  • I can't be bothered uploading my electricity bill details but I recently noticed I'm not getting 14.2 cents per K/W for solar power. It used to be 16.3
Is there anyone that does it better?

I'm with AGL in South Australia.

  • If you are using 900 kW you must have your own substation…

units for energy are kWh, not kW

    • urgh… dont read my comment…. :S

I'm spending a ridiculous amount on electricity.

Normally 2 of us, both working full time, but now there's 3.

Need to do something about that… cant believe its so high….

Comments: Have Gas for cooking and Hot water (The gas came to $380 this month, after discount!)

I'm a bit of a tech nerd. I have the following running 24/7

    1. My FTTH ONT
    2. Mikrotik Router
    3. 24 Port Gigabit Switch
    4. Netgear Nighthawk WiFi Router
    5. Ruckus R500 WiFi Router
    6. A small Windows 10 Machine (350w PSU) running in th garage as a server (no monitor).
    7. A NAS
    8. My Main Gaming Rig (doesnt get turned off, 1200W PSU) monitors get switched off when not in use).
    9. Wifes office PC (doesnt get turned off)
    10. 3D Printer (running about 30-60% of the time depending what im doing) to be fair bills were pretty similar before i got the 3D Printer
    11. Periodic use of 2 arcades (they get switched off when not in use)
    12. Freezer
    13. Fridge with freezer
    14. another pc that gets turned off when not in use.

I've been thinking about investing in a solar 6.6kw setup with 5kw inverter… what would i realistically expect to save each month?

$350 per month is too much, solar definitely help. You've got to figure out what's your baseload is before coming to the saving number but if you can manage to get vic rebate, a $6000 6.6kw solar system probably give you returns in 3 years or less. networking an pc gears doesn't use much power in idling state, a router typically 15-30w, same as nas, pc about 50-70w with 24" screen on (without running graphic card, screen off probably around 30w), even your gaming rig with 1200w psu if not doing gaming probably won't use more than 100w)
freezer probably 0.5kwh daily, frigde 1-1.5kw. Not sure about those 3D printer but even in most case your gear probably don't use more than half of your daily. You probably forgot to mention how you keep your house warm tho, any heater?

      • theaters on gas…. don't get me started on that… just got bill for 389 for 3 months… I normally average about 70-120. damn winter…

        • Maybe grab an energy/power monitor plug or Kogan smart plug to check how much power each appliance is using. My guess would be that the three PC's account for over a third of your bill. Replacing the wife's office PC with a laptop will greatly save on power.

          • @skid: I didnt know PC use a lot of electricity?

Overall pretty happy with my deal however wouldn't mind reducing daily connection cost and increasing feed in rebate.

Comments – OK…..but wish I could break even during winter. Supply charge $1.24 per day.

  • Why?

  • What is the highest use of electricity?

Is it a PC, or the fridge , or laptop ?

I guess im thinking a Aircon or heater would be first ?

    • +1

My PC has an AMD GPU (power hungry). PC + Monitor Idle = 150W Gaming = 400W
      332L LG Top Mount Fridge = 30W
      Laptop (Intel Core 8th Gen) = 20W

      Kettle = 2400W
      Iron = 2400W
      Fan Heater = 2400W

But you don't have those on 24hrs.

  • A kettle uses a lot of electricity?
