Handyman Tool Kit - 126 Pieces $35.40 (Was $94.49) @ Supercheap Auto

1880

Hi,

Looks like a pretty comprehensive set of tools for a good price. A nice kit for someone looking to have a go-to set under the sink or in the garage.

Includes full-size and precision screwdrivers, ratcheting driver holder with bits, wire stripper, pliers (needlenose, locking, tongue and groove etc.), hex keys, wrenches, hacksaw, rip cut saw, tape measure, claw hammer, pry bar and toolkit bag (plus some other stuff I can’t make out).

Can’t seem to locate on their eBay page. Seems to be a a three day sale.

I had a look at this in store today. The quality of every tool is rubbish except for the wrecking bar. May be useful for someone who uses a tool box once a year at most.

Thanks so much for this comment. But would you recommend it for those seriously once per year tasks, definitely not regular use?
Or are the tools so weak they would likely break/warp at even the first use?

      • +3

Most sca stuff is entry level, but you can't beat this price. If they break first use, the store is usually great in taking returns. IE. This is probably perfect for what you need it for.

I got an SCA kit and honestly it's fine for what it is. Some of the tools haven't survived after a year or two but for the price it does the job.

      • +1

They will all work fine and get the job done. My point was, don’t expect them to last if you plan on using them frequently.

There is a saying which I think is super handy when it comes to Tools, especially for those who would use it once a year. Buy the first one cheap, and when it breaks buy the second one expensive. (i cant remember the exact saying)

Essentially if you are only going to use it a little bit first up there's no point forking out hundreds for something that you'll probably never use. But when you do find yourself using it quite a bit, enough that it breaks or doesn't cut it, you'll know that you can justify forking out for a good quality the second time around, as as you'll be using it so often.

    • Would you say it's the same level as the basic Craftright stuff?

      • nope don't think so

      • Looks almost identical to the Supatool stuff from bunnings. I have a Supatools kit I was give, and a bunch of Craftright stuff. Craftright is a step up in quality. But for $35, this is good.

    • +1

What do you expect for $35 lol

    • +1

Yeah, don't expect Sidchrome level quality, but I thought this would be great for someone only needing to do the occasional job (most people, honestly).

Also, being their house brand, if anything does go bad you should be able to get a replacement/refund easily down the line.

Still fantastic for Break and Enters, the crow bar and the bag makes it very handy.

      • Guess it's why the slogan is 'Supercheap Auto and much much more! 👍

Can someone recommend a good quality tool kit to have in the garage for the odd job? It's not something I would use often, but just to have some common tools would be handy.
Don't mind spending a bit more if it includes most of the common tools used and it's good quality that'll last for years. The only tool I have at the moment are Bondhus allen keys…

You’d probably be better off picking up good quality items when they go on sale, and gradually putting together something like this:

Probably should be looking at brands like Stahlwille, Snap-On, Craftsman etc if you want the best quality. That said, you'll pay more for one tool than this whole bag. I'd say it's largely pointless going this route unless it's your trade or will be using them every day. The difference in quality will mostly be apparent with prolonged use/wear.

      • Thanks - very sensible approach.

      • Agreed, none of these tools will break on the first use, despite doing a lot of wood work and carpentry I still use a lot of cheap tools where I use them every once in a while. Barely ever use my angle grinder, so I don't mind having a crap Ozito that cost $20.

It may be gash quality but it’s certainly top notch for the price. Certainly would fit someone who doesn’t use tools all that often. You’ll thank yourself when you need them.

Upvoted for use of the word gash.

Thanks! Bought one to leave at my mother's place for odd jobs. Should be perfect for it.

Right in time. Going to disassemble some furniture tomorrow. This will come in handy.

  • Cheers OP, Got one as a backup tool set. Can't complain at this price.

  • Might be good to have in the car, then again I have been buying decent quality Irwin stuff etc, so I might just bundle everything in a cheap bag.

The perfect price for this kit IMO. A good collection of cheap tools that will eventually wear & break and obviously no good for professional use however for $35.40 they're incredibly handy to have in the home or office for the handful of odd jobs throughout the year. I've bought a few of these (& similar) kits for the office over the years and the only reason I've needed to replace them is due to the tools being borrowed and never returned. I've also bought a few for home and find them handy but would never ever use them on 'mission critical' stuff like bike/car building & maintenance as you can do irreversible damage to expensive components ie. rounding heads, snapping parts etc. Good deal OP!

  • +4

Realistically, this is less a bargain and more just the correct price. A lot of these tools would be single-use. The screwdrivers are likely a soft steel that would get chewed out if you needed to use a bit of force. Same for any of the pliers or cutting tools.

  • Thanks. Got it for $30 as I had $5 loyalty credit in my account!

  • Bought one! Thanks OP!

