Aberlour A'bunadh Scotch Whisky 700ml $107.90 @ Dan Murphy's

1060

Long-time lurker, first-time poster…

This is one of my absolute favourite drops, was thrilled to see it's down to $107 as it's usually around the $140 mark. Can't say it's the cheapest I've seen this @ UncleDan but think it's still a pretty good price… Oh, and if you also like it diluted cousin (as it's referred to in our household) 12 Year Old Double Cask is down to $69 as well :)

Cheers, may it keep you warm in these cold nights!!!

This is part of Father's Day deals for 2019.

Cashback via Cash rewards or Shopback (for online purchase with click and collect).

Discounted gift cards through cash rewards (5% off woolies group), possibly through Shopback but unsure.

  • Which batch ?

    • The one that I picked up was 63!

      • someone please tell me the difference between 61 and 63? Will be my first purchase of this sherry butt

        • +1

61 in all likelihood was bottled around 2017 @ 60.08%, 63 on the other had was bottled in 2018 @ 61%… Similarities being both are pretty woody!

          • @babayega: yes 2017 vs 2018…being a virgin, how does one choose?! keep in mind, no previous experience.

hopefully @killbill01 can weigh in too!

            • +4

@IamaCam: I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much, there's no major difference especially if you'll be tasting it for the very first time… Get either one and just enjoy!!!

            • +1

@IamaCam: Really just go for it, doesn't matter which batch it is, it will taste great. I haven't seen it at this price for long time. The last bottle i had finished too quick :(

  • if you want 2 bottles, it's slightly cheaper on Nicks eBay, if you pay with eBay GC at 5% off at AusPost

If you stack it with Cashrewards you can get 7% cashback :)

  • My favorite. highly recommended.

Amazing whisky, my favourite, but be warned that at 60% it is best enjoyed with ice or a little dash of water. This actually brings out the flavour more and stops the alcohol from overpowering the senses.

    • +2

If it's cold outside I like to just add a few drops of water, as I really don't like to dilute it with an ice cube even the smallest one! However, during warmer months it's still the same few dops but I also like to chill the glass with the drink in it over a couple of ice cubes in a wider glass (It looks a bit comical, I've been told)!!!

      • I just keep a glass in the fridge

  • +4

Not to be confused with Aberlour 12, which is also on sale for $69.95 down from $93. Thanks OP.

    • +5

We fondly refer to it as the diluted cousin :)

Is this better with Coke or Coke zero? Asking for a friend…

    • +26

You need to get yourself some better friends :)

      • +3

I had a friend who I introduced to Lagavulin 16. She enjoyed it, but after the first glass had them with coke.

To be fair, it wasn't bad… But still. It hurt to see.

I feel your pain, I don't know how I would have handled it… But can imagine lot visiting the other room to scream into a pillow :)

Had former friends mix martel xo cognac with orange juice. That was in 2008 and Im still livid!

            former

            Fair call.

          • @Pizdets: As a fellow Asian, I am struggling understand why other Asians mix XO and VSOP cognac with Lipton Green tea.

Neither. Goes best with LA Ice

Pepsi Max is the flavor of the month.

its ok, bit pricey for 103. You're paying for the abv % and not the actual effort and time to make it. Its not aged. so is likely more than 3 years but less than 8 years old. You can get it for cheap in other countries with less excise tax. I usually pick it up when i'm abroad on holiday. Less than $60 elsewhere.

    • +3

One of the downsides of living in Australia.

      • +1

agree, all these higher cask strength whiskys are too expensive :(

    • +5

Whisky is about flavor, not age. And the price is a good price for here, OS prices are not really relevant for OZBargainers (unless we can import which we can't at a better price here).

    • Also important to remember that age statement whiskey is not based on average age or oldest, it's based on the youngest blended whiskey. So it could be 90% 12-18 year and 10% younger and they would have to go by the youngest barrels.

As stated above, older =/= better. It's quite common to have younger barrels added to blends to actually improve the overall flavour.

    • This is OzBargain, not how to avoid $43 in taxes by paying $1000 for my plane tickets.

    • But for all the many people who can't " pick it up when i'm(they're) abroad on holiday " this is probably a pretty good price yeah…

    • Where do you see this for less than $60?

      I really like this whisky.

And you're paying for the sherry oak.

And with the abv, it's actually a bottle and a half of whisky comparing to 40%, which makes it equivalent of $72 a bottle, which is great value for a whisky this tasty.

  • the $70 version is good enough IMHO.

