Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Note 10+, Note 10+ 5G - Discussion

I just wanted to start a discussion mainly for where you think is the best place to get the new Note 10 (in my case I'm more after the 10+ or 10+ 5G). I'm currently with Optus and my 2 year contract with the Note 8 is about to finish and I'm after the best price. I'm mainly leaning towards getting it on a plan, but if there is a truly good outright price I will consider that too.

At the moment it seems that the Woolworths mobile deal is the best, Galaxy Note10+ which is 104.50 a month for 40gb, 24 months, extra 10gb every three months, and you can data bank unused data. Also they seem to have an extra 180 credit split over the life of the plan, so it seems actually that this will go down to 97 a month? If I read that correctly? (180 / 24 = 7.5, 104.50 less 7.5 = 97). Add cashrewards for signing up to a new plan as well (seems shopback doesn't do as much as CR)

I was going to see what Optus could offer me in getting close to this deal first as some loyalty bonus - I will report back. I am eyeing Telstra also in that they offer the free upgrade from 10+ to 10+ 5G, although I don't know that I really need the 5G right now - feedback would be appreciated.

Also while this is forum topic for fans of the Note (such as myself, coz of the stylus), these exorbitant prices are beginning to put me off a little, so I guess constructive discussion as to why you recommend a different phone are welcome.

    Can someone please confirm if there's a Note 9 5g version?

    • +4

      I can confirm, that there is not. Unless Strange Parts makes one :P

    I am in the same boat, I can't decide whether to get the Note 10+ with Optus or get the Note 10+ 5G with Telstra. Although I do not make international calls, however, no international calls is a turn off with Telstra.

    • You know I'm with optus because of the international calls - but just found out that now the new international call package doesn't include the Philippines so there's no more point in my staying with them - might be best to just use messaging apps for me to make calls. I thought it was a must for me but since no one is offering packages for calls to the phils and the US anymore then it kind of doesn't matter who I'm with. Is there a reason why you're not considering WW mobile?

      • The reason I am not considering Woolworths is because Woolworths is on the Telstra wholesale network, therefore, they do not have access to the full telstra network.

  • +1

    Same situation. I think I'll likely go Telstra 5g handset on a non 5g plan (Telstra offer a trial period for some plans, fully included in other plans).

    • I'm also torn about being 'future-proof' by getting the 5G model - but the most comparable plan I can see is the 60GB and that comes out to 130.79 per month over 24 months. WW mobile after 24 months comes out to 2328 for a 10+, while this Telstra one comes out to 3138.96. So basically $810 more for 5G and 20 more gb per month. I'm just wondering if I'll really require the 5G now, or should take the lesser amount and then in two years time upgrade to a 5G model phone.

      also any reason why you're not considering WW mobile since they're on the telstra network?

  • Well a XS Max 256gb is 2k so why wouldn't Samsung make the Note 10 plus the same.
    More prices here.

    Also Samsung have 24 months interest free if you have any of the GE cards.

  • Anyone on Optus have experience in buying Samsung phones via retail outlet, and using WiFi calling on Optus?

    Is this an Optus ROM specific feature, or will it set itself up on a stock ROM?

    edit: also, will 5G work on Optus when it becomes available on existing sim, or does it require a new SIM?

    • For those who also have the same question, after much searching, it appears it should work on the same sim…

  • -1

    -I've checked out the new Note10 and it is hands-down a notable downgrade compared to the Note9 and S10+. There's really no reason for its existence.
    -The Note10+5G makes no sense to buy, since the phone will be bad for 5G. People should wait until around 2022 to upgrade. Unless they decide to use their 5G connection to get rid of NBN, and if so, you still have to wait for proper 5G rollout and then buy a better device.
    -The Note10+ makes little sense to get. It's barely an improvement over the Note9, but all the improvements require the larger size (almost absurd) and they come at the expense of the Headphone Jack… forcing you to waste extra money on Wireless Headphones, which waste more power, are bulkier to carry, and an extra nuisance to charge. I can't say its a better device than the S10-5G, it might be worse. If you're looking to spend absurd money on a device, there is the Galaxy Fold instead. Heck, I never considered Huawei phones because they were always over-priced, fragile, and lacked features… but now there's no reason to choose a Samsung Flagship over a Huawei Flagship (since it's obvious now that the S11 will also drop support for Headphone Jack and microSD).

    In fact, I will say the best phone Samsung makes is the vanilla S10 Plus. It is arguably better, it comes at half the price, and there is probably more support for it from the modding community. Hopefully, LG and ASUS gets their stuff sorted out and they become profitable/successful if we vote with our wallets. Spurring the likes of Samsung, Sony, Huawei to sack their managers and change their business model, to become more competitive and pro-consumer. There's no hope for Apple and Google on this front though. I still remember the "Greatest Generation" which was the Sony Z3c, LG G5, and the Samsung Note4. These either had a Removable Battery and/or IP68 waterproofing, in addition to the best hardware, and actual useful practical engineering. Maybe I'm just a little bitter that the Razer Phone 2 didn't have a Headphone Jack, or the ASUS RoG Phone 2 didn't have IP68 waterproofing.

