Bob Jane Refused Price Match

I tried to get Bob Jane to price match with Tempe tyres and Jax tyres but haven't been successful so far.

They said that tyres from Tempe are parallel imported, hence not legible for a price match. They refused to match price with Jax tyres stating that the final price including the 10% off would be below their cost price.

I called two stores in Sydney West area and got similar answers.

Did anyone successfully get a Bob Jane store to honour their price match policy before and what did you do?

Thanks.

Update: Thanks everyone for your comments. I actually decided to stop running around and went with Jax tyres before I created this post. There's no way I'm going back to a Bob Jane store even if their head office agrees to follow their price match policy. I created this post to see if my experience is common or rare.

The reason that I wanted to get a price match was because Bob Jane advertises matching a cheaper price and paying 10% of the difference. I was trying to get them to price match with Tempe tyres' online price (not a written quote). The total price difference for 4 tyres would be close to $100, which is a decent saving.

Thanks again for your comments!

Go to the cheapest place. Support the business that is lowering their price without you having to do a dance first.

Also, boycott the business that makes promises it does not intend to keep.

    • +1

Agreed! I wouldn't go to any Bob Jane stores again.

      • +4

Please apply that to all "price match" places that consistently do not have the lowest price and/or doesn't honour their policy.

I too stop going to Bob Jane. Rip off. Avoid Watergarden store. Even reviews from Google are very bad.

        • I have had bad experiences at bob jane also, had two new tyres put on the front of my vehicle. When I went to pick it up the center caps were missing and they claimed it came in like that….. I had only just washed the vehicle before dropping it off and know for a fact the caps were definitely there…. they replaced one but the other I had to buy myself. :(

Right on this. Price match policies are a load of filth and I'm happy to go out of my way to buy from the store that originally had it cheaper in the first place.

Same deal with EB games. They'll only price match 50% of the time and try to get out of it with desperate cop-outs. Once was enough for me to decide never to shop there again. Support the business that does the right thing, not the one that lies about doing it to steal your money.

Or you could just buy it at tempe/jax…

    • +4

The price difference after price match for 4 tyres (including extra 10% off as advertised on Bob Jane's website) is close to $100, hence I was hoping to get a good price.

      • +5

I'm genuinely confused by the negs.

Perhaps my post wasn't clear? Why shouldn't I try to get the best price for the same product?

        • +2

          I didn't neg you, but:

The best price is at Jax/Tempe, so why not go there? Even if Bob Jane price matched, you're not doing any better really, unless you account for fuel/time.

It's the nature of price-match policies. Only designed to win your business and earn money, not to benefit you as a customer. There are no principles to stand on, because it's not about your benefit.

Do bob jane have a T&C re price matching on their website?
What they have said to you is common with a lot of places that offer price matching.. below their purchase price (bs), grey import, etc.
Would not buy from B J anyway..

    • below their purchase price (bs)

Not always.. not everyone buys at the same price! Additionally, the 'buy' price can include freight costs, on consignment, be reduced to offset freebies etc, depending on how you want to market other products.

For example: Your supplier has a promotion to buy 10x (A) product, receive 1x (A) free. You can offset (A) price ~10% cheaper like your competition, but if you also bought 5x (B) product on the same invoice, you can also reduce (B) to sell it 'below cost price', beating your competition.

      • +2

Fully understand that but often their claimed purchase price is ficticious.
I have purchased many a white goods item for less than is shown on the store buy in price.. they can get bonuses from distributors for meeting set quotas.
I have seen hardware items that could not be sold at a certain price for the same reason but then offered at a lower price again for "trade" customers only.
Product sourcing and many other things can also allow you to obtain and sell your product at a better price although franchises are usually locked into once source, but not always.
The factors in retail pricing are many… and claims from retailers refusing to price match because it is below their buy price is more to do with set profit margins than reality. :-)

I also tried to get Bob Jane to price match tyre prices from another company once and they refused.

I just phoned Kmart Tyres and Auto and not only did they price match the other company they reduced their matched price to an extra $5 a corner off for the same tyres.

This. KTAS (Mycar, Continental) is my default now.

  • +13

Stop wasting your time and go to Tempe Tyres.

FWIW, last time I was over there the Bob Jane ute was there picking up a stack of tyres.

    • +11

lol if that doesn't say it all…

  • +1

Try Kmart tyres. They r great. I wouldn't bother wasting time at BJ

  • +1

    Go elsewhere.

  • Unless you have a stash of gift cards you're trying to use up, why would you want to have to argue to get a price match when you can just go to those offering the better deal already.

