually to a screen with burn in - not a new one. S7’s initially had a massive issue with the AMOLED screens having burn in, stacks of them were replaced under warranty and their still selling the defective ones 2nd hand!