    • I was led to believe the Note 10 supported MicroSD? Is this incorrect?

      • +2

        It is incorrect.
        The Note10 Plus has a microSD slot, the Pure/Standard version does not. The microSD is very useful if you want to carry around your Music library and Movies, and even more useful if you want to take a lot of Hi-Res Photos or long video recording and Slow-mo. Or if youre willing, its quite useful to store emulator roms, since anything beyond a PS1, DreamCast, PSP, GameCube, Wii tend to take up a lot of space.

        For people thinking about either the Note10 or Note10 Plus, I would strongly urge you to reconsider the Samsung S10+ instead. In my opinion, it is the better phone and its roughly half-price.

        • Hi Kangal, do you know if the microSD slot also work with a 2nd SIM, ie. the Note 10+ is dual sim model?

          • +1

            @Findmebargain: I believe you cannot. It is hybrid. So you must choose between either your Second SIM or the microSD slot.

            • +1

              @Kangal: Thanks Kangal, so it’s like the Note 9 dual sim model.

            • @Kangal: technically true but many samy phones with dual sim have been known to allow all 3 cards to be used at once. check xda forums 'dual sim sd card' searches, the trick is to carefully slice the sim card thin enough to attach on to the 2nd sd card, order another sim and try again if required, its free to try.

        • I need to upgrade from the Note 8. Actually i broke my note 8 and am currently using a $300 huawaei phone so am hoping to update when my plan ends in October. Wondering would you recommend the Note 9 or the S10 plus? I do like to keep the SD card slot and i like taking photos. The Huawei is cool and all and is getting me by for now but the photos just dont stack up.

          • +1

            @astrotrain: If you can't wait until March next year, then yes upgrade now.

            If you do not require "root access" (or custom roms) then yes, I recommend them.

            While the S8 Plus isn't a bad phone even today for $500. The S9 Plus can also be had for around $550 which is a better deal. Getting the Note9 for around $700 should be possible now/soon with price drops and discounts. I would also recommend the LG V50 for $700 but that's not going to happen. However getting the Samsung S10 Plus for $900 is acceptable.

            If these sound too expensive, I have a list of recent bargains here.

            I don't recommend Huawei unless it's cheapish. Unfortunately there's no Razer Phone 3 coming this year. While the ASUS RoG Phone 2 is not recommended because its too large, lacks waterproofing, and costs $1,500. Meanwhile both the Pixel 4XL and iPhone 11 are letdowns like the Note10.

            So yes, the few options stated above are your best options to get this year. If you can wait, hold-off for next years' devices with +7nm, Cortex A77, Improved Cameras, Improved Gesture Software, 21:9 screens, and in-display Selfie/notchless designs.

            • @Kangal: cheers @kangal much appreciated. Actually forgot to ask what are your thoughts on the A70 and A80? Im probably going to just pick up on a plan but if a bargain should pop up would definitely jump at it.

              • +1

                @astrotrain: There's a few ways to look at phones:
                A) Based on their RRP, and their performance now.
                B) Based on Market Price, and how they compare to previous phones, and how it will hold up in the future.

                I think Samsung has released the A70 (A50, A30, etc etc) for Australia, but not officially released the Galaxy A80 yet. So we need to keep that in mind.

                A) Based on RRP, the A70 is an okay device compared to other devices. It's also around $650 RRP compared to $990 RRP of most competitors. However, I think the A80 (if released locally) would probably be priced around $800 RRP, which actually makes it less of a value.

                B) Based on their Market Prices, the A70 could be had for $500 and the A80 for around $700. That's noticeably better than their RRP. And when thinking about how they will hold up in the future, it looks a little bleak. Samsung does a poor job of updating their flagship phones, and even poorer job of updating their cheaper A-series phones. Plus, these devices are not waterproof yet they have the handicap of a sealed battery. And their cameras and processors aren't that great, meaning the device will age faster. Then you realise there are ex-flagship phones competing against these A70 and A80 phones, and they become harder to recommend.

                If it was my money, I wouldn't get the A70 and definitely wouldn't consider the A80. Having looked at contracts, yeah, nah. Instead I would probably get a cheaper Monthly Plan (No Contract) which is suitable for me, and buy a phone separately. These days, you don't really get any discounts on the phone from the carrier anymore. And if I was looking at the A70 prices or A80 devices, for those prices, I would instead get something else.
                Eg:
                $550 Samsung S9 Plus + $19.90/month x24 (Jeenee 15GB Pennywise) = $1,030.
                or
                $900 Samsung S10 Plus + $30/month x26 (Boost 35GB Unlimited) = $1,680.
                …compared to:
                Contract Samsung A70 with Woolworths 12GB Plan= $1,370.
                Contract Samsung S10+ with Optus 60GB Plan = $2,520.
                …savings of:
                $400 - $800, over 24 months!

