How is the rort of private health ever a deal?

    • You would rather pay the levy?

      • Most ppl don’t earn enuf to pay the extra levy so meh

I'd rather give money to Medicare and subside an important social service than these guys.

Lifetime loading means u are forced to get pvt

          • @mlburnian: How.. the way I see it.. unless I am missing something.. the longer u don’t get it.. the more expensive (loading) and eventually unaffordable it because meaning you stay on public system. When they introduced this loading it was meant to reward those that took up private Health insurance but by the same token and disadvantaging those that don’t over time makes it less and less attractive option so it in affect creates a division between those that have it and those that don’t and the barriers to enable ppl to switch later in life a harder choice. This is likely causing the industry to wain and why the cost of having insurance just keeps increasing and those that are on it are getting shafted for proping it up

            • @Gavman: Because income increases with time, especially those in twenties and early thirties, even if you are currently under the 90k single or 180k family threshold.
My comments were aimed at those with professional full time jobs, where 90k is easily surpassed

              • -1

@mlburnian: Cool let me know when my income will increase. Been a few years ay. These threshold will also increase too when that finally happens.

Plus aiming ur comments here on ozbargain I doubt U’ll find too many single income ppl on 100+k salaries looking for tedious bargains but I could be wrong..

  • Not good enough - I demand 6 weeks free + $300 cash back…

  • Are waiting periods waived?

    • I think they waiver 2&6month if u get combined cover.

  • AHM isn't very good. Private health insurance in general is worse than just saving the premiums yourself. For most people, it's only good as a forced savings towards health if they're a bad saver. The bad thing is the return you get in the saving is usually negative.

Can’t argue with u there. Unless ur a FOMO tragic, paranoid about being treated in a public hospital or on a really high salary to save some tax can’t really why anyone would bother with it but each to their own.

      • Very true. the medicare levy surcharge does make it worth it to have a cheap junk hospital-only cover but otherwise it's not worth it. Even the risk of incurring LHC loading later on doesn't make it worth it.

        • Extras can be worth it as even the cheapest extra gives no gap dental.

          • @mlburnian: You're right in that it is worth it for some people. You'd have to check how much you pay for the extras and how much you get back but for the majority of people, they don't get their money's worth.

I hope you don't take this as me being antagonistic. It's just that for most people, it's not worth it.

These companies make billions in profits every year and from what I understand, extras makes them the best profit margins.

Some of it is a false economy like how people tell me it's worth it because they get glasses every year but would they have gotten glasses every year if not for the insurance? If no, then it wasn't really worth it.

Once again, your mileage may vary so as with anything, it's best to work it out for your individual circumstance.

@Hogg: Agree, ozbargainers are savvy. I'm sure they can easily do the numbers to work out if hospital and extras cover is worth it.
I know that I was definitely saving money by having a very basic hospital and extras cover to MLS
