Most Comfortable Work Shoes?

Hi All

Have had spinal fusion done and am looking for shoes that I can wear with a suit that also wont kill my back. What are the go to professional but comfortable shoes in Aus for those with back issues?

  • Maybe putting those silicon / memory foam orthotics / insoles into your normal work shoes?

I would suggest you try out the hush puppies brand. The most comfortable range I felt were their airplane comfort series which were soft, bouncy and light. Great for your broke back

    • Agreed, my hush puppy work boots are very comfy. More so than my RM Williams

  • +1

Might also be worth seeing a podiatrist to get some professionally fitted orthotics.

  • thanks for the responses guys

i have considered orthortics, may look into that.

hush puppies used to be okay, the quality has really gone downhill lately

  • Ecco are butt-ugly but comfortable and have good support for my high arches.

  • Also suggest seeing a podiatrist following your surgery for a movement and gait analysis - they will then assess you for orthotics and also recommend appropriate footwear.

  • I used to buy Hush Puppies but like you I think the quality has gone down and using more bonded leather. I bought some Florsheim shoes for my wedding and they have been really comfortable. Not at all cheap as they are full leather ($120 on sale, $180-200 regular), but the ones that have the foam like sole are a lot like Hush Puppies but I feel are more comfortable. I've been waiting for another sale to get some more. Can find usually at Myer and David Jones. Be wary of the sizing if you are buying online though as I have found them to be bigger than the size suggests (that is the shoe appears to be 0.5 or 1.0 sizes larger than comparable shoes, even before stretching [was a 7 in Florsheim but 8 in Hush Puppy]).

Ask your employer to assign you to a desk job.

    • That's just a half measure. Go all the way with a work hammock.

had a few back issues (not nearly as bad as yours) and found that most work shoes made things worse …

highly recommend RM Willaims - Sydney boots … lighter than standard, look professional and a great boot in general (very expensive, but well worth the cost)

    • +1 for RM Williams (wearing my first pair today which are 17 years old). They are expensive but you'll get value over a 10 year period. If you're willing to spend that much though, I'd recommend seeing if you can get orthotics at the same time so you can try them together.

Good luck for your recovery. 15 years ago a cervical fusion gave me my life back.

Rockport Dressports - I've worn my current pair every workday for 2 years and still going strong. Not the coolest looking shoes but they are damn comfy.

      +1 for Rockports

Absolutely! I walk and stand (standing desk) all day in my Rockport Allanders. People literally run marathons in them. The soles come from Adidas.

Hush Puppies are also pretty good, but a distant second.

      • Rockport Allanders are amazing. Look the business, but are light and comfy. Agree with Kranix, hush puppies are a distant second behind Rockport Allanders

  • I used to always wear Nike AF1s, to the point that I was getting sick of the style as I got older but just about everything else felt uncomfortable.
But a couple of years ago I discovered Timberland Sensorflex shoes when looking for something that would help me get through a northern hemisphere winter. It's basically a type of sole they use in a variety of designs, which I happen to find very comfortable.
I got a decent looking pair of waterproof leather shoes (not the usual timberland boots), and later also picked up a couple of fairly smart looking light canvas shoes. Every other canvas shoe I've tried have had thin soles that hurt, but these are now my dailys for work and weekends.

Good thing is that if I later need something a bit dressier for work I can just grab something like these and expect that them to feel not just as comfortable as what I'd wear on weekends, but exactly the same, without switching between different soles. Same if I need a hiking boot or whatever.

  • I think it varies a lot from person to person. I even found with some brands, especially Crocs, there are even variations between individual shoes, even in the same range.
I work 10 hour days and will be on my feet 9-10 of those hours. I used to have Skechers shape-ups for men (not for butt-sculpting reasons). They were, hands down, the most comfortable shoes I've had. Never had any sore feet at all, but unfortunately, I can't find that anymore.
Currently wearing these from Crocs.. https://www.crocsaustralia.com.au/p/crocs-mens-santa-cruz/10…
Not as comfortable, but still no sore feet after a day's work.
I've tried Hush Puppies, Ecco, NB, and Nike, but my feet ache after a couple of hours of standing.
    Good luck!

  • Reebok

  • For my duck feet, hush puppies are the way to go. I don't have any issues with their quality. Usually last a year, this could mainly for to their soft leather.
I usually buy them on sale and stock pile them.

  • In addition to suggestions above, 'walker' shoes can be good and don't look too out of place at least from a distance. E.g. New Balance MX624AB4.

  • Try Brooks Addiction Walkers, black, very comfy, and the only shoe i wear now.

  • Try Doc Martens shoes. I myself have lower back problems and they are great shoes.

  • Hi,
I have knee/foot problems and started wearing the Ecco chelsea boot.
Most of the ecco stuff is ugly AF, but this looks decent enough.
I believe it was on $210 on a 20% sale.

Paired with some superfeet that I put in all my shoes now, it has reduced the pain considerably.

  • Brooks Walkers here. Best you can get.

  • I loved Bared shoes, a bit pricey but worth having absolutely no pain all day everyday. The brand was introduced to me by my podiatrist friend, I believe a podiatrist also owns/designs the shoes. They look great too

  • Skechers are amazing, you just have to find one that you like - and that you consider appropriate for work. I find most of them bulky but you can find models that are more "normal".
I've bought from Amazon but I keep getting emails from Brand House Direct and Catch with good prices.

  • Nothing comes close to a pair of Cole Haans. They fused a Nike sole with a smart, often leather upper..
I have never owned a more comfortable pair of shoes, never mind the fact they happen to be perfectly smart enough for work or functions.

Its hard to find Cole Haans in Australia but Nordstrom ship from the US:
