The first link is a switch, not a router.

The second is a router but only 6 ports…..

      • +1

yep gives you more ports in total for similar price

        • Do you know the difference between a switch and a router?

          • +3

@aussietivoman: It doesnt sound like you do by that comment

          • @aussietivoman: This is just a router with 12 ports for $365, same as the one above for $109 with 6 ports. I find it very strange that you would pay that price for a router with a tiny switch built in, no redundancy

            • +1

@asa79: So let me clarify what you are suggesting?

Buy a 6 port router and a 24 port switch - and combine them in your network by running the switch off the router, rather than have 12 port router.

So you are talking additional cost, additional space, and additional power requirements for a start.

              You do get more ports.

              • +1

@aussietivoman: I run a USG 3 port with a Unifi 24 port, and an Unifi 8 port POE, and cisco 8 port (not upgraded yet) and 16 HP switch as well, all running off it.

But if you only have a tiny network and you can justify the cost over the above that gives you more ports in total for like $20-30 more

                • +1

@asa79: Bear in mind the packets per second processing power of a USG (1.4 million+) or EdgeRouter X (1.4 million+) is less than half the packets per second that the ER-12 can process (3.4 million+).

Therefore the ER12 is a substantially more powerful router as far as processing power is concerned.

              • @aussietivoman: Power wise its very small difference

                • +1

@asa79: They dont take a to run, but you need 2 power adaptors connected to 2 power outlets.

Plus you physically have 2 units rather than one.

Not important for most, might be important for some.

Now the LITE switch listing has been removed, whats the alternative.

                  • @aussietivoman: If you after small units these aren't the right unit either

          • +2

@aussietivoman: It sounds like you do. Can you clear up the correct pronunciation of router? Is it rooter?

        • +1

          @asa79

yep gives you more ports in total for similar price

Wow, you have no idea what you're talking about do you?

Do you actually believe the key criteria when purchasing enterprise-grade switches is just "HURRR MOAR PORTS"? We're not talking about power boards here.

As aussietivoman already mentioned, PPS is far more important for any decently-sized organisation as the amount of traffic/concurrent sessions isn't going to be mitigated by having more ports since you will be connecting your fibre NTU to your edge router through one gigabit port. After that would come considerations such as security/NAT features, frequency of OS updates and likely 10GbE compatibility for future-proofing.

The ER-12 is a far better edge router than the ER-X-SFP you've linked.

            • @aussietivoman: I was chuckling reading through that guy's train of thought, it's as if he believes most enterprise environments are laid out exactly like his home network, where each device/client is physically connected directly into the router, so you just gotta have a whole heap of ports on that bad boy for all +300 computers in your office and you're set!

I've never even seen any environment where all available ports on an edge router ports were in use.

      • +4

I think he mean for $397 you get 28 ports (24+6-2 for link). An extra 18 ports for $34

    • 24 Port Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch LITE Managed Gigabit Switch with SFP ES-24-LITE for $288.15 is no more, and 6 Port Ubiquiti EdgeRouter ER-X-SFP PoE Gigabit Ethernet Router for $109.00 is now $125.13 with PICKLE.

      • PANTHER Code for eBay plus 15% off at computer Alliance

        • This ER-12 deal does not require eBay Plus.

      • Yeah interesting the EdgeSwitch LITE was up when ASA79 mentioned it, but now its been deleted….