                • @Kangal: Thanks once again for your thorough answer. Food for thought for sure. Just caught up with a mate tonight and she had the note 9 and was blown away with the image quality especially in low light compared to my huawei. Now its got me thinking even more!

  • +1

    I ordered and cancelled after getting to know the stuff they have cancelled. They have taken out the iris scanner which was really useful especially when your hands are wet. Then, they've also taken out the notification light which sucks because now you either have to turn on always on display or keep turning the display on to check if you have missed calls or messages. They've taken out other things such as the heart rate sensor too.
    Also since 5G isnt built into the processor, rather a separate network card, it is likely to use up more juice.

  • The Note was once such a standard-bearer. Quite lame that 5G and esim still are not together, or so went a rumor no insider had been prepared to quash. You get a bunch of incrementalism combined with some 3D printer app which now cap off a "significant 10th" anniversary. Limited to android R-11/2020. Internal DAC gets bypassed by an adapter, list goes on.

    While Samsung may get by with best panel out there though, I spose it now goes to challengers to stack the desirable drawcard feature set.

  • 6.8 inch is nearly tablet size its getting ridiclious. 6.4 inch would be the biggest device I would purchase.

    • Its physical size is silimilar to Note 9/Note 8

    • Size of the screen is irrelevant these days since the bezels are being removed. I measured the dummy model at the Samsung stand compared to my Note 8 and it is slightly wider overall, but is very much full screen outside of the camera hole with almost no bezels and it is thinner in depth.

  • In terms of plan vs outright purchase: Find someone that's part of Samsung EPP because we get 50% off all note 10 models on outright purchase. Voda and Telstra employees have access, can't say for any other partners.

    • can you hook me up :P

      • Wait till next weekend, all telstra/vodafone emp going to dump brand new sealed notes on gumtree

    • my voda friend only show me $350 off the rrp, how can they get 50% off?

      • Complete specific Samsung+ Training Modules and a 50% voucher gets sent via email. Was the same for s10.

  • https://www.officeworks.com.au/campaigns/samsung?cm_sp=perso…

    Anyone know if i can bring down the price from this officework deal with a giftcard or something?

  • anyone have any idea if we can move from the telstra $65 jb hifi plans to month to month? would be a good deal with the note 10+ if so

    • It really depends on your luck, but seems to be more difficult now as more people have done it and more Telstra rep already aware of people abusing it. If you are after Note10+, its still a good deal with JB plan nevertheless, the worst case is that you can't move it to m2m then pay the $390 ETC so you get brand new local stock for $1399 + pre order gifts.

  • Has anyone had experience with preordering phones from Amazon AU? They weren't offering the release day delivery that they sometimes do and I was wondering how previous orders have fared for people. Obviously it's all pretty anecdotal, but nevertheless I am still interesting in hearing the tales.

    • You might wait for several days more. You get:

      If the release price goes lower than your ordering price, you only pay the lower price;

      If the price is lower somewhere else, you can even ask for a credit into your account for the price difference;

      Your card only get charged when the order shipped, not when you place the order;

      You can cancel or change the order at anytime before the order has been shipped;

      You get 4.5% cashback from ShopBack I think, instead of 2.5% from for example TGG;

      The headset is in your order, in your invoice, so you definitely will get it, no dramas of 'while stock last';

      Better customer support;

      The estimated delivery date is usually the latest, you might get it earlier.

      But TGG's deal tonight beat Amazon's 1599:

      1699 10% off, $100 gift card, some people get $80 store credit via email invitation.
      So you are looking at 1349~1429 at TGG, with the headset, plus 2.5% cashback from shopback.
      If you have the TGG's paid vip service, you also get 3 months price protection, other than your credit card's price protection I think.

  • Can anyone confirm if Australian note 10 plus come with screen protector applied and clear case in the box?

    • +1

      Yes, it does have a screen protector applied, which is made to support the under display fingerprint reader. But this protector is not temper glass, and I don't think there is a temper glass protector for it on the market yet.

      It does come with a good clear case in the box. I forgot this and bought a ringke clear case on eBay …

      Adding the case on it, the total weight goes to 227 grams, it does feel like a $1700 phone now

  • This 2019 $1700 flag ship phone (4G model), does not support the 4G+ / LTE Advanced ?

    Tests show its downward link is only 63% of my two year old Oneplus 5 …

    I guess the 4G+ LTE Advanced is too fast for the new born 5G beta?

  • Anyone tried the wifi6 802.11ax on the 10+?

    Also any ideas who would want to swap a Hybrid device for the Telstra version?
