Huge Gas Bill in The Month ($300, in past Only $100)

I'm with Energy Australia. 4 bedroom & 1 game room house. Have solar water, ducted heating and usual cooking appliances.

Before June, did not use heating regularly so bill was $100 a month. Due to peak winter, had to switch on ducted heating all night and around 2 to 3 hours in day time. And the monthly bill increased to $300. I have closed unused bedroom vents all this time.

Is it normal bill or something need to be improved in my home ?

Your thoughts/suggestions would help me guys.

Note : 350 Mj daily use as per gas bill.

  • my recent gas bill was $360 (i have a 4bd/2bath house, gas heating/hot water/cooking) and according to my bill, i used 259MJ usage per day.. so sounds pretty normal

  • I was told this a while ago: https://www.saveonenergy.com/learning-center/post/should-you…

Not sure if 100% but I stopped bothering

  • had to switch on ducted heating all night

    350 Mj daily use

    Is it normal bill

    Yes.

  • I think $300 is not too much considering you used it all night. We got $590 for 2 months in 5 bedroom house with 5-6hrs usage per day.

switch on ducted heating all night

Why do you need the heating on all night?

I have my ducted heating set to turn on half an hour before the first person normally gets up, then turn off again after everyone has usually left for work. Then, it comes on again half an hour before the first person normally gets home, and turns off at 10:30pm at night. If I ever need it on outside those times, I manually override it. If I forget to turn off the override, the next scheduled off or on resets it back to normal.

  • It's the night time use that is kicking up the bill.

Turn the thermostat down to 14c-16c at night if you really want to heat but better to turn off. Possibly set the timer so that at 05.00 it kicks back up to 20c-22c (assuming that's what temp you have it set on) to take the chill out of the house.

Alternatively invest in warm pyjamas, sheets, blankets, etc and look at the efficiency of your insulation, window coverings and draught stoppers under the door.

  • They don’t read gas meter every month, energy Australia are probably just the retailer of the gas, my guess is the bill is an estimate, generated by a computer.

  • A 4 bedroom home, where not all the bedrooms are used, and running the gas heating all night.

It's winter, it's cold, you are using more energy to heat your home. It's not rocket surgery

      rocket surgery you say?

        Yes, rocket surgery.

    • Rocket surgery! Love it :D

~ $6.66 per day to be warm and cosy - not bad really

  • Sounds normal - look into insulating your house properly. Also, why would you run it all night? Just get some warmer quilt/blankets/doona/hot water bottles

  • Gas is crazily more expensive than electricity these days.

I am Vic and just got a $275 gas bill for one month. Shock of my life! But seems normal. 5 bedroom double storey large house with 6 star gas heater. Gas prices are a disgrace, particularly with the exporting of Australian gas overseas.

OP - I also noted that my previous bill was about $82 but realised that it was just an estimated read, hence why my first winter bill was high. You might want to check yours! This could explain the discrepancy.

For a house that size, I assume there are a few people? Maybe it would be better to compare on a per capita basis?

But yes, the domestic gas market is a disgrace in that our government has allowed corporates to export Australian gas for long-term, attractively priced contracts. At the same time, some of those same corporates are claiming there is a gas shortage in the domestic market and that domestic gas prices need to be increased.
And some of those same corporates want to import gas (which may even be Aust gas previously exported) and sell on the domestic market (obviously at an increased price).

None of those help the consumers (unless you have shares in AGL etc.)

Why do you need to run it all night when you are in bed?

    • Blanket was pulled down.

  • had to switch on ducted heating all night and around 2 to 3 hours in day time.

So you heated a house for 18 hours a day, and wonder why your usage has gone up?

  • +1 on don't leave the heater on all night. Just invest is a good doona and sleep in a long sleeve top, you should be warm enough. Little fan heaters work well for heating up bathrooms and then putting on a thick microfibre dressing gown, when you are dry, lets you do the rest of your ablutions whilst stil warm. We have hydronic heaters and set the thermostat to 18C. Still costs a bit of money though.

  • Lol turn heater off buy duna

Get solar and reverse cycle ac.

  • I average $300 per quarter and the only Gas used is from the stove. Even the hot water is electric. But I live in Adelaide where it's the most expensive in the world for gas and electricity…

  • Normal.

  • $300 seems pretty normal. Not looking forward to mine, it's going to be much worse. Have needed the gas heating on much more this winter as compared to previous years with it being colder longer. Gas is not cheap like it used to be back in the day.
