My Korean 1 & 2 (RRP for HardCopy is $98.85, eBook version FREE)

510

Awesome books, Personally enjoyed the first lot of lessons. Books and audio has direct downloads avaliable From Monash University. (Learn Korean Textbooks for English Speakers)

This textbook began its life as a personal collection of language activities which complemented the textbook Learning Korean: New Directions 1, (Pilot Edition 1) used in some Australian universities including Monash University where we started teaching Korean in 1992. In 1995, this meagre collection grew into a textbook of its own entitled Let’s Speak Korean. The following year the book went through a major change when Douglas Ling, a former student of ours and a lecturer in Film Studies at RMIT University (as a matter of fact, he is happily retired now), started helping us to rephrase the grammar explanations to be more suitable for Australian learners

    Anyone learnt Korean yet?

Whats the average time people learn Korean?

    • +1

That Depends on what your mother tongue is, if its a related language family. From my understanding Korean is an Altaic Language. amount of time you spend on study, practice, etc. Some can master it in a year including colloquial level some in 3 years. This course is for the first Year students learning korean. So only beginners level will be achieved once its completed.

    • I'd say 1-2 years and you'll be decent

Thats going to scare everyone away.
I think people think it takes a lot less time that whats said above.

        I will try still.

  • Korean is rated as one of the top four hardest languages for English speakers to learn. The other three being Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. So good luck.

    • Source? I find it hard to believe japanese is considered hard, pronunciation is a cinch once you know the fundamentals.

      • "For native English speakers
The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the US Department of State has compiled approximate learning expectations for a number of languages. Of the 63 languages analyzed, the five most difficult languages to reach proficiency in speaking and proficiency in reading (for native English speakers who already know other languages), requiring 88 weeks, are Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean. The Foreign Service Institute notes that Japanese is typically more difficult to learn than other languages in this group.[5]"

Perhaps you are referring specifically to proficiency in speaking only?

If you type in - Australian speaking Korean in youtube - you will find me. Korean is pretty hard to learn but after about 6 months it gets easier. Takes a lot of time though.

  • Thanks! I was thinking about learning Korean a while ago as I heard it was an easy language to learn. I did try to start learning it by myself, but I didn't find it was that easy, even considering that I know Japanese and Chinese…

  • Great thanks.

It is really interesting that people are interested in Korean stuff while 70 % of Australian I met asked me whether I am from North or South.

    • +1

well you could be from North Korea, its just a little more unlikely :P

Where are you from in Korea, perhaps I have been there?

      • +1

Greetings! I'm from Seoul to which most likely you have been. 10 million people living in Seoul and 10 other million people living in surroundings.
