Free Parking Nearest to Sydney CBD + Public Transport?

Hello. I'm going to Sydney next month for a day or 2. Could anyone suggest where I should park closest to city and catch public transport to see the main touristy places around the city?

Thank you

Where are you coming from? Queensland? Easier to fly here rather than drive around an unfamiliar Sydney …

    • Yes

Passing by… But CBD is a pain . Everything else easy

I try to avoid driving around the Sydney CBD as much as possible, but it depends where you're coming from and where you're staying where the most convenient parking would be. There are quite a few dedicated commuter car parks around Greater Sydney:

    https://transportnsw.info/travel-info/ways-to-get-around/driā€¦

That gives you 18hrs free parking per day so long as you use an Opal Card (public transport card) for a trip. Then you tap that card (no charge) to exit the car park.

The OP would have to get there heaps early in order to get a spot there though; I highly doubt there'd be any spots left if they rocked up at say 10 on a weekday morning …

  • Depends on where your accommodation is. I think it is best to stay at a place that is close to a train station and train it into the city.

Driving through the city is a nightmare for a local let alone a tourist with its network of one way streets and the added construction of the trams

    • Yes that's what I want to do…

Where would you recommend decent suburb to stay price wise and then training it

There's some free parking near Redfern Station (10 mins train to CBD), I don't know if I'd leave my car there overnight tho.

    • I live there quite close to Redfern. It's no worse than anywhere else except near the housing commission flats. Apologies for the stereotype, it's not all the residents - just some.

There's free unlimited parking along Wilson St near Carriageworks but it's full anytime between 08.00-21.00. Anywhere either side of the rail around there is full because of universities, new housing, construction work and the remaining industry

Tempe was always good for free parking close to the station but i haven't parked there for ages so it might have changed.

maybe Glebe, rozelle, lilyfield, Nth Leichardt and catch the light rail.

Or Bondi Junction Westfield, pay the parking fee and get the train in.

The Cheap Parking app is good if you have to use a parking station

      • I didn't mean that I wouldn't leave it in Redfern specifically overnight! Just I wouldn't want to leave my car on a Sydney street parking for too long regardless. Redfern is super chill and safe in my experience. :)

        Lucky you living there!

I went there as an experiment and love the convenience and change of lifestyle. Really happy i made the move from further out.

          • @brad1-8tsi: Yep, big fan of living close to the city (wherever you are). Can't put a price on the time you waste commuting rather than living!

            • @[Deactivated]: I was in the CBD when I first moved to the area but then they transferred me to work at Parramatta. It's 45mins door-to-door on the train (which is pretty good and you can catch up on personal emails, etc) but i have other things in my life beyond work so the area is still convenient.

              • @brad1-8tsi: 45 door to door on a train is so much better than 45 in a car, or worse, 1.5 hrs! Shame you got shafted to Parramatta, public service? Annoying move from NSW.

                  @[Deactivated]: Government trading entity

The move of gov't departments to Parra is a good thing as an overall strategy IMO. It's made the commute more equitable for the people I work with.

  • Yeah Refern.. I have heard stories.. any other spots?

    • Backstreets near Leichhardt North tram station

    • if you're coming from the north, there're few parking space near wolstonecraft station, I used to park overnight there but if you arrive during daylight probably have to fight for spot with daily commuter

Parking arrangements around Wollstonecraft Station are changing this month. All the unrestricted parking south of the railway line except right down by Berry island is changing to 2P or 4P parking.

  • Artarmon station area (North Shore). Safe overnight if staying in Sydney (done several times).
