Rental cars with travel insurance cover

Hey hunters
I'm curious about travel insurance with car rental excess coverage.
I have never rented a car overseas.
How does it work? Do you show them your travel insurance when you pick the car up?
Do you still need to give them a credit card?

Do you show them your travel insurance when you pick the car up?

No. It's separate to the rental car company. They don't need to know what travel insurance you have.

If you purchase travel insurance before heading over seas, some providers offer "rental car excess cover" and other various forms of rental car cover.

A common example: Say you rent a car, have a smash and the excess is $1500. You'd pay that excess up front to the rental company, but then you'd make a claim via your travel insurance who would refund the $1500 excess you paid (Assuming you met the T&C of the insurance)

(Assuming you met the T&C of the insurance)

OP, very important you know what conditions your travel insurance has so that you are actually covered. Most common requirements include spending thresholds (you have to spend at least $_____ to get insurance, etc) but there would be others, as well as requirements to make a claim (receipts, what the receipts have to show, etc).

Also some car rental excess cover s up to a certain amount e.g. $1000. So you can still be out of pocket.

  • Legend thanks :)

  • I have seen that they offer $6k in coverage for rental car excess they surely would be enough

    • Yep. If using a credit cards travel insurance, just check if the conditions state you must pay for the rental car on that credit card, and any other terms or conditions that might be relevant. :)

  • Where in the world are you thinking of travelling. If its the US then this type of insurance may well be inadequate.

US car rental insurance (and car insurance in general) works very differently to what we expect.

  • You will still need to pay whatever charges the car rental company stings you with assesses you are liable for and then put in a claim to recover these costs with your travel insurer.

  • The excess reduction / collision damage waiver insurance offered by rental companies and the free excess cover offered by banks does not cover all of the charges that may be levied by the car rental company. See the partial list in my comment in the following discussion:

You should not rely on the cover provided through your credit card. You should get cover from a third party such as www.rentalcover.com that provides $100,000 of cover for whatever the rental company charges you for about $10/day.

I just read the Product Disclosure Statement for my ANZ cover

    https://www.anz.com.au/content/dam/anzcomau/documents/pdf/pr…

and I see that other not covered gotchas are:

    • It only applies to Australian rentals

    • Single vehicle accident

    • Immersion in water

    • Driving on private property

If you are going to rely on cover provided by CC read the PDS so you know what you have to do to activate cover and what is actually covered.

    • I just got a quote from rentalcover.com. They wanted $40 per day!!

      • Where are you renting and for how long?

My Rentalcover.com rates for last year. (Sorry about the formatting. I don't know how to insert non-breaking spaces so I had to use underscores and leading zeros to get things to approximately line up.)

  • Wife went to Canada for 4 weeks. 2 weeks driving. Went with this mob: https://www.rentalcarprotection.com.au

A nice diagram including T&C found here. http://documents.haloinsurance.com/zua/rentalcarprotection_c…

Their underwritters are Zurich Australian Insurance Limited.

    • Be careful, this policy makes no mention of covering damage to another car. In the US this is known as Liability insurance. (it talks about covering the damage to the rental car only)

By law this is required before a car is registered, but the minimum can be very low, so doesnt give you much coverage if you cause the accident.

Other car rental insurance companies mention that you are wise to accept the car rental companies SLI as well as this type of insurance

If you are driving in one of those states you will be offered SLI (also called Accident Liability Insurance/ALI or LIS) by the rental company, which will normally provide between $1,000,000 and $2,000,000 coverage. As a general rule, if SLI if offered by the rental company, we advise you to take it.
