New Wall Outlet for NBN HFC - Aussie Broadband

UPDATE: NBN guy found out the existing lead in from outside. But managed to persuade him to install a new lead in on the 1st floor. All good. Cheers!

Anyone has any luck on insisting new nbn hfc wall outlet instead of reusing the telstra foxtel outlet?

1st email from ABB mentioned that i can ask nbn tech to install outlet at any location of house (probably just generic email)

3rd email from ABB says nbn tech will install ntd at existing telstra foxtel outlet

Phone up ABB, they say nbn tech will only install ntd at existing telstra foxtel outlet and that i need to hire electrician myself to relocate or pull new outlet line-in if i wished to. Is that true ?

I know I've read quite a few posts here/whirlpool on nbn hfc that they successfully had nbn tech to pull new line-in for a new wall outlet at a new location for free.

The current telstra foxtel is at ground floor garage and would like the new nbn port on 1st floor living area while prefer not to use powerline adapter.

What's the go from here? Will ABB rep from here able to reconfirm above or assist further? Thanks.

I know I've read quite a few posts here/whirlpool on nbn hfc that they successfully had nbn tech to pull new line-in for a new wall outlet at a new location for free.

Then you must also know that you've read quite a few posts where the NBN tech will not do anything other than the easiest thing possible.

If your job takes longer than has been allocated to it, the NBN installer will lose money on the job, and will probably have to not install someone else's NBN later in the day.

    • You mean contractor spending 2 minutes to connect ntd to existing outlet and bill nbnco $500 or whatever?

      • What I mean is what I said. If all the installer has to do is spend two minutes plugging the new equipment into an existing outlet, then that's what the installer will want to do.

You could try asking the installer nicely what it would take to get him to move the outlet. Perhaps you could even offer to help him do it. Otherwise, the only option is for you to get someone else to do it.

      • bill nbnco $500 or whatever

The installer will get nothing like that for the job. Maybe a tenth of that.

If the job will take longer than has been allocated, the installer will usually just elect not to do the job at all and another installation will need to be arranged.

    • correct… op MIGHT get lucky and NBN tech will install somewhere else, but usually it's the quickest and easiest install for them

    • My friend is a sub contractor for the nbn and he shows me how many sites he needs to attend each day. I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to do this especially if he isn't comped.

      • Subbies are allocated x activations a day and are paid a small amount for each completed activation. Finishing each activation quickly as possible may mean that all customers gets their internet on their day.

Or you could just pull out the foxtel cable..

    • you mean pull out the foxtel outlet and blank it off with sheet over, pretending there isn't one to begin with ?

Something like that. I ripped mine out long before I had NBN HFC installed. Their records showed that I had the connection but there was nothing there so had to install a new one.

        • Thanks for the brilliant idea.

@dcep: You also risk the contractor walking off the job and telling you to go get one installed before he continues on with his work.

I promise you that. Try cutting it off and telling me there isn't one there.

Ill tell you to get a comms tech or electrician to install one and walk out the door.

            • @the hammer88: Thanks. Will let you know the outcome soon.

See if he walks out the door or install a new outlet.

Start by offering him/her tea and biccies (chocolate, of course). The nicely ask him to run the cable on the outside of the house to the first floor. If he says 'no', withdraw the biccies.

Offer bikies instead. Insist if he says no.

  • Yes, but I only wanted mine moved a few metres away and it took convincing.

I was thinking the same thing. My HFC connection will be done next month. I disconnected my old Optus TV coaxial cable from the wall outlet many years ago when I dumped Optus, and connected a free to air aerial cable to the wall outlet, which is still connected to the TV today. Anyway, I contacted my ISP to ask, and they said that according to their records the NBN technician is to install a new wall outlet. So I'm assuming he won't make a fuss when I tell him to put it right beside the old wall outlet. I don't envy the filthy job he'll have crawling 20 metres on his belly each way under the house to lay the cable.

  • Locating the outlet from the ground floor to the first floor requires a lot of drilling. Do you really want them to turn you wall to Swiss cheese?

    • nah, sounds like newbie job, even with those swiss chees hole a $20 plaster tub and $30 paint can can fix everything, easy as cake

  • Phone up ABB, they say nbn tech will only install ntd at existing telstra foxtel outlet and that i need to hire electrician myself to relocate or pull new outlet line-in if i wished to. Is that true ?

Same thing happened to me. That's what they told me. I was frantically looking for electrician to go out in the country. Magically the week after, a van with random tradies popped up, they said they're here for NBN to fix the issues. Best blokes ever.

  • New Foxtel installations now feeding in through Satellite dish

  • I have a similar situation, previous owners had Foxtel, we haven't subscribed, want NBN outlet in study rather than living room. I've found that the actual cable has been cut under our house, which is weird, so hopefully they won't mind putting a new outlet elsewhere.

And hopefully they won't do as hinted above, and think that I cut it!

  • I would try asking nicely. Telling them that you were advised that you were going to get a new line as the existing one isn't working. disconnect that one somehow. If your first of the task list you may have a better chance. If its his last job for the day he will just want to get it done to go home. Offer a coffee of drink. These guys are getting paid little to do these jobs and now trying to get them all done in time.

Also if you want it up stairs be aware they will want to get it there as easily as possible. Conduit stuck on wall snaking around is highly likely.