    • +1

I respect that, it's a preference thing so no judgement here… But I would rather get the Dalwhinnie 15 over the Aberlour 12 (the $70 ver) IMHO.

      • i've not tried the Dalwhinnie. as long as there is no peat willing to give it a go.

        • No peat :)

        • Yeh,it's good.. but I think I prefer the Aberlour 12.

  • Big fan of the Aberlour 18 here but haven't had the A'bunadh, can you recommend it based on a comparison?

    • I feel the 18 is a bit milder but not as mild as the 12, but if you had the A'bunadh right after the 18… You will in all likely hood flinch a bit :) A bit less woody as well compared to A'bunadh. Again, it's a preference thing but if you enjoy cask strength this is by far one of the best out there and probably the best in this price range.

      • Alright I think you've sold me. My favourite cask strength at home is a Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask and it's a ripper. I'll see how this goes next to it. Cheers!

        • I guess it's good for the economy, that I was able to steer you towards that decision :)

I once got to try the Limeburners cask strength @ their distillery in Albany… It was a few years ago and undoubtedly one of the best cask strengths I've ever had!!!

          • @babayega: I've got the Glenfarclas 105 & the Nadurra Oloros. Any idea how the A'bunadh compares to them?

            • @gcar304: I only ever bought the 105 once and it was a while ago, found it a little bit fruity for my palate also thought it lacked a bit of punch that you tend to associate with a cask strength! But it was a fine whisky, I just don't remember it and I still remember the Limeburner I had had back in 2017 :)

              Never had the Nadurra, sorry!!!

Dan’s fathers day catalogue out and Johnny Green $59 as well which is a good buy 👍

  • Pssst, the 16 is the best Aberlour..

    pass it on

    • +4

The 16 is great, I love it… It's the only other Aberlour that deserves my coin! But with all due respect and IMHO, yada yada it's no A'bunadh.

  • Time to stock up.

  • ~$95 with cashrewards and 5% off egift cards. Great deal.

Very good drop, I always thought it is expensive to pay more than $100 for a bottle of whisky but then I had this one at a friend place last month and had to admit it is one of the best I have ever tasted. Going to pick 1 up on the weekend. Thanks OP

  • thanks, ordered. dad is going to love this for his birthday

  • Does this whisky have a real smoky flavour of it, typical of scotch? I haven't had a scotch that I really enjoyed for this reason. Got a bottle of Johnnie Walker black label as a gift and can't stand it. I much prefer Irish whiskey, especially Bushmills 10 year old malt.
Can anyone persuade me to give this a go?

    • +1

      Smoky/peat ? no.

I find it a somewhat sweet - but not too much. But the high alcohol content can be a little off putting for some if they are not used to it. I try to hold my sip in the mouth for a few seconds before swallowing…I love it !

The 12 Year is also nice - this is better though. Each to their own.

    • +3

This is one of my favorite drops, so you can imagine me being tad biased! However, it's certainly not smoky or peaty… If you are drinking it for the very first time it may feel a bit warm when it goes down, but it's a smooth sensation of a warm pudding :)

If you do end up finding it a bit harsh… There's a possibility, after all, it's cask strength and you are paying for the alcohol!!! Drink it like an "Old Fashioned". i.e. Start with a bigger ice cube (those large rectangle cubes) so you are in better control how much it dilutes while you make your way through the glass. If at first sip you deem it's a bit harsh let it sit for a bit give it a swirl and try again :)

      • Thanks for the feedback, I may give it a go.
I won't be putting ice in it though….that's frowned upon in traditional Irish pubs. Perhaps a small dash of water only.

    • +2

Finally found someone that also hate Johnny Walker Black, horrible stuff, horrible.

    • It's a sherry bomb. Overpowering sherry.

It's a one off dragon, not a session drink.

      • Since when was whisky ever a session drink…. unless your name is Slash?

        • There are some great ones at a good price. Jura superstition remains my fave. Dalmore cigar malt prob too pricy. Nice drinks, not tigers

  • Best price I ever saw this was duty free in Singapore, was pretty much $60aud at the time. Can't believe how pricey they are now!

  • great whisky, love its cask strength yet super smooth.

  • +1

Wow, thanks OP, picked up a bottle of this today… can't believe how sweet and smooth it is. I recommend a small drop of water to bring out the full flavour.
Also, maybe it's the sherry casks, but I get a 'brandy' flavour of it too. Beautiful.

  • Picked up a batch 58 here in Caloundra. Good times….

    • +1

Good one! Mine was 63. Enjoy, I'm sure all batches are good!