    • +3

Because they promise to match any competing price, plus pay 10% of the difference. The total price difference would be close to $100. That was why :)

Im in Victoria and Bob Jane over here as willing to match the online price of Tempe Tyres.

Their policy says "best price in Australia".

I completed the online web form at this link: https://www.bobjane.com.au/promo/best-tyre-price-guarantee

A few hours later, got an email to confirm the final price (which was $9 per tyre lower than Tempe's). No ifs and no buts..

I called, booked my car in the following week and got it all done.

Their policy says "best price in Australia".

Pity that they don't practice what they preach then eh?

      • +1

Well they did practice what they preach.

I completed the form a few days ago, haven't heard back from them so I decided to call the stores directly. I was hoping for a similar outcome like yours but that didn't happen.

      • +1

I completed the form a few days ago, haven't heard back from them

Maybe head office is the place to call. Explain that you've completed the form with the lower prcies and are waiting to hear back. You may or may not want you let it slip that you tried to go directly to the store while you're waiting, with no luck.

Bob Jane also have parallel imports and is the Harvey Norman of the tyre industry.

  • Why do you want to go to Robert Jane rather than just go to the places you're trying to price match?

    • +1

Because they promise to match any competing price, plus pay 10% of the difference. The total price difference would be close to $100 :)

Have you asked to speak to Bobby himself?

  • Thats too bad. I've always had really good experiences with Bob jane. I've had cause to go to the Moorabbin Vic place 3 times, and they've always been the best by far. They throw in a free alignment and rotation at the 3 month mark, which is a real bonus for me.

What kind of tyres are you buying?

    • +1

I think the experience is largely dependent on the franchisee. Some are great. Some are not.

I'm looking for Michelin pilot sport 4.

You found them, go buy them at Tempe tyres!

Have also gone to Moorabbin a number of times, and have been very good. Price beat (not match) twice against Jax and Kmart…..

Thanks. I had a look but they don't seem to stock the type that I'm after unfortunately :(

Mate, I got not just to price match but price beat the KMART Pirelli 205 R 16 60 tyres. I went to nunwading BJ store and they made sure that I dont leave the store without gettting new tyres. Cheers

  • +1

Bob Jane are overpriced ,but what they say about Tempe is right on some of their tires ,get the best price you can and ring Kmart ,ask them to beat it they have always done a better deal than Tempe ,i have used them many times and service is better than Tempe and branches everywhere.

Why on earth do people whine about companies not price matching? Just buy it from the lowest place.

    • +1

I think it's because people believe a price match policy, right up until that shop refuses to price match. Hello Flight Centre! At which point they get annoyed by that business, and are quite happy to disabuse others of the idea that the price match guarantee is worth the paper it's written on.

Also usually the store doing the price matching is more conveniently located than the other store.

      • -1

They will all have perfectly legal exceptions in their fine print to stop price match if that particular store did not want to price match. I would always reward the store with the best price rather than waste my time and complain about a technicality(valid or otherwise).

    • +1

because why promise something you won’t deliver?

    • +2

Because it's false advertising. They advertise a certain price, but won't provide it when you ask.

  • Best way to get the best price on tyres is to:

    1. Find out exactly what size your tyres are (just read the code on your current tyres).
    2. Call up several tyre places in your area and ask them for price and brand (best value unless you're only changing 2).
    3. Go to cheapest one.

I did this for my missus Ford Focus and got 4 Firestone tyres fitted and a wheel alignment for ~$320.

When I spoke to someone that used to work at a big branded Australian tyre factory, they told me they imported their tyres from overseas for like $20 each. Obviously when it trickles down to the retailer, the cost will be a lot higher but I try not to pay over $100 per tyre unless its for my monster truck.

    • +1

For reference, the one time I didn't do this I paid like $240 for 2 tyres for the same car.

That was with Bob Jane - never again will I make that mistake.

    • ask them for price and brand (best value unless you're only changing 2).

hi why do you mean best price unless changing 2 only?

  • Are the BJ stores operated by franchise? Is this why some manager refused to price match?

  • 4 months ago I bought 4 new tyres from Costco, saved at least $90 per tyre (including the $50 cash back on top of the advertised price). Then for wheel alignment I went to Bob Jane and the Manager casually asked where did I get new sets of tyres, I mentioned Costco, he said that next time if you require new tyres give us a call and we will match Costco quote. Costco imports directly as well but he was happy to match the price.

May be you can buy from Costco or check other Bob Jane.
