Got this from computer alliance for $198
Should've post a deal on here. Would be good even just to get the hard drives
Didn't know it was an obligation
Dont be a dick mate.
@KenDiaMoi: Ok mate
Same here
Very deceptive for most people, 2x2TB in RAID 1 (mirrored) gives you under 2TB of usable space. Nothing even remotely like 4TB.
You have the choice to use the full capacity tho. But that's why I put 2x2tb in the title.
Some of the comments say it's not a NAS. Isn't it?
It is, but a really basic one.
It's really bad. I could map it as a network drive in Windows but it was not password protected (e.g. open to all my housemates).
Sent it back and bought the cheapest Synology NAS (ds119j?) with a WD Red drive for the same price-ish. It does all of the above (e.g. password-protected network drive) plus a lot more things that I do not understand.
Of course to get the dual-drive Synology and two red drives would cost a fair bit more but this WD drive is very handicapped.
Not on my setup. The only computer able to see it is the one that has WD discovery installed and logged with WD cloud username and password. I've got several computers VMs and server and it isn't visible.
Maybe it was before in some old firmware version.I'm not sure that the server was visible… But there was nothing stopping anyone else from mapping the drive.
I confirmed with WD website and support and other sources that it wasn't possible to password protect while mapped through windows.
Also had trouble getting windows file history to work with it but no problems with Synology.
@lukethefish: I’ve just mapped the drive using the IP/Hostname in another computer and the only visible folder is the Public.
I think the’ve addressed this issue.
Heard of issues with retriving data off hard drives if the case goes belly up.
With this unit, you cannot map drives in Windows natively. You must
install the WD app - it is the only way. That app is not compatible with 32bit Windows (not an issue for most). With the app, it works ok.Given the cost of the WD Red drives inside, it's still ok if you don't need much. It can often be had cheaper on eBay with coupons.
Can this run Plex? Want to stream UHD movies to my Samsung TV
Yes it has Plex built in. Not too sure about UDH movies
Plex app or Plex server?
Plex server, I can stream 1080p movies to my Apple TV without an issue.
