Kogan SmarterHome Smart Plug with Energy Meter - Pack of 4 $69 Delivered @ Kogan

70

Smart plug that has energy monitoring. This plug has Tuya firmware by default. It can be flashed easily OTA (without soldering) to Sonoff-Tasmota firmware which allows it to work locally without going to the cloud. Once flashed, it integrates easily with HomeAssistant and retains the energy monitoring feature.

The plug is physically bulky. It won't fit side by side with another plug.

  • The question is does flashing it away from the manufacturer default firmware (Tuya) then void the warranty?. Would that not be classed as a user product modification. I thought that it's a legit question.

    • It definitely would void the warranty. You could flash the original firmware back too.

        What if say it won't allow the original firmware to be flashed back on. Or the product becomes faulty but still has the non factory third party firmware on it. You've then lost the warranty if the manufacturer finds it.

          It's a $17.25 device. Would you really bother invoking the warranty?

  • I’ve just received mine at $75 and start using them. kinda wanna return and reorder at this price..

    • +2

      Just to save $6. Gee what is with some people. It would cost you more in delivery to return it.

  • Am I missing something here?

    Why not the ARLEC $20 one from Bunnings? https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-energy-cost-electrical-met…

    Does this one do pretty graphs? Would that really be necessary for one power outlet?

    • +1

      The Kogan one connects to your phone or home automation setup over wifi and does the pretty graphs. You can also make the plug react based on the energy monitoring read-out (set alarms or switch on/off based on the energy reading).

      • Can it send a notification based on energy reading. Want something to send notification when washing is done (without having to use homeassistant)

        • It depends on the type of notification but you could probably achieve what you are after using esphome and some lambda code.

          • @seanw18: Looking for an out of box seem less solution.

            Don't have time to stuff around with trying to code stuff.

    • +2

      This one is cheaper? $69 / 4 = $17.25 each.

  • Any practical example by having energy monitoring feature?

    • I don't use these ones, but I have other plugs monitoring usage of washing machine and dryer, sending alerts via Home Assistant when they're done.

    • I use one to turn off the laptop power adapter once the laptop reaches full charge. The switch is in an inconvenient place behind a set of drawers.

      • How does this Kogan SmarterHome Smart Plug know when your laptop is fully charged?

        • +1

          The consumption drops from 65W to 40W when the battery is full.

      • I have recently bought Kogan smarter home plug with energy meter but they don't have the action based on the load. Only has timer and schedule. What am I missing?

        • I use with the TuyaSmart app, it's got usage stats

    • +1

      To know when not often used fridge/freezer in garage dies and alert you to impending food spoilage?

  • Can you just connect these straight to google home? Im not big on wifi devices just got some yeelights. Just want a simple central app to control/schefule without stuffing around much when i get more devices.

  • +2

    How does this compare to TP-Link HS110?

  • +1

    Does anyone know which Tasmota device this should be set to?

    • +1

      Set it to Generic (18)
      GPIO0 = Button1 (17)
      GPIO4 = HLW8012 CF (133)
      GPIO5 = HLWBL CF1 (132)
      GPIO12 = HLWBL SELi (131)
      GPIO13 = Relay2i (30)
      GPIO14 = Relay1 (21)

  • 2000W or 2400W?

    • 2400W

  • These arrived today for me- took about 30 minutes to use tuya-convert to flash esp home. Pretty happy! Am using one for the heated towel rail - it now turns on at 5:30am if somebody's home and off an hour after the bathroom lights go out, or when nobody is home.