  • Looks like a great deal to me.. complete novice in home fixeruppers, however when you go to checkout it actually says price was $59 NOT 94.49.. I wander which one is the truth!! (and would it have received so many likes if it wasnt 94.49…. :o)

    • You're right, it does say $59 at checkout: https://i.ibb.co/Xbxg9Lf/c.png

And also $59 according to Google: https://i.ibb.co/LkqVrGX/s.png

      • i thought so… i still bought one, everyone else was blissfully in denial, so i joined the band wagon.. trumpet and all! I was impressed - which clearly doesnt take much, lots of tools and they looked shiny :)

Snagged one of the last ones at my local, stacked with this deal to save a further $5

    @freakatronic

A lot of these tools would be single-use.

    And you know this, how?

Which ones would be single use?

One stroke of the saw? One grip of the multi-grip pliers? One turn of the pozidrive? One hit of the hammer? Oh yes, of course, one measurement of the tape measure. Yep, that's it. After 37.5 cm, it packs up and refuses to measure any more.

The screwdrivers are likely a soft steel that would get chewed out if you needed to use a bit of force. Same for any of the pliers or cutting tools.

You are just making stuff up, aren't you?

It is quite possible these may not be the most durable and precise tools available. And no-doubt for a professional tradesman like yourself, who demands nothing but the best German or Japanese precision engineered tools, this kit may not reach those lofty standards.

But for the target audience, for the actual real human beings who may occasionally need to repair a cupboard hinge, or screw the back off a remote control, or hammer over a protruding nail on their fence, or find a replacement Allen key for their Ikea bookcase, for a myriad of other minor tool-requiring jobs around the house, this kit looks pretty reasonable.

Further, as others have mentioned, the supplying company has a reasonable reputation for replacement of items under warranty, if as you suggest, the 'soft steel' screwdriver happens to get 'chewed out'.

    • +1

I have so many cheap screwdrivers, none of which have been damaged at all by any use. Unless you're doing proper stuff, the screws are going to give way first, which is another issue altogether. I rarely use my hand saw, but it's a cheap one like this that gets the job done on the odd occasion I have to use it, no complaints.

    • If a screw or bolt gets rounded by a cheap toolkit, it can then turn into a more expensive job requiring a professional.

      • +1

Doesn't it more likely mean you used a cheap screw or bolt instead? (or the wrong size)
        Genuine question.

Cos cheap tools are known for being butter soft as the main issue.

        • +1

If a tool starts to round it can cause the screw/bolt to fail due to uneven pressure.

    • Should've replied directly to the comment so that they would be notified.

  • not stocked anywhere in sydney… or i just missed out maybe

    • Sorry mate, might have just been cleared out. I had a quick look before I posted and they were pretty well stocked. But it's had coming up on 6.5k click-throughs now so stock may have been depleted.

You could maybe try a raincheck if you really want them? Worth a shot.

      • good call, thanks mate

  • Didn't need it. Bought it anyway lol..

  • Original price shown on website is $59 not $94.49

  • how come my $10 loyalty club isn't applying at checkout? :( is there a minimum spend or something?

    • you have to manually add the credit during checkout

    • Mine was being an (profanity) when I did it on the phone, I had to like scroll up a bit to get it to go on the final payment page, make sure you read everything on the page and don't miss it. Nearly charged me full price ( :O )

    Thanks OP
Forwarded it to boss at work & he’s grabbed 2 to throw in our vans for emergencies.
    Cheers

  • Tried to order and get stuck in loop. Available click and collect, but then says delivery not available. Rang support, they said it's a glitch.

I've paid more than this just for a bag similar to the one included. Tools will fit for purpose for the majority of users.

I'd buy this for the caravan I don't yet have.

  • None showing in Victoria

  • Bunnings has a much bigger and stronger although empty Dewalt tool bag for 19.95 sellout around 1/3 new price.

Can take a lot more but looks heaps more professional!

    • Link / Store location ? I'm keen, but I can only find full price online.

      • Cairns city store middle row on special trolley. Going back tomorrow to re check.

  • Bought. Good set for the average Joe.

  • Noticed this 105pc Supatool set at bunnings yesterday for $39.95. https://www.bunnings.com.au/supatool-105-piece-tool-bag-kit_…

Quite a different bunch of tools included, but I reckon the bunnings selection is more useful. Socket set in particular which I guess is worth the $39.95 alone .

Everything in the supatool set seems useful to me, but the SCA set has a few tools I think are kind of useless.

    • Saws. My boy got a cheap saw in a kids 'starter' tool kit and it was downright impossible to use. I suspect this is the same. <$10 buys something worth having. I hate those hacksaw blade handles too, and cheap hacksaw blades aren't worth having.

    • screwdrivers. Too many in the SCA set which are repeated in with the bit driver. I'd also prefer the solid bit driver over the ratchet type.

    • vise grips. one too I reckon it's worth getting decent quality.

I'd also trust the supatool to be better quality. I've had a supatool socket set for 10yrs and it's been very good.
